What makes this so beautiful, is this is honestly what Askeladd was essentially telling Thorfinn in his final moments. To move on and not "stay in a boring place like this." And to "go beyond the world Thors went."
He was trying to tell Thorfinn to change his life and become a true warrior. Only now does Thorfinn understand him, and it's fucking powerful. To have two men who spent their lives as Vikings tell Thorfinn to abandon it and become a true warrior. Such different men, Askeladd and Thors, who came to the same conclusion.
Vinland Saga is one of the greatest stories of all time.

I don't think that he loved Thorfinn but he did hope he would escape the place of warriors, maybe because he reminds him of himself when he became a warrior. Clearly Askeladd, despite his actions, hated the warriors legacy and wanted to return back to his innocent days. You can spot thet he is a really mature child actually. His dream of finding the big hero who would save his country and the hatred for the Saxons and Vikings shows that he still has some of his childhood's characteristics. However we know he just couldn't resist the lust for power his father nad later he inherited. In the end Askeladd was another victim of his time and he became a monster, a criminal and a murderer, killing thousands and never being able to escape the real world. But he sees to Thorfinn the chance to escape the world of vikings and really wanted him to do so.

Call me delusional, but this story really shows us the altered reality in our minds that whatever crap you had to go through in life and you can't move on - this is what's happening in our imagination of where your mind is at. You can escape what imprisons you. Only if you allow to give yourself a chance to do so. Some people refuse to be free. Some people feed on the same guilt and don't want to see what other options are given to them and want to stay where they are at and just accept that is their life. Some people manage to break free from what's keeping them from fulfilling their purpose. Everyone has a purpose. Doesn't have to be grand or heroic. It's how you want to live your life and how much you want to give value to your life. Thorfinn wakes up and decides to live.

fighting for your nation is not evil nor senseless at all, there is such a thing as a just war or a productive and soul enriching patriotism. It is all about walking on that hard road, of knowing that you cannot just be on one single monomania of beliefs, that you cannot abscond the world or embrace it entirely. After all, God manifested Himself into flesh, as us, complete with our histories, traumas, joys, and temptations, he understood and was even respectful of it too, but he was ultimately above it all. You cannot escape your humanity, with all of its glories and all of its miseries, but you can direct it, both your moments of greatness and years of suffering, to the good in a manner that is charitable, faithful, and humble yet resolute, firm, and hopeful.

What I love about this manga is also why many people dislike it.
It's not the classic story of a badass hero that kills all his foes, marries the girl, and lives happy ever after.
It's reality. It's the fact that killing all these people in the end doesn't make you any better, it makes you a murderer who has these killings on his conscience. This is how it is in the real world, and if you behave like the classic shonen hero. This manga is giving a dose of reality to people. I think it especially resonates with young men. Many young men are immature in their early years. It's all about dominating others. Being the top person at sports, being the guy that beats up other guys and dominates them, and being the guys that has sex with as many girls as possible and have a high "body count". That's what it means to be a "Chad" and not be a "loser". It's a zero sum game. But then after 25-30, you realise this lifestyle left you with nothing, just guilt and regret. That's why many of these "chads" end up broken alcoholics later on in life. Their lifestyle becomes pathetic. I could also take the example of the young guys that enlist in the military to "be a chad" and "kill enemies of America". Well all these guys who've been to Iraq or Afghanistan and did that, are now alcoholics, broken, at home. Because they didn't build any useful skills for real society. Real society doesn't want a killer, they just find it despicable. And then you realise all the bullsh.t you thought was "cool" and "alpha" is in actuality meaningless. That's why many veterans kill themselves or find themselves in the bottle. Because they are empty, their value they thought was high is zero. It's where Thorfinn is at in the farm arc. His entire existence is realised to be nonsense and pathetic. But what Thorfinn does is acknowledge that, acknowledge his guilt, and then decide to spend the rest of his life DOING GOOD. That's the true path of a man. Either you kill yourself or end up in a psychiatric asylum or a broken hobo like so many in America, or you move forward and do something with your life that helps society.

Couldn't have said it any better myself. As a kid, after my parents divorced, my father was an alcoholic and spent periods of my life in and out of jail. And when I moved in with him before it got to its worst point, I developed all kinds of terrible thoughts, beliefs, and ignorance. I became an indignant person, who was filled with so much anger and selfishness. And though I was able to change, I have spent my mid to late twenties drinking a lot and hating myself for the person I was. But, three crucial stories have helped me start to slowly and progressively figure out what you have said; Berserk, Vinland Saga, and Vagabond. Vinland Saga being the most impactful, because I see myself in Thorfinn so much. Even down to Askeladd being a father figure that developed a lot of things that made Thorfinn the person he comes to regret. As much as it pains me that I lived a life like that, we only get one life, one period of living to change. And like you said, I need to do good to the world, rather than rot from the inside out. It gives me a small comfort to know that I'm not totally alone. For so long I felt that I didn't deserve to be better and live a better life, but Thorfinn has been able to, and I pray that maybe I can.

This is one of the most intense part of the story so far, and a life-changing moment for Thorfinn. So beuatiful.
To me, it is also confirming that, deep down, Thorfinn did not really hate Askeladd, but saw him as a mentor, if not as a father figure. This explains why he was not able to kill him: He was not committed enough to keep his head cool and do it. Instead, he relied only in his rage to find a reason to fight the man. Not strangely, Thorfinn was broken when Askeladd made him realizing that.
And, now, Askeladd appears again in his mind, as a projection of the man he was, a bad man who did not allow himself to show love to anyone, not even to his only friend Bjorn. But, in Thorfinn's mind he became a guide, like Virgil driving Dante in the Hell in the Divine Comedy. A guide who said Thorfinn what he needed to hear to start to live again. This was based on what Askeladd tried to tell Thorfinn when he was in life, but it is unlikely that the real Askeladd would have sacrificed himself for him like the one in Thorfinn's dream did.
In sum, this dream tells more on what Thorfinn thought about Askeladd than what Askeladd thought about Thorfinn.

The chapter is out and I honestly prefer the manga.
Maybe it's due to my high expectations, because for me this is one of the best moments I've ever seen in a manga or in a story in general and in my opinion it should be a perfect, exact and direct adaptation.
The anime did a good job, but it lacked detail in the drawing and animation, besides the soundtrack and this video is a proof of that.
The songs you chose in this video together with the excellent drawing of the manga are enough to make me feel a lot of emotions and make me cry, while the anime fails in that aspect, I don't feel that weight or emotion in the scenes.
The manga had more impact on me.

i think it has a lot of detail, they even added some scenes to make it more impactful. mainly this show or this season in general is filled with detail>animation, especially this episode. also the episode had some pretty good cuts, like thorfinn finger nails getting scrapped. but ig it all comes down to preference. also the manga has always been a bit better than the anime overall so I’ll give u that but the adaptation of this chapter was on point imo.

So arguably. I always believed this is the Christian Hell and in religion, because of the fact that Thorfinn post marriage his entire family was basically Christian. Ofcourse this is fiction and this is up to interpretation, but that's my personal beliefs, it also matches well with most Christian religious themes and principals with the concept of death and murder, as well as vengeance.

Other anime have depicted the mind this way. When Askeladd mentions the 'real world' he obviously exists within Thorfinn's mind and the law of the mind is very real
Everyone you see exists within the subconscious mind. They are you, but entrants into the domain of the 'real'. A son, a father, a brother, on and on
This is what makes the human being such a dangerous facet of reality. We consider ourselves separate, but in reality, we are the same being manifested at different points in time. Different vessels occupying aspects of the mind. Some aggression, some despair, some gladness, some boldness, haves and have nots. All within the mind, creating illusory factions of status and appeal for the sake of longevity
When you strike out, it is against your brother clad in the skin his mother born him. You would be killing the image of life

    1) Hel (Norse) where the unwanted, sick, broken, tainted, dishonored, etc go
    2) some abyss where dishonored warriors get sent to
    Or
    Christian Hell
I don’t believe this place is Valhalla so that rules it out. Thanks in advance guys I’m just dumb asf and my monke brain can’t figure it out

    • @chill1694
      @chill1694  Před rokem +2

I think it’s technically none of those, as it’s all just a dream in Thorfinn’s head, but like Askeladd said “it’s the real world”.
I think it’s just supposed to show how the real world actually is for these warriors. They could be doing so much productive things and living a happy life, but they are just trapped in a constant battle.
The setting of this battle in his head has meaning too. They’re in the real world, but they are in a deep hole with almost no escape. The constant fighting also gives them no chance to escape since they are in survival mode, and can’t think about what life is like outside of that hole.
Like Askeladd said, becoming empty is what let Thorfinn escape from that place. Thorfinn instantly had his entire life’s purpose shattered at the end of the prologue. After a while of being away from the fighting, he was able to see how it truly was from an outside point of view.
The view of how these warriors are truly living; they are living a terrible life with constant death and suffering.
That’s why I think this place isn’t one of those, but it’s just what war and fighting looks like in the real world to those who have escaped it. Though you might be thinking something similar with your 2nd option.
I don’t know if I’m exactly right, but that’s just what I think.
