  • How to install a door jamb extension. In this video I have a standard 4 1/2" door that's going into a 2x6 wall. I'll explain how to install a jamb extension so the door will fit properly.

    Awesome man! Exactly what I need for an exterior door project! Somebody bought an exterior door that wasn’t wide enough.

    I am planning to add a door in my home and haven't done a project like this in a while. I needed a refresher, so finding your video was greatly appreciated. The detail my brain needed was there and you made the steps clear without the extra chit-chat.

    Great explanation. I am putting in a new door for a friend on an 80 year old building that the walls are 8" thick. So I ordered a 6" jamb and extensions, but had no idea on how it went together. Again great job.

    Precase the hinge side. Set your door verifying plumb on hinges and proper reveal around door/jamb nail it off. Then set jamb extensions on outside and mark and cut the mould the outside.

    The house I was doing had 2x6 framing & 6” 9/16 jams. I took the same jam as you used header and strike side. Took butt side cut it to give me 2” extensions and used dominos to mate the 2” extension !
    Wala!! Done!
    I am a finish carpenter contractor so I am caution bout those trim screws they snap like twigs under pressure ! However I am sure your good!
    Pl 400 expands so I stay away from that!

    If I have an exterior door already installed that needs an extension like this, it can be added while already installed? I need the extension so u can get a new storm door that won’t have a gap. I don’t want to replace the main door.

    Question for ya. Can you cut down the extension if you don’t need the width they are selling? I need 5 1/2” added. Thank you for a great video!!

    • @HomeSource
      @HomeSource  Před 2 lety

      I think so. I’ve cut down custom widths for interior doors many times. Just need to make sure it’s somewhat close or your threshold may look a little funny. Good luck!

    Do you think that groove where the extension was added is so you can fill with putty or Bondo and sand flush to blend the two surfaces together before painting?

    • @HomeSource
      @HomeSource  Před 2 lety +1

      No. They do that’s it here’s a clear definition between the two. Trying to fill and blend is a lot or work and in the end probably won’t look as good as a line your eye naturally goes to.

    With the door sill extension, any concern of water getting between the extension and original sill into the house?

    • @JayZoop
      @JayZoop Před rokem +1

      I'm sure the glue and the paint will seal it up well. Paint should always be touched up every few years to protect the wood.

    • @HomeSource
      @HomeSource  Před 5 měsíci +1

      You can definitely order in different widths, for sure 2x6 and 2x4, but not sure about other sizes.

      U can. Nail extensions to framing using shims where nails or screws are used. Caulk edges and trim.

    • @HomeSource
      @HomeSource  Před 11 měsíci +2

      I got the kit from the same store I got the door. In my case it was Menards. The extension kit needs to come from the same manufacturer as the door.

  • @43wagonwheel
    @43wagonwheel Před rokem

    Couldn't you do the extension on the other side? This way you dont have to remove the brick mould?

    • @HomeSource
      @HomeSource  Před rokem

      Unfortunately not because the door wouldn’t be able to open correctly. The hinges need to be even with the interior wall so it can open into the room.

      @@HomeSource Bummer. All the doors I can find are standard 4-9/16 and 6-9/16. My door frame width is 5-1/2. House built in 1923. What's my options? Thanks for your feedback.

    • @HomeSource
      @HomeSource  Před 2 lety

      Nope that one stays. We’ll retexture everything and when done you won’t be able to tell new from old. Very close to that stage now!

    • @duke81625
      @duke81625 Před rokem

      My bad! It's an in-swing exterior door. Can't put ehe jamb extensions on interior due to hinge interference.
