Forgot to specify: I am wearing my Vives on my ankles, and not on my feet!
Since many people are mentioning the Vives’ jitter, let me address that.
It does not actually matter. Remote players in VRChat see a smoothed-out version of your FBT. If you wanna record anything locally, you can use OVRSmoothTracking, but I don’t use it there since I never used it myself, and I doubt most people use it either.
@@Erimelowo wich IMU are you using?
@@monikah.g1918 official trackers, so BNO085
Slimes definitely have a more natural movement feel to them, and a lot less jitter than the Vive 3.0, its very impressive and im so proud of SlimeVR for coming all this way.
Edit: really didnt want to start any arguments, just wanted to compliment the SlimeVR team for something that i objectively like.
@user-gi2ld6fc5t have you watched the video mate?
Don't read too much into the jitter seen in this video. I don't get that with my own Vive 3.0's, and it could be caused by less than ideal setup. Really the takeaway here is that they're virtually identical. Both are performing near perfect. Which is an impressive improvement for Slime.
@@SargonDragon I appreciate you for actually replying with useful information unlike the other guy ❤️
@SargonDragon this dude probably used straps for the vives, I tie mine into my shoe lace and it's buttery smooth no jitters when you hop like the straps
@@SargonDragon deffinitevly not ''identical'' in practice.
If you play PCVR with a standalone headset such as myself, you'd also need to factor in the cost of the base stations required to track the Vive pucks, which would be $300 for 2 if we're talking about the ones that come with the Index. This just further sweetens the deal with SlimeVR which looks nigh indistinguishable from the traditional trackers in this video. Really excited to receive mine within the next few months hopefully!
I ordered mine last august, 7+3 set , they say it should ship for July 14th but we shall see
The $150 Basestations from Valve are perpetually out of stock. Usually you have to get the $200 Basestations from Vive (which are the same unit, just more expensive).
You also have to deal with 3rd party software (Playspace Calibrator) when mixing Basestation tracking with something like Quest 2, and calibration will drift and need to be recalibrated again periodically.
This is one of the reasons why the 4 year old Index remains popular, especially for VRChat. FBT is hassle free and relatively less expensive to add. But for those using Quest 2, SlimeVR is becoming an increasingly viable alternative.
@@RandomPlayer717has it arrived?
So how's it going?
A friend I met on VRChat recently uses SlimeVR for FBT, and I didn't even realize it until he told me. I was pretty surprised because for previous people I've met with SlimeVR I could easily tell the tracking quality was not great. I could tell they were using SlimeVR by just watching them. Much like I could easily spot someone using Kinect.
SlimeVR has clearly made significant advances recently. Where I did not consider it a serious competitor to Vive 3.0 trackers before, now I'd say it is. At least in terms of tracking performance in practical usage (as shown in this video).
However, the system does seem to be considerably more fiddly for the user. My Vive 3.0 trackers always just work and are rock stable and don't require periodic calibration or other fiddling. While my friend has to take timeout every so often to fiddle with some issue or other with his SlimeVR.
My impression is that SlimeVR is a viable option for tinkerer types, but probably not so much for less technically savvy people. It's a considerably less expensive option that offers good performance if you're willing and able to deal with the technical effort of getting it working and keeping it working.
Our current development goals are mainly increasing user friendliness and QOL, and thus decreasing fiddling. Obviously it won't ever be as great as Vive's "strap them on and you're done", but we're aiming for a simpler and easier experience.
Now we need Thrillseekere to revisit this and get his mind blown.
for REAL
This is insane, IMU tracking with just two extra points of reference has already overtaken base station tracking in its smoothness and natural quality. I can’t wait to get my set in
Just add smooth tracking to vive and all the jitter goes away. Looks much better. Been using it for years
Have you gotton your set yet? 😂
@@underflip2 how?

Almost indistinguishable from each other! The only way I can tell them apart is by the way the Vives jiggle.
If you use smooth tracking that goes away completely

I cannot wait to get mine in. That tracking is looking real good, far better than my current HaritoraX.
so slimes are pretty comparable but cheaper and work under a blanket?
can't wait for the assembly to finally finish!
this is insane man I almost like the look of the slime tracking more
Wow that is impressive, in some areas (eg. when lying down) the slime tracked better and smoother than the vives. Amazing job on everything!
Holy shit!! Thats so good, wish my tracking was this good xd.
My hope is the best of both worlds...I have 3 vive v3s, and im gonna use slime as extra trackers for knees/elbows for extra fidelity without heavier trackers being awkward
If you care about aditional tracking points, yes, that's a great option ^^
you might as well use tundra at this point

Damn, really hard to decide! They're both equally cute!
waiting for that one thank you erimel
Looks like slime will be great! Its just... I swear every time it gets near the "estimated to ship" date another month delay.
Amazing work. A friend built me a set last week and i'm kind of shocked at how good they are, especially considering they can track while in under a blanket. Probably the only thing i'd want more is to have a full reset mode that can be done lying down. (though yaw reset works well enough haha)
Hi would there be a way I could commission your friend to make those for me?
@@ShonenVR ill check if they have a page or something you can dm
This is fuckin awesome. Slimes are clean!! And i cant wait for mine to come in
Hold up, let’s be realistic- Vive is not $390. You need two base stations. More like $620. And you can build a set of slimes even cheaper! Excellent comparison video though 😁
but if you already bought an index you have them already.
Ordered slimeVR as i intend to pickjp the quest 3 on launch and attenpt to go full wireless setup, my current vive pro 2 + knuckles + vive trackers work fine i guess but base stations for me i always get unlucky run into issues
You should make a video using smooth tracking with both different tracker to see which is better
Agree. Smooth tracking does wonders. Been using it for a long time and it’s like night and day
As expected, the open source SlimeVR tracking software has gotten improvements and therefore making the tracking even better than before for less, I'm definitely chucking bucks for the full body set
build my slimeVR for 120$AUD total (80USD), and vive tracker x3 with 2 station is about 1000$ minimum here
700
i prefer slime, having the chest position mapped means you can add a tracker to it making the torso more precise
Amazing ! I love you fox boy owo ❤️❤️
It can take some fiddling with tracker placement, calibration, and bone sizing. Once that is done though it can be nearly indistinguishable from vive trackers (unless your wifi sucks than latency kills tracking). occasional yaw resets which just require you to look forward and tap one of your trackers will fix any drift 99% of the time, and if it doesn't a full reset isn't hard, in my experience so far a full reset only needs to be done every two to three hours depending on what I do,
Guys, I have both vive trackers and slimes, slimes are really good at the moment, and have a huge prospect on an equal footing with vives, in terms of tracking quality, if we talk about the number of dots and the BNO chip, they are not inferior, but in my personal opinion, vives like an iPhone never have problems with them, they will work all the required hours without failures, with slimes, although there are rarely interruptions, it's up to you
Slime Vr is looking quite fascinating tbh the avatar is mostly moving at the exact same speed as your body would in real time or real life per-say while Vive its a bit of a delay in about 1-2 seconds but to me I think we have a clear winner here folk’s that Slime Vr takes Vr technology to a new level 😮💨👍🏽✨
The only problem with the SLimeVR is that they inveitably drift by the nature of the tech... some people dont mind recalibrating every 10 minutes, but for others its an immersion killer... Especially as you notice the drift get worse with each minute until you frustratingly give in, pause the game, and recalibrate...
recalibrating Slime trackers only requires you to stand still and tap one of the trackers a few times, similar to the Quest 2's double tap passthrough.
The official trackers are more every 40 minutes, and mag or dynamic drift compensation can further increase this time
@@Erimelowo can you use more than 6 slime trackers ? 12-13?
Yes, up to 10 is the max I think, but in theory you could add even more probably@@123OGNIAN
@@123OGNIAN Yes you can, the most i have seen was 35 trackers. Most games do not support that though and there is a point of diminishing returns. It could be used for motion capture though in software like blender for animation.
Quick question, does slime vr work on quest 2 stand-alone? (I’m fine with using a laptop on the side to run things if needed, just wondering if it works on the quest 2 vrchat app since my laptop struggles to run the game)
Yes it works!
I have been researching these two types of trackers. And I think I’m going to go with the Slim tracker. because of the price to performance. and I don’t have to have the base stations on the wall, which is aesthetically more pleasing.
any thoughts on this or do you guys agree?
I have question! How is the stability between these two? Like If you play one hour (semi active walking/chatting), how many times you need to reset the trackers or calibrate them? ^^
approximately once every 40 minutes to an hour, but instead of having to get up from being comfortable to completely recalibrate there’s a button you can click that puts you right back where you were to begin with and gets rid of the drift without you having to get up like i said so in my opinion the drift isn’t a huge problem anymore with that factor
The Vive 3.0's are completely stable. They will never drift.
This is a significant advantage in actual practical use. The Vive 3.0's just work and don't require periodic fiddling during use.
I'm just wondering how does the tracker extension work? I haven't been able to find an explanation yet.
They act like trackers but are connected to another tracker. Here's a full explanation: docs.slimevr.dev/slimevr101.html#what-is-an-extension
i just refund my money from slime to get the Vive 3.0 i needed this video thank u
I know you wanted a more "raw" comparison but if you have any vive tracker up to the 4.0 (currently unreleased yet) you can lose most to all of jittering with a program that smooths out the movement with keeping the accuracy!!!
I'm honestly considering getting the slimevr trackers. They look seriously good for the price. I'd go so far as to say they might be a bit underpriced lol
i just got my vive tracker today but i feel like its not enough cuz i seen my friend have better tracking than mine
i wonder if its possible to use more than 3 tracker?
You can use more trackers with vive. Up to 7 I think but there’s also smooth tracking either built into vrchat or ovr smooth tracking (which is even better) and all jitters go away. It’s awesome
Is this just the lower body set without the strap?
What monitor nd pc do i need im a questie
slimevr is litterally the best fbt i've seen
the movement is so clean
Anyone using it in game seems to have issues. All of the videos are cherry picked, slime is cool but if you plan on doing more than just sitting I'd pass on them
@@Fish_Nexus Erimel have the official dev tracker. 99.99% of slime users have a DIY tracker with a cheap IMU. Most software-side problem have been fixed. TBH i seems to have more problems calibrating my vive trackers with my q2 than with my slimes
@@Fish_Nexus Many people try to go as cheap as possible which effects the quality of tracking. Even I didn't want to spend the cost on the top level imu so I went one step down in quality making mine. Havent had any issues yet besides yaw resets every 20 or so minutes which is just looking forward and tapping a tracker, and a full reset every two to three hours which is the same as the yaw reset but I have to standup.
@@ShendonZ I completly agree with this. I tried a friends setup with vives and they suffered from the playspaces drifting which was far harder to fix than the slimevr drifting.
how on gods green earth did you get your proportions calibrated so well?
What settings are you using on the Slimes?
Defaults but with foot plant and toe snap enabled.
Using Chest, Waist, Knees and Feet SteamVR trackers.
And ofc calibrated proportions.
Considering that slime is far cheaper i'm surprised that it does seem a lot less jittery when doing quick movements
Only problem is everytime the slimevr be pushing back the shipping date
Very good. IMU tracking has become heavily associated with 'foot skate'. If this level of quality can be widely reproduced, this should do well to curb that expectation.
interesting, my slime vr is nowhere this good. Maybe you could make a video on how to set it up correctly? All videos i've seen were only showing how to do a automatic configuration, and apparently this is not enough for me :/
I would start by recommending you to update your server to 0.8.0 (latest) -> https:slimevr.dev/download , then go through the Setup Wizard again (it improved since 0.7.1 and before)
does it still have the ''kneed spred'' issue when you sit down or do you just sit wider with slimes ?
the slimes have knee trackers so that would be closer to the actual position of the knees.
@@norsehawk it should be like that in theory. i guess you will see once you get slime.
@@griper00 it stands to reason that when you have Hip, Ankle AND Knee trackers, it's going to be more accurate than if you have just Hip and Ankle trackers when it comes to the knees.
@@norsehawk but do you know how the trackers work ? you need all the points to constuct some of a humanoid rig that then emulates the steam vr trackers. dont imagine it like 5 6dof trackers.
@@griper00 On a simple level the software takes rotation data from the tracker and uses math to calculate position between trackers. For just ankle and hip trackers it is missing info on the rotation of the upper leg to the hip so it guesses. Once you add the upper leg trackers it allows it to know where the knees are if you have it calibrated right which isn't hard and only needs to be done once.
Is there somewhere to buy prebuilt slime trackers?
slimevr.dev
I have a feeling that my Slimes have poor factory calibration. It's all BNO085 IMUs and I have no idea how to do it.
Recently I am studying slimevr. you are using bno085IMU,so try to set your bones as accurately as possible, and then you will get unexpected effects.
Slime way better the way it tracks without base stations or anything and it runs smoothly
what kind of slimevr trackers are you using? i dont think haritora looks this good
The official ones (dev kit)
Idk how the hell you got it to look that good, I’m using the 5+1 kit and I must be doing so many things wrong
For that level of tracking it takes a good while of messing with calibration, settings bone sizes, and tracker placement. zrock has a good guide on setting stuff up to get a good baseline than people spend a while tweaking it.
I want to get slime vr but idk where to get them from
For the officials they are available on Crowd Source, for ones other people have made there is a marketplace on the discord for commissions.
I feel like they're about the same, but here's what I think the main difference is. Vive trackers are quicker it seems with movements, yet that can cause less actual quality, causing them to actually look a bit more jittery than the slime VR trackers, both I think are great choices, but for quest no question about it, Slime is the way to go'
I am aurprised how good the vive is with only 3 trackers…
5+1 set comes with 3 trackers?
5+1 comes with 5 trackers plus an extension. That will do ankles, knees/upper leg , chest, and the extension goes to the hip. The vive is only three which is ankles and hip.
SlimeVR really out here being a hero for cheaper fbt that works just as good or better than vive.
