The warm weather starts around. Mid-March and the heat and humidity starts in April. You just have to make sure your well hydrated and don’t stay out for to long in the heat. I have gotten use to it, I run when the temperatures are high it doesn’t really bother me. It can take some time to get use to.

I became interested in the Homeschool movement about 15 years ago when I was still teaching in the public school system here in the Northeast. Because I was a therapist and had more flexibility in terms of how and what I taught, I found it easy to utilize resources to the advantage of my students. Science, history, language arts, literature...I had the best fun in my teaching career

I homeschool in Sacramento and I think you are right California is the best place to homeschool. Orange County is expensive to live in, but here in Sacramento we have an awesome homeschool community, lots of families, and it isn't as expensive as the Bay Area or LA. Also, there is a larger black community overall.

I would agree, California is a really great state to homeschool. Central California homeschooler here! Parent Choice, parent led options are great. We are part of a public Charter, home based hybrid. All teaching is parent led, parent choice. All that is required by this method is to submit work every month, with state testing twice a year. All work is accredited and are issued valid HS diplomas upon completion. Our charter is TK-12!

I was so fortunate that we started our homeschool journey while we were stationed in CA! We were able to try different curriculum, get all of our school supplies, take so many field trips, and we had a certified teacher that we checked in with. They even brought the standardized tests to us! The charter choice was the best way for us to begin, and even for me to build my confidence on homeschooling in general. We’re a military family, so we’ve moved out of state, and now live out of country. I still have curriculum and resources that are so useful to us five and six years later!

In Minnesota, we do not receive funds upfront, but as a state tax deduction. For each child before highschool, we receive $1625 credit per child, and once in highschool, we receive $2500 per child. No reimbursement is allowed for religious materials.
We do not have any oversight, either, outside of testing annually. We only submit a letter of intent to homeschool and that's it, unless your child tests in the 30th percentile or lower, then youust notify your local district for additional testing.

I was reading the comments below. The one regarding religion caught me. We shouldn't limit the children. Due to state and religion separation issues. Use the funding. Take extra time each (separate from the regular classes to teach your children. You can have prayer prior to and after school. Start the day with religious training. Aftetwards begin the regular school. There is always a way to overcome. My grandchildren are in a private religious school. They're taught Bible and school classes. Each subject is an hour block. Twelve years of one hour bibles classes five days a week; I would say your children would be well-rounded, educated Christians. I know my grandchildren are.

I have nursing help but at times when they call out and the agency is unable to find someone, I’m left alone to care for my son. It’s hard for me to lift and carry him because of his weight and height. He has an IEP and requires sped and other related services such as PT, OT, SLP, ABA and vision services. They don't give you the money though. My charter pays for things through a purchase order system. If I want a class, field trip, books, or supplies, I just open a PO and they order it for me with delivery to my house. I have total control. It is great.

Why do you advise people to take money from the state as a homeschooling family? HSLDA and many homeschool proponents clearly advise against accepting any money, because the government never gives you any $ without strings attached, such imposing regulations on homeschooling families, background checks on all household members, home visits, imposing mandatory testing, preventing gun ownership in home, although school shootings happen on school premises etc. We are absolutely refusing to take any money from the state if we homeschool. Please educate yourself first and don't advise people to accept money from the government that can result in outlawing homeschooling altogether.

There’s many reasons why Black people in the United States would want to live near other Black people. One example, since we have been represented in the media as dangerous or hyper sexualized, or unintelligent, people have biases. Those biases leak down to their children. So we wouldn’t want our children to only come in contact with people who have biases against them. We would want them to be able to see other people who have their same skin tone and hair type, see that there’s nothing wrong with those people, and know that what society is telling them is wrong. when our holidays come up, we want to be able to celebrate them. people also may want to live someplace where they can get food and groceries from their culture. for example, I have to drive 45 minutes to buy certain things we need to take care of our hair. as we have been marginalized, we also like to spend money in our own community, to strengthen it, instead of having our money go outside of the community. so it’s not just about getting along with people.

By state law you have to sign agreeing that you will not teach your child about “religious” content. You can obviously talk about religions as a subject. But you cannot, for example, as a Christian use Christian curriculum. That would be against the law. And since you sign an agreement, should your homeschool be audited you could be fined, not sure about imprisonment. 🤷🏽‍♀️

No, I didn't sign anything. And you can definitely use Christian Curriculum, as the thousands of christian private schools do.

@@AkeebaMaze Christian private schools and public school charter schools are 2 different things. Private schools can use whatever they please. It is illegal to use public funds, aka stipends to teach religious curriculum through a charter school. Yes, you sign upon signing your children up.

@@AkeebaMaze I have heard conflicting reports about what the California Constitution says about Christian training within the charter schools.
Article IX, Section 8, of the California Constitution addresses religious instruction within public schools. The wording is straightforward and is available at any public library. A review of this section may be helpful:
"No public money shall ever be appropriated for the support of any sectarian or denominational school..." Government funding cannot be used to support a religious school.
"...or any school not under the exclusive control of the officers of the public schools..." A charter school may delegate responsibility (1) for children's education to the parents, but it cannot by law relinquish final authority (2) because the California Constitution requires its officers to have "exclusive control (3)." In contrast, private home educators retain both responsibility and authority over every aspect of their children's education. As stated above, this is a fundamental difference between private home schoolers and charter school or public school ISP members.
"...nor shall any sectarian or denominational doctrine be taught..." Whether the parents are considered teachers, aides, volunteers, or some other title, the public school cannot allow them to teach religious doctrine within the program.
"...or instruction thereon be permitted..." This is a critical phrase. A school administrator or staff member cannot permit a volunteer or even a student to take over the class for even five minutes to teach Bible-based doctrine. Not only is it illegal for a public school teacher to teach religious doctrine, but it is also illegal for a public school administrator to permit religious instruction to be received by a pupil during the time he is in the school or program.
"...directly or indirectly..." This should clear up any possible misunderstanding of the previous wording by those who would allow a teacher to indirectly permit religious training.
"...in any of the common schools of the state." Current law [EC 47612(b)] makes it crystal clear that Article IX, Section 8 of the California Constitution includes charter schools. The legal term "common schools" as used in the California Constitution is synonymous with the term "public schools" as used in the California Education Code. AB 544 (passed into law in 1998) clarifies this further for laymen who have questions about this issue. It adds EC 47615(a)(1)&(2), which state "Charter schools are part of the Public School System, as defined in Article IX of the California Constitution. Charter schools are under the jurisdiction of the Public School system and the exclusive control of the officers of the public schools, as provided in this part."

Not teaching your kid about main religions is how you teach bigotry. Just as bad, when they are gaslight over religion they will have no words to debate because they are not educated or confident on the subject.

@@calisingh7978 We opt for a a PSA because I will teach my children our faith and the Bible commands us to teach our children about Him day and night. There was no way for me to clock out of educating them from a faith based perspective. Our “religion” isn’t a mere subject. It’s our life.
I don’t care how much money CA offers me I’m not taking the bait. We were about to sign up about 7 ish years ago because our Christian friend was a teacher working for one of the charters and then she mentioned how if i had any mention of God on a piece of work I would have to cut out that section … if I wanted to submit it as a sample for whatever subject she needed that month.
      I said nope. I’m out.
There’s lots of Christian teachers working for charter schools that’ll tell parents, “it’s cool, don’t worry, I got you.” Little do the parents realize, should their homeschool be audited, they will have to answer for themselves.
