This game gives the impression is going to be an easy kids game simply by being a Smurfs game. While the levels are short, there are plenty of challengies ahead if only due to precision jumping skill requirements.
The game has some nice levels in that it mixes up different styles of gameplay in order to to be too boring. Stand out levels are the minecart and the downhill sled.
Most anoying level must be the volcano where you have to aourun the lava rising and then chuck presents at the dragon boss which was a pain as you have to wait for one to expload before throwing another which requires timming while jumping. The bosses were generally easy apart from the final boss which takes a while for me to get a rythem going .
More effort could have gone into adding speech to the intro/outro, but i guess they didn't want to have to record multiple languages. -

Had this game on SNES. What a damn hard game. You'd think a game based on the Smurfs would be ridiculously easy...
For one thing, one touch from a black fly or black Smurf means instant death.

I remember this game being hard as balls when i was young
It still is, I've just finished it on easy and it was far from easy
@@longballplease impressive, you may be the first person to do it
Ohhhhhh! That reminds me... I'll download an snes rom like that
Never made it past the field stage. Damn this game ! Correction: made it to the mountain level lately.
Gameplays make it look like a piece of cake but if you played it, you remember: it was hard as FUCK. I remember I reached this level on a swamp or something like that and finally lost. I played a lot but I don't think I even did half the game.
This brings back so many memories. Never finished this game when I was a kid.
60 minutes? dude i couldn't even beat it in 17 years
Do you remember the level in the woods? do you remember THE FUCKING BRIDGE?!
beautiful soundtrack!
Ио
Creepy.
omg I remember being the bubble level the toughest!!
Ah yes. With the bad controls.
This overly long rant is directed at the "Mega Drive colour sucked!" people.
The Mega Drive was capable of brilliant colour in games, a lot of developers just didn't bother or know how to program for it properly. Take a look at Gunstar Heroes, Castle of Illusion, Strider, Ristar, Ragnacenty, Tiny Toons: Buster's Hidden Treasure, Rocket Knight, Sparkster, Pulseman, 3X3 Eyes (M-CD), Lunar: Eternal Blue (M-CD), DAIHOUSHINDEN (M-CD), Keio Yugekitai (M-CD), Mickey Mania (I only have the m-CD version, but they should be the same apart from music and voice samples) and of course, the incredibly beautiful Flink on the M-CD among others and tell me how much the MD's colour sucked. I would rather have less colour than a friggin 8-bit processor like the SFC had anyway. Tricks to make colour better were developed by the TOP development teams, nothing could fix the Super Famicom's Famicom 8-bit processor. Not even Capcom's fancy special chips.
Speaking of Crapcom, they are a perfect example of shitty programing on the MD. SFII would have looked (and sounded!) SO much better if it had been programmed by Sega. Every Capcom developed game looked like shit colourwise on the MD and that was Capcom's fault, not the MD's hardware. Every early Capcom game on the MD was licensed to Sega and every one of them looked better than anything Capcom did themselves. Sega's Capcom games were almost all very early in the system's life and only 4 or 8-mbit, yet they did amazing jobs with most of them. Final Fight CD is an example of how much better Sega could have made SFII on the MD, especially if it had been an M-CD game as well. Capcom obviously never gave a shit about the MD versions of their games. You also had all the US and Euro MD games that almost always looked shitty next to Japanese games.
Still, I will always lament the Mega-CD as a huge missed opportunity for Sega. They put in that amazing scalling and rotating chip in the system but it was barely used because it was "hard to program for". It had proper, arcade quality FULL scalling and rotation, unlike the SFC's Mode 7 which was only a single sprite or background. You only have to compare something like Batman Returns or the many CORE games to see how superior the M-CD's chip was. But just like the SFC's slow processor, having a fancy chip in a system is useless if no body (including the company that MADE the thing!) uses it! The M-CD is the ONE AND ONLY time I wish Sega had listened to SoA. SoA pleaded with Sega to add better graphic chips into the Mega-CD for more colour, backgrounds and sprite handling. They didn't bother to listen.
I think, a blast processor beating in your chest, just like in me.
Haha, that obvious, is it? I will be a SEGA fanboy 'till the day I die!
A Shaw Could you imagine Shinobi III or Robocop vs Terminaor on Sega CD?
Those ports would have been the next level for SEGA. Lost possibilities...
Oh man, there are so many MD games I can imagine on the M-CD! Just about any game made after mid 1992 I wished was on the M-CD. I always wished Treasure made their games on CD because if they could pull off such an incredible spectacle of special effects that was Gunstar Heroes on the MD, I bet they could have done some amazing things with the M-CD hardware.
Final Fight CD showed exactly how perfect arcade games could be on CD and it really sucks that so many arcade games were put on cartidge before and after FFCD was released. Maybe if SoJ had released Samurai Spirits and FF Special on CD themselves, they would not have sucked like the Victor/JVC releases do. Instead they put Samurai Spirits on cart. Art of Fighting in cart was a joke too! It should have been on CD with scalling intact! I'll never understand it. Sammy did an OK job with Sengoku Densho, but it was nowhere as close a conversion as FFCD was. And of course, none of the scalling effects from the NEO-GEO version are in it.
I also hate the fact that Phantasy Star IV was being made on CD and then the dickheads at SoJ decided to make it on cartridge instead. Thank god for Game Arts and the Lunar games, my favourite games ever along Grandia on the Saturn. Lunar: The Silver Star literally sold the M-CD in Japan when it was released because it was such a highly anticipated game. Yet SEGA themselves could not get the concept of "make big games on the system and it will sell". Landstalker is my favourite MD game of all time, it would have been so amazing on CD.
Popful Mail was also a godsend but I wish the other SEGAFALCOM games were on CD. Why the Dragon Slayer: Legend of Heroes games were on cart I will never understand, especially because they had already been such big sellers on the PCE SuperCD. If they were on CD, they would have been the ultimate versions. I wish Ys IV had been released too, or at least moved to the Saturn.
The really stupid thing to me is that SEGA kept making games on cart with awesome software scalling effects, like Monster World IV, yet a very similar game like Popful Mail had not a single special effect from its scaling chip. When they did use it for Sonic CD's special stages, it was crap and "mode 7" like with no scaling on anything but the floor. There should have been special effects all throughout that game, just as SNES games always had. Ooops, that turned into another, rant, lol! This subject tends to bring that out in me.
@Mr Computer That would be awesome. Would love to see that
Such great music.... *miss the old days...*
OO, the music in the cave (riding the rail thing) is the same as when flying the magic carpet in aladdin
Had no idea that there was a mega cd version of this game, looks no different than the genesis version in terms of graphics but the music seems to have been arranged.
This animation is still better than the Zelda and Mario one.
And my drawing, ;~;
Goodness, I love the Smurfs.
The animation is exactly the same as the Hanna-Barbera Saturday Morning series which aired on NBC from 1981 to 1990.
I loved them too at the age of 6 :( sadly they ended a long time ago.
@@danalong1237 No, it's not. The animated sequences present here stick much closer to the original comic book designs than the Hanna-Barbera series ever did.
aww good old smurfs I remember this game used to play it all the time cool video as well.
The crappy End Movie could be a great Meme.
They couldn't even afford Gargamels Voice Actor.
Thanks for mastering this difficult Game.
Yeah i was expecting full cartoon cutscenes with voice actors. This is another example of a game that squandered the Mega CD's awsome capabilities of video and sound. I actually think the NES version is the best Smurfs game, really good music.
how do you jump so high at 31:46?? i cant!!
I have a same problem with you, and i finally get the answer! press both jump and running keys.
Those graphics look beautiful.
Game looks good. Music is great, though they should add a jump sound effect for the Smurf.
Sheesh, that final boss takes a million hits.
Gargamel????
it reminds me old days... old but gold
Holy crap the music absolutel epic
Can't We just go AROUND the forest?
Does anyone know of or have a list of all the stars in the game?
this is really creepy whats up with that guys outline but that bubbles bit LOL
It’s called I travel terribly up a tree and die:
Kinda reminds me of "Mickey Mouse and the Castle of Illusion". I gotta play this game now!
Looks fun!
I wonder if SMG4 can make, "What if Mario is in... The Smurfs"
Oh my god
Hey, that's true! I've never ever seen a game about the Snorks!
This game still haunts me...
The fields say hello.
*The fields wanted to tell you that your car has an extended warranty*
Most developers didn't know how to use color palettes on SEGA games. Strange as it may seem, but the SEGA 16 Bit is capable of colors and graphics like SNES. Gunstar Heroes or Light Crusader are good vibrantly colored games that stand out of the Norm. The company TREASURE, who used to work for Konami on projects like CONTRA 3 and SUPER CASTLEVANIA 4 (some of my fav SNES games), said because of their experience making games on SNES, they understood how to make graphics on SEGA look colorful.
Esa música es excelente tan buena que no queda con el juego
OMG! Stringanime replied to me! :DD!
I love your Splatterhouse flash game! And ikr! SCV 4 is one of my faves to, I'm the happy owner of the original cartridge for SNES.
And Contra 3 Alien Wars was so cool! I dont have the cartridge :(
when i was a child i always play it and that game is so funny for me :)
It's not letting me jump up onto the switch on the cave level
Where can I get this game? I can't find it anywhere. I'm looking for the actual game I can play on my NA Sega CD and not a rom. Thanks for the video!
I'm glad you were looking back there. Thanks!
Thanks for the info. I appreciate it.
Thanks!
Nostalgia lagi cuuy
This game makes me have a craving for sarsaparilla.
I remember this game. It was hard as FUCK. I remember I reached this level on a swamp or something like that and finally lost. I played a lot but I don't think I even did half the game.
The cave stage is not almost pitch black compared to the SNES version counterpart. Must be due to hardware limitations, huh ?
Yes there are some effects not seen in the MD-version, like the fog in the swamp level.
Another big difference is that you can actully junp a bit higher in the MD-version. As the MD version was realesed later, i guess they did thar to make the game a little easier.
What have to put in PASSWORD in Menu options ? Please :)
sega mega CD had awsome musics jeez
This is just like the Snes-version. The music is exactly the same. Did they release the game on a CD just to have Snes-quality music on a MegaDrive?
The theme music was actually composed by the late Hoyt Curtin, who did lots of music for Hanna-Barbera back then.
Oh. I actually just watched the gameplay. Didn't see the intro vid either.
The intro video is actually the same as the syndicated Smurfs Adventures opening. My oldest son grew up watching The Smurfs on NBC and in reruns on USA, Cartoon Network and currently Boomerang.
smurf: why? me: who u callin pinhead?
@@grahampayne9235 Smurf : (Looks At Septa)

48:40 And then Brainy Smurf suddenly became so smart he accidentally broke the game code itself.
Notice how MCD games look exactly the same in terms of color when compared to MD games? That's why I said 1988, the # of colors shown on screen didn't increase. This game, while good, is an example of why the MCD didn't take off as it's one of many ports of MD games which only had relatively minor enhancements like added cutscenes and better sound.
The Smurfs were a way better fit for this than Mickey Castle of Illusion
I never went past the mine. Today I saw the whole game.
Easiest level in the whole game. All you need to do is to press one buttom when you hear the signal and do that a few times, no steering or anything. You can also get hit 3 times and still finnish the level.
Well, it looks like Smurf on sega cd there is no question
48:38
Uhh... I am going to say that it didn't load the correct graphics.
awesome game. I saw someone saying 1988, funny thing, cuz the mega cd was released on december, 1991 in japan and in europe in april, 1993
Very creepy music for a kids game. The field, swamp, lake at night, cave are creepy.
@Bakasura Agreed. Music on the fields is nightmare inducing...
other then the music and video is there any difference between this and the genesis?
No, same game I believe
bonus level track could have been used in Sonic 1 mega drive version as special stage track
cute ~ great ~ wonderful ~ smurf-a-rrfic :)
is there copies of this game on the american version of the sega cd
no it was a european mega cd exclusive and good luck finding a copy it is 1 if not the rarest mega cd game, expect to pay atleast £150-£200
@@SEGAtendo1989 Are you aure about that? There is artwork for the Sega CD version if you google it. it has another cover on it.
@@johanneskjellstrom2187 almost certain, I was collecting for the mega cd at the time everywhere I looked said smurfs was only released here in Europe.
Those Google images could be from someone who did a custom cover with a burned disc or maybe it is cancelled before release there
Had the Mega Drive version of this as a kid, music is way too loud in this one, can barely hear the sound effects! Also nice job on the voice acting for the ending cut scene guys. :S
I Respect Your Opinion On This Version (Like)
This smurfs CD uses less sound fx sounds than the other versions.
EVERY TIME WHEN I SEARCH SEGA OR SEGA CD THIS POPS UP WHY
a good and a smurfing game
20 colours is a huge exaggeration, ~30 I would say is the _average_ number after having painstakingly checked about 100+ roms over time (I'll send you the screens if you want), but 60+ is very rare. Ecco 2, Torunament Fighters, SoR 2, Ranger X, Mega Turrican, Street Racer, Vectorman, Super Fantasy Zone and Lost World are some of the best examples, some of which going well over 64 colors in-game using the shadow/highlight effect.
So Jokeys presents are attempted murder after all.
The original SNES version of the boss music is much better. This one is scary.
This game (as well as other Infogrames titles) is famous in France for being absurdly difficult and full of stupid traps and questionable game design choices... and well, because all of these negative aspects ended up in a Smurf games of all things, and the Smurfs being a Belgian comic widely distributed in France helped it gain this reputation over here.
This was the subject of one of the first reviews by Joueur du Grenier (our French AVGN).
I didn't know about this Mega CD variant though!
You have a point there, and yes, many of those games are way to hard. But i think that this game is really good one and it was praised by severel french gaming magazines back when it came out. 15/20 from Jeuxvideo, Consoles Plus gave it 92 out of 100. The atmosphere from the Smurfs is totally captured here. The graphics and soundtrack are great. There is good variations in environments and level design. its quite hard, but you do have severel difficulty settings. I have played many much harder games then this. You should give it a try!
So? The hardware didn't magically improve during the time inbetween.
where's the snorks love?
who you callin pinhead? wut ur calling da smurf pinhead no offense they should add a sound for when the smurf gets into the bubble and when he jumps dat intro though lol the smurf was like: why? why is it always me?
And then Patrick appears and is like: w h o u c a l l i n g p i n h e a d
Oh Smurf Me!
even like this, the game looks inhumanly hard to me
I wish that game was in nintendo DS
YES SIR! I will check it out right away and share it with my friends! :DD
I made a Splatterhouse game too, I will send you an inbox with the video :DD
Awesome, Im talking to Stringanime! 8D
Personally, I think both consoles were pretty good.
The SNES had nice hardware and the Genesis had nice games and addons. (while they were a bit pointless and the 32X just sucked.)
Glad i don’t own those ugly clunky addons for the genesis since most games are already on the genesis itself unless i was really really that greedy about extra power.
*OH WHOLE A SHIT*
*Where*
*YOU NOT SEE IT*
*Ayo why is he in a bubble*
*DUNNO*
This is the same thing as revenge of the smurfs it just has longer and less levels.
Porque los pitufos y gargamel no pudieron hablar en el juego
why no voice acting?
The music reminds me of Banjo Kazooie
The language select should've been first to allow for voices. I never heard of this release before. It must've been released in Europe only, since the franchise was only briefly popular in the US in the 80s.
The Sega CD came out in 1991 in Japan, '92 in America, and '93 in Europe. *Sega CD didn't exist in the '80s.*
i don't know if it's on my side only, but at 48:46 i'm seeing stripes
Number of colors is in no way limiting or even related to the brightness or saturation value of said colors, and you being able to use wikipedia doesn't change that fact. But maybe you should've read some more before replying because the MCD did nothing to help with the MD color limitations. Therefore yes, 1988 is the correct year when talking about the color pallette.
I discovered the other day, using emulators with the Kreed filter. Snes looked much worst. Genesis seemed HD. I thought it was the emulator. Thanks for the data
A black smurf?? Interesting. Never knew they existed in the smurfs cartoons. Hehe
0:33 *Bro just got punched in the face*

Bom, eu já bati final também, sem continue e nem nada, mas foi depois de muito treino kk
Esse jogo não joguei mais esse jogo da para botar no Brasil.
wikipedia? I have both systems I don't need wikipedia (which is normally wrong) I've got the manuals for both snes and genesis, you said it was by choice, not the palette.
And you know it WAS because of the palette. But anyway, have a nice day.
still one of the harder platformer games out there.
Looks like a fantastic platforming action game! Too bad it was only released in PAL territories.
Fun Fact : The Only Way To Get The Smurfs Game In USA Is The Game Boy Version
@@danielpedricothe2nd376 You can install a region free BIOS chip in your Sega CD and play any region game.
Gargamel semble plus difficile dans cette version que dans la version NES
You can play the Game Boy Advance version! It's pretty much the same thing :)
@ilijathephantom4547you're thinking of the smurfs nightmare-
@@sgnjamcitydevteam6913 The smurfs nightmare was for the Gameboy Color. This game was realesed for the Gameboy Advance also but with a new name. Revenge of the Smurfs.
Nintendo knew Color count and index doesn't make your game colorful, choices in color does, I say this because even ZELDA for SNES didn't rely on their big color palette. As for SEGA, You'd be hard pressed to show me a game for SEGA Genesis that uses more than 20 colors on screen at once. There are few exceptions. Tech is great but if you don't use it, well you just aren't using it. I was telling another guy that a good example of how detailed and colorful a SEGA game can be is LIGHT CRUSADER.
You know, I find the soundtrack in this game very distracting.
It's like, the songs are going somewhere but because they're so short, they doesn't.

OMGAAAAA
How hard is this game
Say a number between 0 to 10
8 out of 10. Some areas takes a lot of practice and you have to get used to the sometimes slippery controlls.
Huha I'm a vegetable
88? SEGA CD in 1988? XD
And of course not, if you know anything about old school home video game systems, you would know that SEGA had a Custom ASIC graphic processor with 512 colors and allowed 64 on screen, against the 256 colors on screen on the SNES; That's why ALL (Not only this one) SEGA CD games were darker.
Magnifique musiques qui me rappelle le temps de mozart
