    1. This is a British-born actress (parents from Nigeria) who was asked to come in 2015 to continue with a play, The Color Purple, on Broadway as the leading actress as she was doing in England. She got rave reviews for the year she did it and won a Tony, Emmy, and Grammy from her electrifying performances on The Color Purple and GMA. She did a couple movies then got the movie, Harriet. She was nominated for 2 Oscars for the movie she stared in (leading actress and song), as Harriet Tubman. There was some controversy from a few because she was British and not American but was portraying a slave in America. She asked that people give her a chance to prove herself right for the roll and she did. It grossed over 40 million. She is young and worked so hard for this opportunity and has shown gratitude along the way. She also apologized for a statement she made that made a handful of black Americans upset because they felt she was mocking or talking negatively about them. She said it really wasn't meant the way it was received, and she wished they'd given her the chance to explain what she meant. 2. The song is about Harriet, a run away slave, who escaped slavery (in her 20s) traveling 100 miles (on the run/foot) to freedom. She was not content with just being free herself. She was determined Stand Up and go back (exactly 13 times...alone) and take her family and others (her people of color...slaves) with her to a new "free" home. She freed about 70 or so slaves by foot traveling through states to safe ports (Underground Railroad) and another 700 after becoming a spy and leader of an expedition in the Civil War. Every word in the song was true and acted out by her in the movie. Harriet was scared (because she knew may were hunting her down) and had the weight of the world on her shoulders, but was willing to die to save others from slavery for as long as she had to and could. She listened to God and her spirit to guide them to freedom each time. She hid and song songs with codes in them to let the slaves know where she'd be and when they'd leave. Cynthia co-wrote the song as well. She studied Harriet for months (the smallest of details) and dove into this character to do her justice. You should really watch the movie one day. You will then better understand her connection with this song... but she dives into every song and performance this way. She said she has to feel it, and that's the only way she wants to perform. The last quiet words of the song (I go to prepare a place for you) are Harriet's last words before she died. Hope this helps! Sorry so long.

Cynthia Erivo is a Brit. This was an original song for the biopic of Harriet Tubman which she also starred in. The song was nominated for an Oscar (she lost to Elton John *rolls eyes*). This movie was putting her on pace to be the youngest EGOT winner in history cause she already has an Emmy, Grammy, and Tony (she won that playing Celie in “The Color Purple) oh and she just started breaking into mainstream movies. Oh yes, react to her and the cast of the Color Purple performing on the Today Show!

She deserves an Oscar and a Grammy for this song/movie. Her acting is so good, very heartfelt, very genuine on its emotions. Her performances are often very fierce but when I see her speaking, she's surprisingly sweeter? Very feminine and intelligent, she has a non-agressive, polite and level-headed type of confidence. Grownded. Intuitive. Graceful. That's the impression I have of her as a person.

This song is in the credits (at the end) of the film "Harriet", in which she portrayed Harriet Tubman (born Araminta Ross), an American abolitionist and political activist. She was a slave from the XIX century who escaped slavery in her early adulthood by migrating to another region, then she participated in various rescue missions to liberate other slaves, starting with her friends and family members (later on she even helped them get to Canada, always travelling by foot). Harriet became part of the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad, she served as an army leader during the American Civil War and during the second part of her life she was an activist for the movement of women's suffrage.
I'm not an expert on her story, but from what I read about her, it seems Harriet was a woman who, despite her sociopolitical circumstances and not reciving formal education, had an extremely well developed moral compass, she had an enormous willpower and capacity to learn skills such as geography/how to travel on foot without getting lost on the wilderness, she was very family oriented (her determination/desire to free her people seemed to be largely motivated by her instinct to protect her relatives and future generations)... What stayed with me about her the most is that she was a true leader.
So, going back to this performance, this is what I see in the storytelling: the people on the back dressed similarly are representing black people being united, fighting together for their freedoom and rights, Cynthia is placed at the center, surrounded by the circle of lights, in order to show that she's the type of leader who guides other with her light (her vision), through the darkness (oppression, abuse), towards a better future.

Cynthia Erivo is my favourite entertainer, he voice & acting abilities are remarkable; everything I've seen of her, so far, has just drawn me in.
I remember seeing Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl when I was four years old; I would often listen to the film & her performance & try to imitate her. This is the same way I feel about Erivo. 😊

Dr. Marc, i am now not only a fan of Cynthia Erivo but a fan of you. Your analysis was spot on----i loved it. I'm sure you know by now that this song is from the movie Harriet---as in Harriet Tubman, the freedom fighter. Cynthia Erivo, as you have so eloquently communicated, is telling the story of her journey. What I like so much that you said is that she takes us with her. I unsubbed from a bunch of "vocal coaches" because I realized that they were pretending to know what they were talking about. Like the ones that I unsubbed from would just spew random vocal terminology that made no sense where they said it. For example, they would just randomly say "support... lyrics... forward... belting... head voice... dynamics... larynx..." it really got on my nerves.

Cynthia Erivo has a well respected theatre background plus has studied at the Royal Academy in England so she knows her craft well. She is credited with co-writing this song for the exquisite movie "Harriet" directed by the talented Kasi Lemmons. Cynthia has said that the story of Harriet Tubman affected her greatly and that even though she is English this is her story, her history. So when you recognize her attachment to this song it is because it's true for her. She not only portrayed Harriet Tubman she lived her life. I can only guess but I would expect that we see "body memory" as we watch her devine performance, that everytime she sings this song she is again running toward the east. The stage setting was gorgeous if not a bit incongruent with the actual story. What I noticed was the white people among the back up singers. Since this song tells the story of Harriet's escape and her position as a Conductor on the underground railroad the ensemble should reflect the story. I have no problem with mixed groups but in a production such as this the casting can't be colorblind, it should be specific in it's casting. It's tantamount to casting Viola Davis to play Scarlett O'Hara, great actress but it'd make no sense. It's important to do this correctly for the Oscar's because that's a huge platform and an opportunity to showcase Cynthia Erivo, Kasi Lemmons and the story of Harriet Tubman to an audience that may not know of her, many don't because Black History is not taught. In today's climate it's necessary to teach at every opportunity.

He says never give 100%....tell that to Patti Labelle and Aretha Franklin. That advice works sometimes, for some artists, but you got to know when to hold back and when to go full throttle; and it's okay to sometimes do that. The best artists know when to pick their moments.

Cynthia Erivo is a theatre actress and singer. She is a Nigerian who grew up in Britain. She played Celie from Colour Purple in London, and then again on Broadway, which earned her a Tony. Over the years, she has won an Emmy, and a Grammy too, and was nominated for two Oscars-one for Best original Song, which you just watched, and one for Best Actress- a few weeks ago(if she had gotten at least one of them, she would have been an EGOT winner). She has been starring in Hollywood films the last few years, each getting more attention than the last. The most attention was for Harriet, the movie for which she was nominated, and for which she has garnered a lot of controversy among the African American community. She has been blasted, not just because she isn't African American, but because of comments she's made over the years on social media which the African American community has seen as offensive. That being said, her reputation as an exceptional singer AND actress has been growing, so we'll see if she's able to make amends and have the focus on her talent.
