Conductor Harry Nugent - Watch The Closing Doors

  • Harry Nugent was arguably the most beloved subway conductor of all time. His well timed, funny and informative announcements made passengers smile with delight. This filmed piece is the last of three from the 5-25-1990 airing of 'The Eleventh Hour' hosted by Robert Lipsyte on Channel 13. To see the full episode and credits, click here.
Now they say 'Stand Clear of the Closing Doors', better than 'Watch the Closing Doors'. The door closing chime makes saying anything redundant. Just more verbiage to dilute the effective delivery of other messages. The people that this is directed at would no more heed a spoken warning than a fare beater hearing 'Pay your fare'! Old Harry had it right, he simply said 'Doors are closing'. More proof of his mindfulness of the passenger experience. Now, conductors are forbidden even to speak in the seconds that the train is arriving in the station. The reason: to reduce the chance that the the doors without the train being properly berthed at the platform.

Transit doesn’t want anyone emulating his style. He was in violation of multiple rules of our strict announcement regulations. He got away with all of it because the media got on his side & posted articles about what he was doing and how the riders liked it. The other 3000+ conductors had to follow the “blue book” of scheduled announcements made up by those in charge. At that time, it was a man named Dr Diekman.

Ah yes... I remember him well. He announced on the IRT #1. His syntax and approach were startling to passengers used to a begrudging mumble marking each station stop. "Bound on our odysee to to South Ferry, we find Lincoln Center, the Juilliard School, Avery Fisher Hall, and the Mormon Center..."
It was real New York. Lots of people tried to force down their smiles - without success.

I remember as a kid there used to be a conductor that would only say "watch the doors" and nothing else at each stop. I also remember conductors having to go back and forth between the 5th and 6th car to open doors on the B line. I believe he needed to be in the 5th car to opent he doors on the left side of the train, and the 6th car to open the doors on the right side.

This is a charming video. I had a bad experience with a bus driver a couple weeks ago. Late for a dinner invitation, I hopped on a crosstown bus just because it was there & I was a little late.
I kept trying to put my senior citizen metro card into the slot & it kept giving me a "wrong way" signal. I must have tried four times or more & finally asked the bus driver what was wrong?
He told me I was using my drivers license by mistake. Friends said he'd gotten off watching me as entertainment.

    - Unfortunately, the bosses call what C/R Nugent did "Unauthorized Announcements". I wonder if he ever gotten written up for them. But the Transit Authority is good for being hypocritical about such things. Celebrate one C/R for doing something 99% of the other C/Rs on the workforce would be called on the carpet for.

For 59th Street Columbus Circle Station, he mentioned John Jay and American Bible Society, but not New York Institute of Technology (NYIT)? Train conductors never mention NYIT, which is closest to the 59th Street station. NYIT did exist before the 1990s, although the Old Westbury Campus is the Main Campus. I'm a Brit who has never been to NYC but reading up, Harry would have been one of the old guard and there through all of the Subway's bad times - conductors like him must have been men of steel. The only question I have is about his announcing on one part - sounds like "Hellston on the one", but the map I'm looking at makes reference to Houston Street - was this something conductors referred to in the area? Also looking at the end part he's at 242 Street, guessing he might have been based there and the way he speaks about being kicked in the leg indeed reinforces he was an old school transit worker who could deal with a lot of stuff......

And you're assuming that the handful of people who said great things about his man are lonely? Also, what NYC law states you can't tell people where things are? He's not on a sightseeing bus, and conductors get asked these kinds of questions all the time. What backwards alternate dimension did you slither from?
