    Gaff schooners are just poetry in motion, and this one's a real beauty. You'd spend the rest of your life keeping up with the varnish work, but it'd be worth it. And what a history!! All of the art deco elements are perfect, too.

    Belle Époque was 1880's-1890's, when impressionists were painting, aka late Victorian. This yacht is from the Jazz age /Art Deco era between the World Wars. The Woody Allen film "Midnight in Paris" makes the distinction clear.

    I really appreciate how much research you do into the history of these remarkable historical yachts, David. Your attention to detail is just as thorough as the loving restoration the current owner has given Weatherbird. The "new" Art Deco" fixtures and fittings look as if they have always been there. I'm with you . . .no modern vessels compare to these magnificent wooden beauties.

    The Murphys pioneered summering on the south coast of France. On hot sunny days the locals would be looking to stay out of the sun. The Murphys would throw parties on the beach at their home near Antibes for their kids and their famous friends. This spawned a now famous local arts colony. Imagine being there before all the modern development.

    I generally don't like sail boats once they're over 10-15', but this is one of the few that I would actually be amiable to owning. It's a shame we didn't get to see the crew quarters and engine room, though. I did follow the link and seeing that this can have eight passengers and five crew keeps it quite intimate.

    I wonder if, when people who were this rich, privelidged and lived get old and are laying on their death beds are aware of how charmed and lucky they were. Or, are they resentful and upset to see it all coming to an end? I’ve known one gentleman who was this wealthy and lived a wonderful life though it wasn’t derived from privelidge, rather from hard work and living with chance much of his younger life. He died well, on his own terms and was happy with the life he had and his ability to leave something behind that helped his family.

      The Murphy's idyllic golden life of splendor was short lived.They lived into old age, but in the mid-1930's two of their three children died. They returned to the US, Gerald gave up painting and spent most of the rest of his life as a businessman running the family company (Mark Cross leather goods).

    It's beautiful! But could I sail it across the Atlantic?

    • @clifbradley
      @clifbradley Před 2 lety +2

      Yes. Most sailing boats over 35 feet can sail across the Atlantic. Not saying they should, but a lot do and this one is big enough. It's crazy to think that if you had a 50ft yacht and a 50ft sailing boat, nobody would take a 50 ft yacht across the Atlantic unless it was like a Nordhavn, Fleming or a Bering/Numarine which were made for that specifically. But it would be nothing for the sailing yacht to go across.

    • @thereligionofrationality8257
      @thereligionofrationality8257 Před 2 lety +1

      @@clifbradley I agree. Wooden sailing vessels have been crossing the oceans for centuries, if not millennia. But I was actually thinking about insurance legalities, and also wondering if this wonderful ship was purpose-built for the Mediterranean, which is much gentler, overall, than the Atlantic.

    • @clifbradley
      @clifbradley Před 2 lety

      @@thereligionofrationality8257 I honestly doubt this would go across the Atlantic. I don't think it would do that well. If I had to compare this to a modern motor yacht, I would say a 64ft Riva or a 72 ft Mangusta. Yes, this yacht is bigger than them, but this boat is built and priced based on it's looks and history and not really it's performance ability. I would give it a Category B rating and restrict it to 50 miles offshore. It could cruise the Caribbean, but would need a ride on a transporter to get there.

    • @clifbradley
      @clifbradley Před 2 lety
