It used to take this route years ago. Cool to see it!

The nice thing about taking the train is one can sit back and enjoy the trip but when driving on the freeway one MUST pay constant attention to their driving. One mistake can be very fatal.

That was a pretty cool thing to watch, Peter. I thought for a moment you were going to jump on the train yourself.

To note, until 1993 the Southwest Chief and earlier transcontinental Santa Fe Passenger trains used this route via Pasadena vs. the current Fullerton Route

This is the former Pacific Electric, later Southern Pacific State Street route, now operated by Metrolink. The Santa Fe Second District, later the Pasadena Subdivision, ran down the 210 freeway.

Thanks for the clarification of the routing, running down the middle of a freeway I assumed it was the old Santa Fe, now Metrolink Route.
So much for Chicago kid pretending to know something in Southern California.

The Metro Gold Line now uses the Santa Fe routing through Pasadena, down the 210 and currently as far east as Azuza (to be extended further east.) To add to the fun, Metrolink uses what used to be part of the Santa Fe Second District east of Pomona, which I believe they still call the Pasadena Subdivision (even though it doesn't go there anymore.) Once upon a time in the 1980s, both the 10 and the 210 freeways hosted Superliner-equipped trains: Sunset Limited sometimes on the 10, and Southwest Chief daily on the 210. (Desert Wind would also be found on the 210...can't remember the exact reroute date, was in 1985 or 1986.)

When I took the Sunset in 2004, we ran down the middle of the 10. I remember riding the SW Chief through Pasadena, and going down the middle of the 210 back in 1990. DW was rerouted through Fullerton in 1986.

It must suck driving the other direction down the freeway with train lights right to the face.

When it was diverted in October, it went from LA directly to San Bernardino.

Thanks. I figured that might be what they would do. I know we stopped in Fullerton, then Riverside and then San Bernardino when we went out in September.

A metrolink line does is everyday. But when the Amtrak does it it has to skip 2 stops.
