Annette Crosbie is absolutely brilliant in this, the way she delivers the line “I might as well have been a tree” is comedic gold 😂
Ricky has two great talents.
1) His humour.
2) Finding brilliant actors for his characters.
Patrick Stewart immediately said yes to Extras, but then got a bit worried when Ricky said "you don't what I want you to do yet"
David Earl, just superb.
Same actors in everything Derek .. this !
And 3. Touching people’s heart.
They use the same actor/actress cast in most of his bbc series
It's an extremely rare show that can make you laugh out loud and cry, all in half an hour.
@godisbollocks your comment is SPOT ON.
Yeah, but not literally.
@@iim4xii129 So, you *figuratively* laugh out loud? What does that even mean?
@@godisbollocks I mean that this show doesn't make you laugh or cry at all.
@@iim4xii129 Are you a sociopath?
The woman who plays the wife of Dennis/Denise is absolutely brilliant. Her delivery is so spot on, I don't know how anyone kept a straight face 😂❤
Might be Lucy Speed who was in Eastenders.
Looked very much like Lucy Speed, she is a great actress
Her face was almost blank when she posed for the picture, but it expressed everything up to that point.
@@Simon_PieMan It is Lucy Speed
I think the botox helped her.
The actress who played the last lady - absolutely brilliant. A quite brilliant scene in fact.
For all his harsh comic acting Ricky writes some quite touching scenes.
Is it the nurse from Derek? The young one?
Vicky? From Derek?
@bradford - correct indeed.
I'd forgotten about this scene, truly beautiful and very moving.
Loneliness is still a taboo subject. I'm glad Ricky's writing shows such sensitivity, respect and dignity.
My respect for this man grew massively after that awards speech he did . A genuinely decent man .
true
The lady at the end was heartbreaking. Ricky is such an amazing writer he can go from laugh out loud lines straight to ones that pull on your heart strings
Love Ricky or hate him this show is so wonderful and tragic, so heartbreak and uplifting.
It almost encapsulates perfectly what life is.
I loved every second of it even all the heartbreak.
One of the best things I ever watched on TV. Ricky is a genius. Uncontrollable laughter and then a big lump in your throat, within 5 minutes of each other. Such a powerful insight into human emotions. Complete genius. I will watch the whole thing again at some point.
I just finished watching all 3 seasons .. cried after every single episode...... every single one 😭😭😭😭😭
- I was furious. Still am.
- Are you?
Brilliant.
Not really brilliant tho is it
Funniest bit 🤣
The old lady - "I might as well be a tree". Hilarious, all of it.
Ricky Gervais is one of the rare writer / Director / actors who can make you laugh uncontrollably then seconds later you cry uncontrollably. An absolute genius at writing human interactions
I never used to like him but his recent efforts have converted me
He managed to make me reverse park the Bengal tiger once. Was The Office christmas special when he was begging for his job. It was such a full-on episode I got emotional seasickness and greened out for the first time in twenty years...
@Oj Yes that one Ha ha, "reverse park the Bengal tiger" means to vomit. Same era as "I could eat the crotch out of a low flying duck" which means you're rather hungry, or calling someone who is socially awkward a "dag" which is a little bit of poo that sticks to a sheep's bum.
@Oj Yes that one Just that the emotional seesawing in the christmas episode of the office was enough to make me feel sort of seasick which even though I was a veteran stoner made me green out for the first time in twenty years and I spewed my guts up. Ricky Gervaise is a master of comedic pathos.
@Oj Yes that one 🤣🤣 Ricky Gervais is really good at making you laugh and cry and one time he did it so well I and laughed then cried too much and greened out 😁
Last one one really hit home. For no other reason than people can be blind to other people's loneliness, Ricky really knows how to tug at the heart strings. Everything he has done has always had an element of this in it.👍🏼
Yeah that's kind of the point. He's good at exploiting people like that
Eric Lawless -
I see your another member of the Lawless clan. I hail from Australia.
Cheers!
@@garylawless3608 ah cool. We are well spread out! I'm from ireland. Many more around the globe I'd imagine. Hope your safe and well during this crazy time.
Eric Lawless -
Yeah- we are still safe here, but it is getting a bit serious now. The Lawless name is spread everywhere around the globe I guess, but it is not that common nonetheless. Our branch started with my great-great grandfather who was born in County Meath in 1814 and transported to Australia as a convict in 1831. He married in 1842 after he received a ‘ticket of leave’, and had fifteen children. We spread out from there and we are a fairly large clan over here now. So I do have some Irish blood swimming around somewhere.
Cheers to you and yours, and keep safe
@You are correct But This guys just being silly, he'll learn in time to see the human connection this sort of stuff brings out of us. Have a good life mate
Bummed by the ghost of Liberace ! I’m crying 😂😂😂
haha that was classic lol
"That's the headline..."
Laughing so loud 🤣 dry bummed I bet
I love Sandy's reaction when she realises that the others are going to leave them with this guy, lol!
I can relate to the old lady at the end. would you like another cuppa tea, can i get you something to eat. The desperation of being left alone again. I'm sorry we've got to get going. This writing is so true to life i find it very moving. Tony Leicestershire UK. Thank you for uploading Tony.
Thank you, Tony.. best scene by far..!
I realised watching this that this was my mum in her last years before Alzheimers set in. I'd go round for Sunday lunch and always had to get away soon after. She would always offer me another coffee and/or biscuit; could she show me something in her garden, etc but I'd always have to go... when in truth I often didn't.
Eventually I gave up work and everything to look after her full time but by then it was too late. She was too far gone for us to enjoy many things together.
If only I could have those Sundays again I would clear my whole day when possible and go round early in the morning, help her in the garden or round the house and stay for supper as well.
Shoulda woulda coulda. Dont be me.
@@mikes5637 The problem is we all take things for granted, especially our parents, they've always been there, it's easily done, unfortunately. But even so, you were there Mike, when she needed you most, and some siblings run a mile from that responsibility, you didn't, that's a fact. Remember the good times, those memories are what keep them alive and bring their lives, and yours, meaning 👍
I dread the day my parents grow old and die 😭
@@AC-iz7eh It happens to us all. Spend time with them while they are still alive.
For all of Ricky Gervais' caustic humour, he also writes with incredible feeling and pathos. He's a truly decent man.
Every time I say, "he won't top this".....and of course he does... Afterlife is his best work yet, hilarious, tragic, brutally dark and heart wrenching...nothing like this has existed before...
disagree, this show seemed really forced. they were some funny scenes sure.
@@terminalfrost3645 really? You’re in the very small percentage that thinks that then. I really enjoyed this show
@@Wankle. No, it’s perhaps a far larger percentage than one might think. Perhaps a lot of the people with that (my) opinion are early day fans of XFM and Gervais etc, or people who don’t like such broad comedy. It seems to be quite a general consensus too, IMO, that Afterlife is a bit lazy with the constant crying and playing to the heart strings in every single episode. It’s very accessible to all, but I think that’s what detracts from any brilliance. Sure it has some fantastic moments, and I’m certainly not a comedy snob, but it’s very formulaic and ‘safe’.
This is my first time seeing a clip and the old guy says "got a prostate the size of a coconut" which on its own is already quite funny, but at the end it came back around to it again when taking the picture he said "hurry up got to take a piss" giggled like a girl
Only the 1st season worked properly imo that is but I'll still watch the new season
The "I was bummed by the ghost of Liberace" scene is in my top 3 best ever comedy moments. Just sublime! Thank you Ricky Gervais.
"Theres your headline" that character was brilliant as are most of Rickys characters.
Also " you should see my minge its like a butchers bin" is 2nd after the Liberace one.
"Like a butcher's bin" 😂😂😂😂😂
I. Some look horrific.
Hey she got it for half price
I don't get it.. because it's big?
@@djham2916 imagine the off cuts of meat a butcher would discard of...imagine that between a woman's legs 😄
Fucked my tearducts
I’m a psychotherapist and have heard some terrible, brutalising stories; this series captures so much, so perfectly about the despair of loss. It articulates what many people cannot.
Totally agree.
So touching was the last story
I too feel the pathos, so many minges that looked like a butchers bin.
Totally agree with you. My Mother has recently lost her second husband to COVID-19, she also was hospitalised with it together with pneumonia aged 98! She survived and has been moved to a nursing home for end of life care, going into a home was the one thing she loathed and never wanted. She is profoundly deaf and is now suffering from Alzheimer's and it is the latter that this programme in season one helped me with, not just coping with this illness but understanding it as well. Ricky Gervais is a very much undervalued talent and should have far more recognition than he currently gets!
"articulates"? You need to improve your vocabulary.
The old lady reminds me so much of my nana. She got to 102 and every time I’d visit, she would say how cruel god was for not taking her sooner. You just sit there waiting for the day to end hoping it’s your last. When we heard the news she had passed in her sleep, all of us were so happy for her.
Gervais is the anti celebrity. He has a kind heart and sees through all the bullshit.
The lady calling everyone names had me crying of laughter
The act of compassion at the end, was touching. That hug was a sweet touch to the scene.
Ricky Gervais is golden. This and Derek plays on so many different emotions that can have you crying with laughter and crying with sadness.
Pissing myself laughing, especially the "minge like the inside of a butchers bin" line then the last scene got me, like the whole series, Absolutely Brilliant
Ricky is a one off talent. To portray sad, mad and downright lonely like this is amazing and never been done before.Everyone should watch this and be a lot more tolerant.
its been done better by about 500 different people. watch better stuff

Ricky's "Are they?" @ 0:45 is priceless
I'm in bits after watching that last one with the cat.
I didn't see all of the last one, got a bit of dust in my eye.
I say this as someone whose wife died when she was just 40 years of age, I was 36. How Ricky Gervais manages to capture the reality of the life of a young widow/er is truly and utterly astounding!
If gervase is completely faking his deep connection with average people, he’s the greatest actor ever. If he’s not faking, it’s a heavy load he carries.
oh please. horseshit.
If you think Ricky Gervais is the greatest actor ever, a man who has played a total of 3 characters in his entire life (A shitty office manager, an offensive charicature of a disabled person, and himself) then you are the biggest fucking moron on the planet. The funny thing is, he'd probably agree with me.
I really hope he’s not 😢
What I love about Ricky is how he almost has his own company of actors who appear in a lot of his shows that he just keeps adding new members to as time goes on. They must love working with him as they all come back
they come back because they're paid to, that's literally how it works
@@urmumsbaps and they definitely enjoy working with him
@@urmumsbaps but hes not switching them around is her point
Hey, a job's a job.
Ricky Gervais what a legend, makes you laugh and cry at the same thing.
How they got through the minge line without bursting is beyond me. Brilliant stuff.
He's not acting he's reliving old memories with his family and friends ........working class hero....
Crack up and cry in 60 seconds flat. This is what actors and writers should strive to achieve along with being relatable. First class 👍
I could watch this clip 100 times. It’s hysterical every time.
Ricky Gervais delivers every single time! There are people like this in the real world! Originality! Love it!
im tipping my hat
The genius that is Ricky Gervais. Amongst the comedy carnage, he writes and acts scenes so touching and sensitive.
This for me is the best thing Gervais has done. Hilarious but with a touching realness and tenderness. Its interesting as the main character hates life but seems to understand it better than anyone. Can’t wait for the new season.
That actress is genius for being able to keep a straight face like that
"I was bummed... By the ghost of Liberace"
I can honestly say that I've never heard that line before but it made me literally laugh out loud 🤣
Ricky seems to bring the best out people..great acting..wonderful cast, funny as f:&k and extremely touching!
Nice one Ricky walked us down this emotional street knocking on different doors until we end up blobbing. Cleverly done using scenarios out of real life on the edge as usual. Good balancing act to make someone laugh and cry in the same instant. Genius!
Over the last few months I've slowly become to realise, Ricky Gervais might just be one of the best comedy writers this country has ever produced. And that is some accolade.
Just realised the old lady was the actress from one foot in the grave, I used to love that, she's still funny.
and the plastic surgery women is Vicky from Derek :)
After life is a masterpiece in the "Human Condition". It's beautifully observed and heartwarming.
I love the way Ricky sticks with some of the same actors in all the stuff he's done ✔
".... it looks like a butcher's bin"
Hahahaha 😂😂😂😂
A rare talent to parody people whilst at the same time elevating them.
I wasn't expecting to be in tears by the end of that. That lady at the end was so sweet. And so sad. So lonely.
It makes you realise that we have one chance to appreciate those who care for you during our one life. It shouldn't be wasted because although we all disagree with our parents at some point, imagine the silent life if they weren't in it. That's why I'm going to be more patient from now on.
If you do fall out with your family, don't say anything that can't be unsaid. And even if you're annoyed, try to make peace. Because you don't want to leave it too late.
There's no righteousness in being stubborn.
Very sage words, Mike. 🙏
My father died suddenly in May of last year, and we'd not talked to one another for over a year, prior. He was a difficult man to know and I harder one to love but I still have my regrets, and I very much identify with what you've written.
And don't even go there with Mike & the Mechanic's The Living Years. I always wondered if that song would come back to haunt me. And they do.
@Jstbb Me Don't give up, they would want you to try your best to enjoy your life my friend.
Blah blah blah. I can’t wait to be alone and stick it up every single person I outlive.
I love the human side of Ricky in this character.
I started crying on seeing the Lady with the cat interview & Tony's gesture. The crying was so therapeutic, so beautiful
Why people love ricky is just the simple fact that he is humain , strait foward and we can relate to him !
His humour is quite subtle and smart. Hence ppl are divided 50/50 hating him or loving him)) people who can relate to him and understand his wit language sure do love him. It's a great test actually I put on my new acquaintances))) if person insist on Gervais being "dirty", "low", "depressing" and (my favourite!)) "obscene" I'm done with them))
I would not be able to keep a straight face; Afterlife is hilarious; good job on the gritty script and actors making light of touching stories.
The two series are absolutely brilliant I have watched both of them three times now. 😂
The old lady that's 100 in the care home...
I see Ricky Gervais like that when he's 100 🤣🤣🤣
"Take a picture". Makes me laugh each time I hear that, don't know why.
Yeah 🤣
This is such a great show. A bit like Derek in that it is hilarious, sad, and heartwarming at the same time, but better production. One of the best!
My heart melted for the last lady
This is such great writing .. The invisible problems that people have like loneliness, mental health, depression and he nails each one... Gervais wraps it in the currency of humour so he can slip it right under our noses... Brilliant. Now to get off our arses and get out there and help someone..
Love this! All of it, so beautifully written!
This series is fantastic and this scene in particular had me laughing out loud
Lol, Mrs Meldrew in the old folks home...... She never had those story lines in ‘one foot in the grave’ 🤣
The Old Lady in old folks home was Annette Crosby a brilliant actress classically trained .
That's how I'll be when I'm old probably 😂
I used to be a repair agent and I had dozens and dozens of elderly customers over the years who would just call my boss and say something was wrong with their television or VCR just so I would come around and have a coffee and a biscuit with them. Broke my fucking heart.
Annette Crosby is a legend
In amongst all of the vulgarity and recrimination that Tony feels, moments like the lady with the cat are truly brilliant and so sensitive. Whether you like Ricky Gervais or not, the fact remains that he is a genius.
That last scene has me in pieces every time I watch it. I still think series 2 of After Life is the best thing ever written and made on TV (even if it is satanic Netflix).
Annette Crosby is brilliant in this, such a difference from her time as Mrs Meldrew in one foot in the grave.

I'm not sure the British version of 'The Office' could ever be topped but this is in that league. Gervais creates shows that nobody else does - and on top of that he goes on awards shows and call out hypocritical celebrities !

Gervais is a natural born genius. He simply translates every day struggles into a kind or self absorbing irony.
The absurd positive to be taken away from a show based on human tragedy is that all of us can not only relate to it - we are in many ways a part of it.
