What's your body shape? Why is body Shape SO important? Part 1: Body Shape Master Classe Series.

- Body Shape is incredibly important in the styling process and in my role as a Personal Stylist for the everyday woman, it's the first thing I assess when I meet a client, so I thought i'd share with you as much knowledge as I can in a series of Body Shape Master Classes.
Part 1 is overview of the shapes, body scale and the reason why it's so important in the styling process.
Part 2 onwards will see me dress a different shaped woman each week (not a model, she'll have real lumps and bumps!). You'll get to see how I style every shape possible (apple, pear, strawberry, rectangle and hourglass). And as you'll quickly learn, most women are combinations of shapes and need to consider rules from multiple shapes.
I really hope you enjoy. As always please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any specific questions.
For reference, I'm 5ft 3 and a UK size 8-10.
In the video i'm wearing:
Zara Basics Knit, Cream, Size medium (they come up small) go.zara/3khWJwa
Mint Velvet Leather Tan skirt, size 8 (old) but VERY similar: bit.ly/3CWNQPT
Missoma Lucy William Coin Necklace, £145 bit.ly/3EZNM26 - Jak na to + styl
Hmmm. I am an hourglass and I have found that most clothes are designed for people who are bigger on the bottom than the top or the waist is too loose. I always have to buy dresses to fit my bust so that it fits my hips and then take in the waist.
In fact, the clothes are well designed for horglasses shapes but hourglasses "without chest" because even if fashion bothers us with the 90-60-90 thing, if you look, a 90 of chest corresponds to a size S while the hips will be a XS and the waist a XS or XXS ! And yes, you've probably guessed it, like you, I buy dresses that fit my chest size and have to take back the waist and hips that are too loose...
Having taken my measurements I’ve decided I’m some kind of fruit salad! 😂 Such a useful game-changing video, thank you! 😊
Glad you found it useful x
This made me laugh so much 🤣 xx
Most descriptions of body shapes usually talk about "nice legs". I'l like to see something for those of us with knees and legs that are not slim. Love the videos.
If you watch my body shape master class series where I dress real women live on youtube you'll see plenty of examples of everyday women with all different types of body shapes. I hope that helps x
It is amazing how age changes our bodies! I used to be a pear and now I'm an apple! I don't miss the saddle bag thighs, but I sure miss the waist!
You are my favorite stylist and I’ve watched 100’s.
Thank you! That’s incredibly nice of you to say so. You’ve made my morning 😘
I love the recommendation for an hourglass to not go out of the balance. It finally clicked for me. Now I know why pleated skirts never worked for me. I'd be grateful for more hourglass videos. This channel is the best styling channel on youtube, thanks for giving us so much great content for free.
Oh wow, thank you so much xx 😘
Great, looking forward to this series. Best explanations I’ve seen about body shapes with lots of visuals too. Reassuring to have it confirmed that we can be a combination of shapes. I certainly am.
Thank you Nicola, that’s good to hear. If the clothes arrive on top (everything is currently delayed) then I’ll be filming an Apple/strawberry combination on Friday so again very reassuring that most people are bits from each!
Fabulous and informative video, especially a hybrid body shape and scale……. Don’t know about other viewers but I’m hooked and cant wait for more videos! Thanks Melissa x
That was quick watching, I've only just loaded it! Really glad you enjoyed it! I'm filming a strawberry/slight apple shaped lady on Friday so hopefully i'll get to edit it over the weekend so I can get it up nice and quickly for you. Thanks for watching.
Me too
Totally agree. The hard work is actually wearing or showing ON someone, the styles instead of just a picture. It's so helpful, have learned so much!
Thank you so much, Melissa! For the very first time I truly understand body shapes and how to style them. I have started watching your videos a couple of days ago, and I am hooked! :D Thank you for sharing your wisdom with all of us women who want to look their best on our daily lives :)
Thank you for watching them - you must be sick of my voice by now!!! Thank you for the support x
I love that you talk about how to dress real women and not just advice that's "one size fits all!" Can't wait to see more!
Thank you Liz. There’s plenty more videos on there so hope you enjoy x
Thanks!
This is fantastic. I’m in my late 70s and a totally different shape to my younger days. Weight has gone on everywhere sadly so I find clothing so difficult in my mind eye I still want the clothing style I had always chosen no I don’t buy them. But hate what I do. So I’m looking forward even at my age of learning some tips.
Such a well thought out comprehensive explanation of body shapes. I found your channel earlier today and was a bit unsure about my shape. Now I know I'm an apple - I carry weight all around my middle, have good legs and a flat bottom. You even mentioned carrying weight around the back bra line which no one has ever mentioned before. I can't wait to catch up with all the videos I've missed, I just know I'm going to learn so much. Thank you.
Well welcome on board Gail, I hope you find the others useful too. Click on my logo then the videos tab and you'll see the whole list. x
@@mmpersonalstyling Thank you x
Love love this!
Love this series!
I am so glad I stumbled upon your videos. I love your style! I am in the US and your accent makes me smile! :-) Please keep the videos coming, they’re very informative and fun to watch.
This video was so helpful!
Very helpful video. Thank you
Great video, can’t wait for the next one 🥰
So informative. Thank you Melissa. Cannot wait for more
Thank you for this video! 😀💐
Great video. Very informative.
Looking forward to watching these x
Great video! Thank You 🙏🏻
So informative and a joy to watch and learn new terminology from across the pond. As soon as I feel confident in defining my shape & styling for my Shape, the contents of my closet is going to shrink dramatically!!!
I’ve already started editing my shoe closet!
I’m so grateful.
I’ve truly never encountered anyone, in all my 55 years, so talented at styling.
We need more Melissa’s in the world!
Oh my goodness, thank you so much Rhonda, really appreciate your comments xx 😘
So informative really enjoyed this 😀 xx
Looking forward to the series, learning on every video ❤️
Thank you for such an informative video! Can’t wait for the next episode in this series
Such a helpful video and so well explained thank you!!!
at last someone explains it correctly, thank you!
Hi Melissa. I'm a (natural) still red headed 70 year old who loves fashion and lives in skinny jeans - size 8-10 and 5'3''. I think I'm a triangle (88cm bust / 78cm waist / 95cm hips) but since my waist has been given a long lasting hug by too many Mars bars, I've lost my way a bit. Your video is giving me hope (and I'd be a very willing model!)....
Thank you Lynn! I’ve actually got a petite (height wise) lady (but she is a uk size 16) that I’m filming tomorrow but I’m making a note of everyone’s lovely offers and as I move through the shapes I might just take you up on your offer if you’re local!!! The Christmas party edit will be up by the end of the weekend and given that you’re similar height and size to myself you might find that useful. X
This is very interesting, I shall be following this series!
Wow! Great info. Helps alot. Thank you for sharing.
I love this already! Really looking forward to learning all about it! Thank you!
Thank you Melissa for this amazing and informative Video , looking forward to the rest of this series 🥰🥰🥰
Excellent!
Great video, thanks Melissa! Can’t wait to see your styling ladies! 👍☺️💕
Love this series thank you for it!!
You’re welcome, thank you for watching x
So helpful!
This video was soooo helpful! Thank you
I'm so glad!
Very helpful and looking forward to the future videos...Grace
Thank you so much for this video. I finally understand how to measure yourself to see what shape you are. I look forward to seeing the other videos in this set.
Loved this! Very helpful info! 👌
Glad you liked it!!
Fantastic content! Love your approach and style, glad I fell across you. Hooked!
I’m hoping you will do a video on my shape. I’m hour glass, size 12-14 but a G cup and only 5’3”. I find it so hard to find clothes that fit and look good 😔
You could watch a combination of the videos as it's incredibly hard to get a model to volunteer who has your exact body shape. Watch episode 3 and episode 7 of the body shape master class. Plus, i'm only 5ft 3 so take advice from what you see me in too. Just remember styling is about balance so regardless of your shape thats all you're trying to do. Click on my logo then the 'video' tab and you'll see all of the videos in the same place....
You're the best. Love how you explain everything in a way we can understand. Such great content!!
Thank you so much x
Thank you! I've watched a number of videos on body type. This is the best explanation I've seen. I look forward to watching the series.
Thank you Beverly, that’s great to hear. We filmed episode 2 today so with any luck it should be up by Sunday or Monday night. X
Sooooo well done! You are a fabulous instructor. Thanks for all the great information.
You’re very welcome, thank you for watching x
Excellent info. Ty!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for the clear information. Have been following you lately and have had to do lots of shopping. Fantastic thank you
You're very welcome, thank you for watching x
Best body shape video I have seen till date. Thank you for distinguishing between a "mommy pooch" and a broad waist and for showing the importance of scale. Overall, thank you for being kind in your description of all body shapes. Thank you!
P.S. I never knew it was the shoulder I was supposed to be measuring. Many CZcamsrs said it was the bust, and because of that suggestion I could never really pinpoint my body shape. My measurement kept suggesting shapes that didn't match my actual appearance. Thanks to your video, I am pretty sure I am a slight pear with a bit of tummy.
Thank you Beverly, I'm really glad to hear that its helped you. Thank you for watching x
I figure I'm a rectangle. I pack on weight evenly, but I have to say, even though I am slim my legs are still a bit chunkier than what size I wear and sometimes I either find they fit just right, tight, or depending on maker, swimming in them. In the whole "Kibbe realm" I'm considered a Flamboyant Natural because I'm 5'8" and 120. Not dramatic looking enough because I have softness. Cool. Glad I discovered you here! I struggle with finding the right jeans in general. I get the dreaded droopy crotch and everything else is fine (Joe's are great, and Hudson). Cheers.
Really well explained! I always thought I was an apple but I'm an hourglass with a bit of a tummy!
Bonus! Just make sure you don't upset the natural balance that you're lucky enough to have. Skim over the tummy but don't try and hide it - you'll make it look bigger. x
Ahh this is me! I'm a UK size 8-10 and the veering toward the 10 is always about my tummy being a bit of a "pot" after 3 kids 😆
Hello Melissa! I just came across this video! Having a watched a few on the same topic I must say that you covered it so well with wonderful visuals too! I'm now going to find and watch the subsequent body shape videos! Thank you for sharing your expertise and experience!!
Hello Celia, welcome! I’ve just filmed episode 4 and filming episode 5 on Wednesday so plenty more to come. Hopefully your body shape is covered in one of these. Coming up is a 6Ft tall lady and another one who lacks any waist definition. Thank you for watching x
You are absolutely lovely and such a great instructor. I’ve heard this information before but you make it so clear. So glad I found your channel! I now feel confident to say I’m an hourglass/pear and have an average frame. Can’t wait to watch the rest of your series!
You are so welcome, glad you found it useful. I uploaded a new one yesterday xx
Just discovered and subscribed to your channel. very informative!
Thanks and welcome x
Awesome video and very informative! Can you share options for short waisted women with longer legs? Thank you for sharing! ❤️
Thanks for identifying body shape by where we tend to put on weight - really practical to choose the best way to dress for our tendency to fluctuate in our weight
Hi Melissa
Such great news to hear that your videos are going to be more frequent. I absolutely love the shapes, colours and materials you always select in your hauls but these shape tutorials are very useful and clear.
I am hooked.
Xx
Thank you Sarah. Don’t worry, the hauls won’t stop (in fact I’m waiting on a big delivery of items to arrive so I can film a new haul on Saturday - fingers crossed they arrive!). The body shape series is simply additional material. I hope you enjoy them. 😊
Brilliant video! I am a tall hourglass and I find it virtually impossible to find clothes that don’t make me look either enormous or way too ‘sexy’ when I just want to look casual and put together. Really looking forward to this series!!!
Episode 4 is a tall lady so keep your eyes out for that one! The Christmas party haul is now out too and most of the brands i've used have a tall range. Merry Christmas to you x
I really LOVED this video! My sister and I are always trying to understand our shapes as they are sooo different and we love learning and sharing and shopping together! This is my favorite video about shapes and understanding them and I thank you for posting it, I am enjoying learning about it for myself and my sister and also my friends when they ask for advice on clothes! All this knowledge is so incredible to help us understand our bodies and help us embrace where we are at different points in our lives😍 thank you SO SO much!
You're very welcome, thanks for watching x
The best bodyshape video I have seen. I will certainly take a closer look at this series. You got yourself a new subscriber 😉
Awesome! Thank you so much and welcome! x
Great video - looking forward to watching this new series on body shapes.
Thank you! Episode 3 will be here in a couple of weeks but before then i'll be doing a haul video and a Christmas outfit special so hopefully you'll enjoy those too. Thanks for watching.
Hi Melissa, thanks for this great content! I just stumbled upon your videos today and subscribed. I’m really looking forward to more advice on how to style my petite pear shape.
Hi Brenda. It might be worth you watching episode 3 as that model is petite and a mixture of lots of shapes, plus there’s lots of general styling tips in all of them anyway. Thanks for watching x
Huge love from South Korea! your haul video led me to this professional channel! can't wait to watch other videos !! ❤️
Oh wow, all the way from South Korea, that’s amazing! Welcome - I hope you enjoy the content x
Very helpful
This is incredibly informative. You are a born teacher! Thanks for making this valuable information so clear. Subscribed!!
Wow - thank you for the lovely feedback x
Lady in yellow 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
That was really helpful and informative. I've watched a lot of body shape videos and this is the first one that mentioned scale. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
Thank you! Episodes 2 and 3 are already live! Thanks for watching x
I have a question! First of all, thank you for such a comprehensive video on body shapes. It really gave me powerful insight on how to possibly dress good no matter the shape.
My body size is as follows (shoulders to hips): 41.5, 38, 39.5, 42.5. I’m guessing I fall under a rectangle or pear shape? Pretty confusing because the numbers are so close to each other! Help much appreciated 💕
Numbers alone would suggest rectangle but ask yourself where you put on weight and if it’s your thighs (for example) then you might be a combination of pear and rectangle (most people are combinations of different shapes). Hope that helps
I've been watching videos for months now and I'm still know wiser but your amazing ! the best I've watched so far ❤ the way you explain things are amazing & l love the way you swap a top and shoes and it totally transforms you . I would love to know where you work so you could help me as l don't know what shape l am & I'm skinny at thd top with thick legs 😪 thank you, l can't wait to watch more xxx
Thank you Michelle. If you go to my website which is www.mmpersonalstyling.co.uk you can find out everything you need to know but in short, I live in Wiltshire in England (by Marlborough if you're from the UK) and I have private clients who I help with wardrobe re-styles, shopping trips etc., as well as running a teaching school where I teach others how to become personal stylists.I also do online style consultations for anyone not in my area including clients in America, Canada, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Australia. I hope that helps and thank you for your kind words. x
A very clear video Melissa and having thought I was apple shaped I wonder now if I’m a combination. You explain it all very well and in detail. Good visuals too and looking forward to watching more of your videos. Thank you.
Thank you Ruth x
This has been fantastic and extremely informative. I am a pear just like you. Thank you
You’re very welcome x
Fantastic!
Many thanks!
Love your videos
Thank you so much - there's more to come over the next few days!
I’m looking forward to the rectangle body shape styling video! Thank you 😊
It’s already on there - I think it was episode 4 maybe?
@@mmpersonalstyling I’m trying to find it. Do you know what it’s called or have a link? Thank you
Wonderful video. I'm a newbie at creating a personal style. This was so helpful. Going to continue watching the series. Many thanks!!
You’re very welcome xx
wow!!! now this is one of the most meaningful content I have come across. Thank you so much for sharing this knowledge with us :)
You’re more than welcome, thank you for watching
Melissa, I'm sure you and your team have noticed I'm binge watching your channel (due to all my comments in just a few days' time). I am 44 and have always assumed I'm a pear because of the generic descriptions I've read. However, you inspired me to consider my shoulders, which are quite prominent, and I'm closer to hourglass. Now I'm considering all my life choices. Haha!!! Thanks for all the work you guys do to help us.
Oh thank you!🤩
Such high quality content! I am sure it was a lot of work to finde the matching pictures, but they were so helpful in understanding your great explanations. Thank you so much for your efforts! Had to subscribe
Thank you so much 😊
👏🏻That was the best explanation of body types I've heard. I very much look forward to this series.
Thank you. Episodes 2 and 3 are already live (if that helps!).
So happy I have found you! Boy, am I ever making mistakes, but I know with watching you I will be able to figure things out. Thank-you!!!!
I’m sure you’ll do a fantastic job Janet - it’s one of those subjects that If nobody teaches you how are you meant to know! I learned more from my mum so it was drilled into me as a child!!! X
Super helpful, can’t wait to see your models. I’m a mix of rectangle/apple and tall. I’ve tried the broadening technique but feel massive like a tank. Ditto when I do the same to my bottom. Most videos when dealing with this shape, prescribe the worst fashion cloths in my opinion, horrible waterfall cardigans, trapeze tops, flowing sleeves - all look terrible and out of fashion with today’s trends. So hoping for different ways to style what I feel is the most challenging shape of them all!
Hello! Thank you for your comments, you’re exactly the type of person I’d like to help. ‘Broadening’ is done incredibly subtly and as part of the balancing process and when done correctly I 100% guarantee that you will look and feel smaller all over. The first model is a combination of Apple and strawberry with tiny thin legs so you’ll see the broadening and balancing out techniques used consistently throughout the styling so fingers crossed they give you some inspiration!
Brilliant video I stumbled across today! So disappointed to find the video for my body shape isn't up yet! 😭 Will be waiting with bated breath. Love how you've normalised every body shape, all with pros and cons. 👍
What’s your shape Elizabeth? I can let you know when we’re planning on filming it for you x
Can’t wait for the models to show this in reality! Great video 😁
That’s the fun part and the reason I love my job - wait and see the difference we can make on a lady who carries her weight around the midsection as well as her boobs and back! She’s also got very slim legs which ironically make her top half look much bigger! I’m filming that on Friday so I’ll try and edit really quickly so you guys can see the theory come alive!
Your explanations were superb! I finally understand what my body shape is. I am definitely a hybrid in my opinion. I did take my measurements just to see what they were quickly.
Glad it was helpful!
hi, can you also look at the torso to leg length ratio, I have incredibly shoty torso and long legs which creates hip dips!
Melissa, your videos are so helpful. I have been an inverse triangle with a larger abdominal area. Over the years, I focused on skinny paints to highlight my toned legs not realizing it would make me look chubbier in my mid section. Will change my wardrobe.
Thank you. There’s several video that might help you too. Here’s some links czcams.com/video/Uak_fyXUpd8/video.html or czcams.com/video/yBx40E7URcY/video.html
As a strawberry shape, this makes since as to why I have preferred slimmer tops and flared skirts on bottom.
I'm so grateful to you for starting this channel and sharing your expertise! I've looked at this Playlist, and I don't know what you're already planning... but may I request a short torso (with little waist definition) and long legs? I really struggle finding clothes. Thank you for all you're doing!
I have the same issue! All dresses and structural tops end up with excess fabric between the bust and shoulder-several inches in many cases. I am 5'4" with a short torso, long legs, large feet (us size 9.5) and a 34 DD chest, so I'm all kinds of out-of-proportion.
Love these comments! Yes, me too!! I would love a video on a short torso and longer legs. I am 5' 2" with a short torso, larger chest, and long legs. Nothing ever fits me LOL. Usually the fabric of dresses or shirts are too long for the space between my chest and shoulder. I mostly carry my weight in my mid-section and chest. I'm size 4 (US) right now. Apparently I am an hourglass but I wouldn't have known because of my short torso and apple weight-carrying tendencies.
Best video I've watched on body shape and I've watched a lot of them. I'm a hard to fit pear -with a 10 inch difference between waist and butt. 3 inches smaller in the shoulders than the hips. Pants that don't need to be tailored are almost impossible to find....all my life. The low rise stretchy pants (style 15 years ago?) worked for me fit wise but made my legs look shorter-5'5. I'm really looking forward to that real woman pear styling video!
I’m desperately trying to find a proper pear model to volunteer. I don’t suppose you’re in the uk and want to volunteer do you? You’d get the whole styling session for free from me? Email at melissa@mmpersonalstyling.Co.uk if you do xx
Another way to see a person's body shape is to take af photo or look in a mirror and draw an outline from the shoulders and over to the hip. It's like a shadow of the body lite from behind with a very strong light in a dark room.
Love that idea, thank you for sharing.
I’m an hourglass. I’m also 5’11. My optimal sizing is a US 6-8. Anything above that begins to be a bit much for me and I get self-conscious and want to scale it back. That leads me to wear clothing that is not flattering to my shape. Looking forward to the series!
Also 5'11''....used to be a 5-7 in jeans (US). Now I'm an 8-10. I have broad shoulders, so it's all about where the shoulder seam falls. The wrong shoulder can make me look huge, . and so can a boxy shirt. I'm btwn 145-150 lbs. Def' agree the wrong style ca drown me. I prefer smooth fitting tops, but not too tight...just skimming the body. My go to pieces are jackets/blazers, boot cut jeans, flowy wide leg pants and V-neck T's with a bit of lycra...and mini skirts (about 4-5'' above the knee. I avoid shorter pants...esp flairs, They make my legs look too tiny. Longer lengths make me look much leggier.
Thank you for clarifying how to measure the shoulders! Before this video, I wasn't sure if the shoulders was the whole top part, or from one end of the clavicle to the next. Looks like I am between three different shapes? My shoulder is 34 inches, bust 38, waist 29 (it can be 31 if I'm bloated), and hips 38. I guess I am an hourglass? My shoulders are smaller than my hips though.
And when my waist is 31 inches from bloating after a big meal, then I am a rectangle? I gain weight in my waist, tummy, and thighs/butt. I don't gain much weight above my waistline. I'm very short-waisted, which is hard to dress. I'm 5'4". I guess I will watch the videos for the hourglass, pear, and rectangle!
You can be a mixture of all different shapes. If it helps we have a Personal Styling For yourself Course which takes you on a complete styling journey starting off with how to work out your shape and you get free access to myself and the other stylists throughout the whole course x
I seem to be an hourglass but with a tummy and everything I wear unless it’s baggy emphasises my tummy and hips I’m also quiet slim in all other areas so I always feel frumpy.
Try this video, it will show you how to dress a tummy on a lady who has a larger apron stomach czcams.com/video/yBx40E7URcY/video.html
@@mmpersonalstyling If you go strictly by a tape measure, I am technically an hourglass also - except I have small bust but rather protruding belly - not like an apron, but up higher as if i were pregnant... My belly definitely sticks out past my breasts, but it's the area right at my waist/belly-button... I have actually considered buying maternity pants just to accommodate... Would the pointers in the apron tummy video also apply to my shape, or are there other techniques to use to help my shape in a profile-view???
Wow the very first person to say I am not necessarily one shape !!!!!! My measurements are 36J bust. 27 inch waist. 43 inch hips so no not any shape ty so much for this video
You're very welcome. There's lots of body Shape Master Classes using 'real' women on here so if you watch each of them hopefully you'll pick up all the relevant styling tricks for your shape. Click on my logo then the video tab and you'll see them all there. Thanks for watching x
I love this series! Measured myself (41 shoulders, 39 bust, 30 waist 39 hips) so think I'm an hourglass? But I'm short (5' 2") and feel like I look pudgy and dumpy. Although I am petite, petite sizes rarely fit correctly. I'm not sure why-- maybe I'm disproportionately long in the torso. Will you be doing a styling video for short hourglass type? Now a subscriber!
Wow - it sounds like to me that you've got an amazing figure! I've just filmed an hourglass lady but i'm afraid she was 6ft all! The principals around dressing an hourglass are the same though. That one should be up in the middle of next week and i've just loaded episode 4 if that's of any interest. x
Please do one for Pear Shapes. Allready subscribed.
A pear shaped model is coming - I promise! Thanks for subscribing. I've just launched a new high street haul video if thats of interest to you.
Hi Melissa, I have just discovered your channel, and this series is fantastic - very informative. Would you please consider making a video for tall ladies with rectangle body shape? In my case, I have no curves, flat bottom, very slim (except for the tummy area), and find it hard to make the illusion of curves for my long frame. Looking forward for more videos. Your new subscriber - Mau
Hi there. Tomorrow I’m filming with a lady who has a flat bottom, skinny legs and broader on top and I think she’s 5ft8 but then on Wednesday I’m filming with a 6Ft lady who is very slender so hopefully once I edit and put those two videos up there will be advice across both of them to suit yourself! So watch out for those - hope they’ll be useful to you x
Very balanced informative information. I am middle aged and have lost a good amount of weight and now I am a rectangle/small apple😉
WHO KNEW.. until now? your video was most helpful . I am a new subscriber …. Will be watching all your videos!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching. Merry Christmas x
