  • Hewing a 6"X6" timber from a Bigtooth Poplar log (Populus grandidenta). Once again using the Harbor Freight "Pittsburgh" brand 3.5# axe that I've used for all of the 2020 Axe Cordwood Challenge.

Twisted logs can be a challenge 😁 The key to get a good result is changing the direction you're working in when crossing the centerline of the log. In this particular case, the way you are set up, you should try working left handedly when above the centerline and right handedly when below. Try it 👍

Thanks. I always enjoy a good hewing video. Personally I really like the character of rough hewn timber.

Awesome job! Quaking + Bigtooth Aspen is an underated timber ( at least when the core is not infected ). I've used them in the timber frame of my workshop.( I'll add that I char the Aspen if exposed to indirect elements then soak the endgrain with pine/birch tar and linseed oil, approx. 1.5L to 2L per beam endgrain, if that makes sense at all! )

How was the temper on the cheap head? Did it sharpen well...stay sharp?

The temper is on the hard side for the one I have. It is very hard to hand file. It wouldn't surprise me if the tempering and hardness varied a lot from axe to axe on these since they are made so cheaply and I cannot expect the metalurgy and quality control are very tight.
