Friends and family gathered in a small Hudson Valley town on Sunday to say a final farewell to Tony Award-winning actress Natasha Richardson.
Liam Neeson, in a dark suit and sunglasses, was at the head of the casket as he and five other pallbearers carried his wife's coffin into St. Peter's Episcopal Church, near the home where the two married in 1994.
He and Richardson's mother, actress Vanessa Redgrave, waved to the dozens of reporters crowded behind a police barricade on the dirt road leading to the tiny white clapboard church.
The grieving family, including the couple's two sons, Micheal, 13, and Daniel, 12, then paused to allow the media to photograph them in front of church before the service.
Ralph Fiennes, Alan Rickman, Laura Linney, Uma Thurman and Timothy Dalton were among the friends who filed into the church on the chilly spring afternoon.
After a graveside service under a large green tent, the 45-year-old actress was buried in a nearby cemetery, about 80 miles (128 kilometres) north of New York City.
She was laid to rest near the grave of her maternal grandmother, the actress Rachel Kempson, who died while visiting her granddaughter and Neeson at their home in nearby Millbrook in 2003.
Neeson and the Redgrave family, including Richardson's sister, actress Joely Richardson, visited Kempson's grave after the burial.
Richardson died on Wednesday at a Manhattan hospital after falling while skiing Monday at the Mont Tremblant resort in the Canadian province of Quebec.
The New York City medical examiner's office said Richardson suffered from an epidural hematoma, which causes bleeding between the skull and the brain's covering.
She wasn't wearing a helmet when she fell.
Richardson is descended from one of Britain's great acting dynasties but built her own reputation in films such as "Patty Hearst" and "The Handmaid's Tale," as well as for her work on the stage.
She won a Tony for her role in the 1998 revival of "Cabaret."
She co-starred with future husband Neeson in the 1993 revival of Eugene O'Neill's "Anna Christie."
The two married at their secluded Millbrook home the next year.
The famous couple was well known in this area, which counts many celebrities among its part-time residents.
The ceremony on Sunday caps off a grim week during which Neeson greeted a stream of friends and family during a private viewing on Friday at the American Irish Historical Society.
Celebrities paying respects this week included Diane Sawyer, Ethan Hawke and Sarah Jessica Parker.
Theatres on Broadway and London's West End dimmed their lights this week in honour of Richardson.
Her final feature film, "Wild Child," has been released internationally but not in the US, and Universal Pictures said a US release date had not been scheduled.

Evelyn Brown She was and will always be at the top of my list of greatest entertainers. To me, she and her husband Liam are old school (prior to the 1960s & era) stardom in every sense of the word.
Liam is a class act, still waving to the crown even in the midst of deep grief!
My grandfather died of the same thing. He was hit in the head while driving but remained conscience. He made it home and didn’t seek any help regarding his concussion. He went to bed and soon died.

As much as I feel badly for their lack of privacy, it does give the rest of us a chance to pay our respects in a way. The family was so gracious and they really had a right to be irritated. It goes to show you that even with the circumstances they didn't stoop to shoving cameras out of their face or cussing people out. How devastating.
I am related to the Redgraves , through ancestry. From one Redgrave to another , I wish you all love ,Peace, and faith during this difficult time.I know that I was proud to Enjoy this gracious woman's work, and her fierce loyalty to Liam. Her son's ,and her entire family. RIP Natasha!

Was with my mum when heard this sad news and just Two months later my mum passed away so i remember this so clearly.

She died of bleeding in the brain. After she hit her head while skiing, she refused help. If only she got help immediately after... they could’ve done an MRI on her and she could’ve went into surgery which would have saved her life. This is so tragic. She was so young and beautiful. Breaks my heart. If anyone ever hits their head hard enough, please don’t ignore it. Go see a doctor.😞
I came here after finding out how Bob Saget died. Brain injuries are a serious deal. Not too long ago a French actor also died from a head injury due to skiing.

@@damonorm7277 I figure she may have thought it wasn't that bad, like it didn't hurt that bad at the time so she refused help. Seems like if i had really hurt she would have went to the hospital.
@damon it was said that if she had received immediate medical care there’s a chance she would have pulled through. Natasha dismissed seeing the doctor and refused to see the paramedics until she started having a really bad headache.

Wow since Natasha passed, I'm now seeing her funeral and I'm sad all over again..she was so beautiful, kind, gentle and sweet as is Liam ..to see him wave at the media while being so heart broken tells you what kind of man he is as all his and Natasha's family....so very sad...I shall keep her in my heart forever.

Mrs. Richardson's funeral reminds me of my Aunt Christie,😢😢😢 who had died from cancer last Wednesday, and I went to her funeral, also dressed in black. I'll miss my aunt, who is now in Heaven with my grandfather and her previous cats.

she did, but it took some time and they lost the goldentime and she died.
If only the ambulance driver had taken her to the hospital anyway for a thorough checkup.
I'm hesitant to think that even going to the hospital right away would have helped. So very heartbreaking. She was one in a million.
She did, they sent her home and then when she got back to the hotel she knew something was wrong and then emergency services came to get her but it was too late, it was her time!

This is so sad. Too bad they couldn't get away from prying eyes. I give Liam credit for beings nice about it. RIP Natasha. Liam and Natasha were so much in love, and now she's gone. I hope that eventually he found a measure of peace and comfort. But I can't see anyone getting over something like this completely. When a loved one dies, sometimes a part of you goes with them.

Even if I didn't like the newer "Parent Trap" movie, my favorite things about it are Natasha Richardson's brilliant acting, and Shonen Knife's Alternative Indie cover of a folk song "Top of the World" by the Carpenters originally.

In my twenties, I did a little bit ok ski and stopped. I restarted in my late forties, and had a couple of bad falls: luckily, I always wear an helmet. I stopped because of the falls on my head(injured my teeth), and one of my knee is almost finish. No one is to blame in that death but, it certainly shows that an helmet is necessary in ski.

Well some people grieve, some people cry and some people laugh, it happens. In some countries you dont cry at a funeral you celebrate a life

At any funeral we always smile and laugh. Seeing all the people who mean something to us and to the person that passed away or to the people attending that had some love in their heart for the person that passed away, it’s beautiful when everyone gathers together to remember and to say goodbye. The sadness and tears normally come in the quiet alone times before the funeral, during the speeches, burial and after the funeral. It’s not that odd.

Lucia Angeli Don't try to evaluate a person's grief. It's a huge mix of emotions. This lady was truly loved by her family and friends. I do know that. Note though...these people were used to cameras and just trying to be gracious. I'm sure their off camera faces held tears.
