Conductor Harry Nugent - Watch The Closing Doors

- Harry Nugent was arguably the most beloved subway conductor of all time. His well timed, funny and informative announcements made passengers smile with delight. This filmed piece is the last of three from the 5-25-1990 airing of 'The Eleventh Hour' hosted by Robert Lipsyte on Channel 13. To see the full episode and credits, click here.
Now they say 'Stand Clear of the Closing Doors', better than 'Watch the Closing Doors'. The door closing chime makes saying anything redundant. Just more verbiage to dilute the effective delivery of other messages. The people that this is directed at would no more heed a spoken warning than a fare beater hearing 'Pay your fare'! Old Harry had it right, he simply said 'Doors are closing'. More proof of his mindfulness of the passenger experience. Now, conductors are forbidden even to speak in the seconds that the train is arriving in the station. The reason: to reduce the chance that the the doors without the train being properly berthed at the platform.
Im a conductor. Harry Nugent trained me on the number 1 line in 1993. He was one of a kind to say the least. Im currently working the number one line.
are you still working the number one line?
You still work there ?
Nah he’s retired by now
We need conductors like him today!
I've seen (or heard) a few really good ones. But nothing like this guy.
Transit doesn’t want anyone emulating his style. He was in violation of multiple rules of our strict announcement regulations. He got away with all of it because the media got on his side & posted articles about what he was doing and how the riders liked it. The other 3000+ conductors had to follow the “blue book” of scheduled announcements made up by those in charge. At that time, it was a man named Dr Diekman.
There's a conductor on the 6 train that goes, "Steppp alllll the way out, steppp all the way in, the next stop is..."
Brandon Hu I've seen him so much and the speakers deafen my ears.
He's still there to this day. He's a good guy.
Ah yes... I remember him well. He announced on the IRT #1. His syntax and approach were startling to passengers used to a begrudging mumble marking each station stop. "Bound on our odysee to to South Ferry, we find Lincoln Center, the Juilliard School, Avery Fisher Hall, and the Mormon Center..."
It was real New York. Lots of people tried to force down their smiles - without success.
i was lucky to hear this man just once when I was about 9 years old. lol.
"southbound1trainnexstopis18thstreetstandclearclosingdoors" is all I hear today
And all I see are chinese restaurants!
All I hear today is “ThisIsAManhattanBound6TrainTheNexstopishhuuhuhhuh.”
we really need more conductors like Harry Nugent!!
when you realize they have the same trains
meek miLL NO THE CAB HE WAS IN IS A HALF CAB UNLIKE THE TRAINS TODAY BEING REPLACED BY FULL CABS
R32 R33 R36 R42 R46 R44 R62 FAN Love em when u realize ur channel name is long af and the comment was posted 1yr ago
We need people like these...
The human face of the worlds greatest subway system.
I don’t know what I like better, his joyful announcements or how direct he is when announcing the closing of the doors. Not stand clear of the closing doors, it’s simply “doors are closing”.
It was such a treat to end up on his train!!
That guy must be a very happy person.
Obsessed with Trains think about it was 1990 everybody was Happy lol
Oh okay lol
jamel eason Not to be a downer but in 1990 NYC had over 2,000 homicides. :(
LOL THAT’S A BUMMER
I remember as a kid there used to be a conductor that would only say "watch the doors" and nothing else at each stop. I also remember conductors having to go back and forth between the 5th and 6th car to open doors on the B line. I believe he needed to be in the 5th car to opent he doors on the left side of the train, and the 6th car to open the doors on the right side.
My old man was a Conductor as well. 24 years NYC Transit badge number #81000...I love and miss you poppa.
Awesome conductor! If only there could be more like him!
Yes i remember him.. they are others like him too.. a few. but their out there.
Retired long ago.
Car Number #2166 Is Now A Front Car On A 1 Train.
With the R32s leaving the rails for good this month, there are now that many fewer trains where you're likely to hear a live human voice along the way at all. Ironically the then-new R62A's we see him riding here are among the few exceptions and you still find them on the 1...for now.
This is a charming video. I had a bad experience with a bus driver a couple weeks ago. Late for a dinner invitation, I hopped on a crosstown bus just because it was there & I was a little late.
I kept trying to put my senior citizen metro card into the slot & it kept giving me a "wrong way" signal. I must have tried four times or more & finally asked the bus driver what was wrong?
He told me I was using my drivers license by mistake. Friends said he'd gotten off watching me as entertainment.
My Pop was a NYCTA Conductor for 24 years. Worked out of East 241st Street up in The Bronx.
We’re not allowed to make announcements like that lol
This video mad old bro 😭
It’s crazy to see how much the subway has changed
This video was filmed in 1990, so yeah it's a little old. But in 2023, those same subway cars in this video are still being used on the 1, and 6 train subway lines.
Personally I think the 1 line has the best and nicest people
- Unfortunately, the bosses call what C/R Nugent did "Unauthorized Announcements". I wonder if he ever gotten written up for them. But the Transit Authority is good for being hypocritical about such things. Celebrate one C/R for doing something 99% of the other C/Rs on the workforce would be called on the carpet for.
I rode the #1 up and down from Christopher St Sheridan Sq to 116th St Columbia Univ when I worked at St Luke's Hospital The best part of my day.
That's A Good Conductor
This came out in March Of 1990!
I just noticed that they don't have the warning thing on the door that says "Do not block the doors"
Good comment. My best example of a live conductor speaking is near the end of my R-40 Wazoo video. Ed Crew is another one that deserves to be documented for his announcing skills.
RIP South ferry loop
he iS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wonder what he says if the train is delayed in the middle of the tunnel??
0:10 pink 1 train lol
That's thee light bro
Would get on his train every morning when I started going to HS in Manhattan in 1989. All the other conductors would yell "step lively step lively". I think the MTA got sued for that.
Damn I was 2 when this came out smh lol
William Green I was 1
Great video! And awesome C/R of the IRT Broadway Line! Man things were diff in the 80s compared to the sh9t of today!
That’s 90s bro
3:47 Cool
My man tells the best jokes....cool folk
Playing that IRT 👍🏾👍🏾
Funny Guy On The R62A (1) Train Back In 1990.
Eric Court r62a looked weird back then
Nothing about what passengers do entertain these guys. They just want to get home on time and in one piece. He was probably tired and figured you would figure out the problem yourself. Sounds like your friends didn’t exactly jump to your aid to try to move things along faster for everybody.
Proof right here that live subway announcements are a dying art form.
this is awesome but i wouldn't want to be on his train when in a rush during morning time.
1:40 I remember watching conductors having to do that
What did they have to do exactly ?
Lord Humor, walk back and forth between cars
to accommodate the stations platform and open the door on the correct side. I used to see them do that all the time
Yo Jo Wow, times have changed. Thank you
For 59th Street Columbus Circle Station, he mentioned John Jay and American Bible Society, but not New York Institute of Technology (NYIT)? Train conductors never mention NYIT, which is closest to the 59th Street station. NYIT did exist before the 1990s, although the Old Westbury Campus is the Main Campus. By the way I'm a student at NYIT in the Manhattan campus.
Back then these R62s were the 2nd newest trains, the R68 first (I don't really follow the /A's)
Bence 3217 the 62a s cane out in 1987
@@r62aguy85 and the 62s entered service in 1984, 2 years before the first R68s (1986) appeared.
They should've gotten him for thr automated announcements.
Yes.
When I grow up I’ll be like this
I like him
I want to be exactly like Harry
Conductor Harry Nugget
Nice gard
+R62A I LOVE IT SO MUSH
Drunk commenting!
look the train cab R62A, the speed meter has analog
Do you still have conductors on the NYC Subway?
Your comment is the reason why conductors are not allowed to do this anymore...
I think he's retired now
Back when all r62s had the window frame with screws outside
The man mercifully retired. Some are giving illegal sightseeing tours, though. It is a violation of the NYC Admn. Code to do so.
Say what? You mean conductors can't even say what's around the station the train pulls in to?
I'm a Brit who has never been to NYC but reading up, Harry would have been one of the old guard and there through all of the Subway's bad times - conductors like him must have been men of steel. The only question I have is about his announcing on one part - sounds like "Hellston on the one", but the map I'm looking at makes reference to Houston Street - was this something conductors referred to in the area? Also looking at the end part he's at 242 Street, guessing he might have been based there and the way he speaks about being kicked in the leg indeed reinforces he was an old school transit worker who could deal with a lot of stuff......

@@trainluvr That's great, thanks for explaining : )
Do they still have conductors on the New York subway??
yes
Well duh

When did r62 have that cool front rail fan window?
1:03
2:16 what about the B & C trains? He only said A & D trains
Late night?
Benji Zhao no it was morning that time
can I have the link to the full episode
Old M logo
now how the fk did I get here
King Aphro idk bro I’m wondering the same thing
@keithsy75 Because today's transit workers are so much more interesting and kind.
Anyone know that song when the 1 train comes around the corner.
genius.com/Irt-interboro-rhythm-team-watch-the-closing-doors-lyrics
Is he still working
Did he die ?
Hey, whats that song in the beginning?!
Pablo Maneiro the song is “Watch the closing doors”
IRT. watch the closing doors
@keithsy75 @keithsy75 On the contrary, actually. Transit works are not respected because they are seen as unhelpful, uncompassionate, and sometimes plain rude. And you're assuming that the handful of people who said great things about his man are lonely? Also, what NYC law states you can't tell people where things are? He's not on a sightseeing bus, and conductors get asked these kinds of questions all the time. What backwards alternate dimension did you slither from?
Passengers may ask and receive information of locations, but at no time is an employee to volunteer information or give sightseeing lectures. That is a violation of the NYC Adm. Code. Also, Gray Line or any other carrier or even his own TWU could file a grievance against him and Transit.

This man was a clown and a buffoon. He made the job of the conductor a laughing stock. He played sightseeing guide, which is illegal. He had no sightseeing license. It is illegal to do so. The passengers know no better. They are lonely people looking for company. It is sad to see where the job has come. Transit workers are not respected and it is because of guys like him. I am glad that he is gone, but there are many more imitations like him.
Why u putting dirt on anmans name for and what did he do to u for to talk bad about him so
