- Word Mapping, is the process of linking phonemes to graphemes and is an excellent instructional strategy that allows students to focus on phonemes in words and align them to speech sounds. This process will allow students to cement the spelling of words they practice, and anchor them in their brains as accurate letter sequences, which in turn will allow the words to be added into their orthographic lexicon (their sight vocabulary).
In this video we are going to focus on Word Mapping high frequency words and phonics-focused words. This instructional practice aligns with the research behind the Science of Reading and is extremely easy to do with your students in either small groups or whole group as well.
So, are you ready to implement Word Mapping into your instructional practices to align with the Science of Reading? If so, this Word Mapping video is for you!
This is a great strategy for mapping heart words and mapping sight words as well!

I LOVE THIS VIDEO! So clear and concise!
Anna DiGilio, you are wonderful for breaking apart the methods of teaching reading into digestible parts for us and also making it fun to teach.
I love your channel!!! ❤😊
I can't wait to discover more materials! Thank you!
Love it! Explains the concept so well! Thank you for making this video. :)
Just bought the Map it paddles! They are everything I hoped they would be. ❤💫I am so excited to use them with my students!🤩
This is great! Thanks for the video...I am excited to implement heart words instruction this year!
Wow, this is groundbreaking for me as a teacher! I have always believed most sight words were “sound-out-able”, in spite of what anyone said! It is because I remember when I was a new reader, I really was sounding out the words they said were sight words! Sounding them out always helped me to learn them! And it’s not as if the phonetics in the words didn’t make sense! Rather, they DID make sense phonetically! 😊
You are right on target! I love the paddles!
This video was amazing!!! Thank you for your explanations!!!
Thank you very much for sharing this. I like how you use the words phoneme grapheme as part of your deliberate act of teaching this technique. smiles from down under.😀👌💐
This was a wonderful, practical demonstration
You make my day Anna, thank you so much. Love it. from Malaysia

I love your videos! We have started going toward Science of Reading but are clueless as to what assessment to use... We were told FnP and Literably are not compatible with SoR. What do you use?
Great video! This makes so much sense! Thank you! I just ordered some of the paddles. I was wondering if you will be selling some replacement magnetic circles? I'm sure you are well aware that these will need to be replaced in time.
Thanks for the video. Where can I find the 109 word chart?
