Took over 16 hours of single frame shooting to do the parts he appeared in and won 9 awards at the 87 MTV VMAs, a record that still stands. The flute is actually a Fairlight synthesizer.
WOW
@@joannparker1977 Actually, it's an EMU Emulator II, the same model that Genesis' Tony Banks used at the time. The preset sound is called "Shakuhachi". Genesis used the same sound at the very beginning of the song "Domino part 1".
Now you have to do Big Time and Steam to complete the vid trio.
Peter Gabriel, one of the most influential artists ever. This video was groundbreaking at the time too.
Peter Gabriel is one of the most creative artists in rock, from his early Genisis days through to his solo work, you should check out his live work especially from either Secret World or Growing Up tours other great Peter Gabriel song include, Sky Blue, In Your Eyes, Solsbury Hill, Here Comes The Flood, Games Without Frontiers, Growing Up and the incredibly emotional Biko based on true events all so good
Add Shock The Monkey to that list.
@@MusicFan1977 another classic for sure, there are so many I could not name them all, I missed out Red Rain, Moribund The Burgermeister, Digging In The Dirt, Mercy Street I don't think he released a bad song.
@@simply_psi I remember that early after Sledgehammer comes Steam and Big Time with impressive Videos đ
Regards from Chile :-) We love Peter because he came to the Amnesty International concert. Also add Don't Give up.
@@tomasgonzalezmarin6118 I had forgotten about both those, they were both up beat, similar style to Sledgehammer, and I think all three were from the So album, I seem to remember Big Time had a bit double meaning ending "with the bulge of my big, big, big" I think he was referring to his wallet as the song was about success and making it big, but a lot of people thought it was something very different đ
GenEsis
It's 1986 and the whole So album is great.
An absolute master piece. Regards from Chile.
Masterpiece. The whole thing, start to finish.
Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes", my favorite, was made famous in the movie "Say Anything" when John Cusack holds up the boom box outside his girls house with the song playing to win her back. Iconic scene in film! đœâ€â
As far as post-Genesis Peter Gabriel really like "In Your Eyes" as well. Nice arrangement.
@@ShanntahnPininchula The live Concert video version of that song with Paula Cole is worth showing on this channel. WOW. It is the best.
@@JTHeidrick I will have to check it out! Thanks much!
The duet between Peter & Kate Bush is one of the gorgeous, meaningful, heartfelt songs ever. "Don't Give Up". Amazing video †The hopefulness is similar to REM "Everybody Hurts". Two songs that helped many people.
She also did the backing vocals to Games without Frontiers
Yes! Please do a video listening to this.
Shuf shuf
This is a BLAST FROM THE PAST. I remember seeing this on MTV back in 1986. It won a ton of awards at the MTV award show that year.
Enjoyed, I suggest âShock the monkeyâ, âGames without frontiersâ , âIn your eyesâ, and âDonât give upâ. by Peter Gabriel.
I remember very well when this first came out, it was hugely popular, especially the video since it was revolutionary at the time. Everyone in the dance clubs would stop just to watch it! I think it still has a groove.
I was a kid 40 years ago.
This was the ultimate song and video.
It still rings today as awesome.
It's good to see that you two appreciate it today. đ
Peter Gabriel was Genesis before Phil Collins.
Try Solsbury Hill. Thank you Guys
Yeah, Peter Gabriel was the original singer in GENESIS. He left the band and Phil Collins took over. He has a lot of very interesting music. He got really popular and had several big hits. He knows what heâs doing. That video was pre-computer digital technology. It was state of the art at the time. I believe he won awards for this.
Any of his songs the people in the comments are recommending are worth checking out. Good stuff.
From Peter Gabriel's same killer 1986 album called "So," I think you'd also really like the cool song "In Your Eyes" and his hauntingly beautiful duet with Kate Bush called "Don't Give Up."
The bar this video set is so high, nothing has ever or will ever approach it. Iconic.
Now you need to do 'In your eyes'. One of the best love songs ever written. Pay attention to the lyrics
The "So" LP yielded many great songs of that MTV era. This LP was co produced by Daniel Lanois who produced many great musical artists (Bob Dylan, Robbie Robertson, Neil Young, Willie Nelson, etc.) and co produced (with Brian Eno)2 award winning LPs by U2. Daniel Lanois is also a performer as well as producing.(Black Dub is his band's name) Peter Gabriel's alternative Rock/Pop credentials are well known by many. Cheers Guys.
Love me Some Peter Gabriel!!!! Love the song!!!!! "Shock The Monkey" by Peter Gabriel!!!! FIRE!!!
Let It Be(The Soundtrack) by The Beatles is No.4 on the Billboard Charts this week!!!!! Check it out!!!!!
One of the great dance - club songs of the '80s. The video set new standards for music videos of the time. Unfortunately it was played so frequently on MTV that they ran it and the song into the ground. Peter Gabriel is of course the original lead singer for Genesis before Phil Collins took over at his departure. Check out the much darker "Games Without Frontiers", and "Mercy Street" by him.
I saw Peter Gabriel and his astonishing colleagues when he did the WOMAD (World of Music and Dance) festival. He brought artists (music and dance, visual and culinary - great food) from all over the world, from flautists from China to Youssou N'Dour to us in Columbus Ohio. It was the single most amazing musical experience of my life. And I saw Frank Sinatra live.
Some of those '80's videos were works of art. Alot of effort and creativity went into them.
This was such a great tune when this first came out. Very popular in pop and rock genres. Video is excellent
Two GREAT songs from Peter; In Your Eyes (The live version is amazing) and When Youâre Falling, a collaboration with Afro-Celt Sound System (do the live performance) He did allot of work with African and Middle Eastern musiciansâŠ..an interest similar to Page and Plant, and incorporated into his later music
How jealous I am as youâre going to experience genius with all the tracks youâre about to find. The manâs one of the greats
From the same CD: Mercy Street, Donât Give Up, Big Time, and In Your Eyes. Simply sensational. There was a a reason this album (So) went Platinum.
To me, the video has the âmiddle partâ which is most part of the video really, it has animations that fit the lyrics.
The start and the end of it shows how we are life, energy. The video starts with stars, which mostly everything we know is made from, time then skips ahead to when we are born, and once we get old, we get tired and die, sit on the sofa like he does, and return to stardust.
Peter Gabriel is one of my all time favorites. His genius lies largely in his ability to write a song that grabs you with a very simple composition.
Songs I recommend: Shock The Monkey, Big Time, Solsbury Hill (which is a perfect example of simplicity that just works), Digging In The Dirt, Growing Up, Downside Up (definitely watch the video for that song), Mercy Street.
This video won every award there was to give... Peter Gabriel is one of the great artists of the last 50 years...
This video won MTV award for best video of year âŠâŠ.1986 I think
The greats Manu Katche on drum and Tony Levin on bass take this classic to the next level.
Love the reaction guys, Gabriel in your eyes, secret world tour live, amazing. đđđđđŽó §ó ąó łó Łó Žó ż
I've heard this song - real 1980s feel, very imaginative and very clever video. I really like this song, I do remember it and I think it's from 1986. Peter Gabriel was the original lead singer with Genesis and he left them in 1975, Phil Collins then taking over. According to Google, this song, Sledgehammer, won nine MTV awards at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards and it certainly deserved it. Thanks so much for your reaction, guys, really enjoyed it as always. And yes, I do agree that with a title like Sledgehammer, you would think the song would be metal or extra heavy!
My favorite artist of all time. Great talent. live concerts on DVD are a must and ALL his albums and All Early Genesis albums.
I love this song. Every reaction vid I come across, I watch. Awesome that you guys appreciate the video and graphics/visuals. If I'm not mistaken this song and music videos is from the 80s. This music video was groundbreaking for the time.
Peter Gabriel used to be the lead singer of Genesis. His stuff never disappoints!
Peter Gabriel's song In Your Eyes (Secret World Live) is a must see. You'll love it!! â„ïžđ„
What a great artist! I assume you know that Peter Gabriel is one of the pioneers of progressive rock, past member of the Genesis group. You cannot miss the song Biko from him, but you also have to search and read about Biko history before reacting
Peter Gabriel is fantastic! My favorite of his would probably be Games Without Frontiers. 2nd favorite & I hope you'll check out, is In Your Eyes (I strongly suggest listening to it from Secret World Live ... any song off there, actually!) I loved this reaction, as always!â„ïžââ„ïž
Imagine being in the 1980s when videos were just being invented. And this came out.....I was there. You guys got the right reaction.
In the 80's there was a brief obsession with making lavish videos. Artists and companies threw major cash at them in order to promote sales. This one used animatronics to draw people in- was a No:1 on the vid-charts for ages I remember.
You should react to some early Genesis, when Gabriel was the lead singer and Phil Collins was the drummer. Genesis - Dancing With The Moonlit Knight (Live '73) is a good one.
This is my jam! I remember when the song first came out back in the day I was sitting in my living room as a teenager watching MTV and video came on for the first time and I was like holy shit. This song is bad ass until this day, itâs still one of my favorite songs.
Peter Gabriel - "Solsbury Hill" is really good...!
The stop-motion animation was done by Aardman Studios, who went on to produce the Wallace and Gromit shorts/movie and Chicken Run.
I was 6 when this came out !! my older brother used to play it at full volume! Amazing tune and video!!! †it!! especially played at full volume!! đ
Great review. Peter Gabriel is a legend - Such brilliance and creativity is hard to come by. When I see this video I really miss the 80s.
one of the most influential musicvideos of all time.
Digging In The Dirt & Solsbury Hill by him are awesome!
This album was produced by Daniel Lanois, the least known of the world's brilliant producers (even though he's done tons of super huge albums). And the video was super famous, coming out at the inception of the absurdist period that was started by people like Steve Martin, Robin Williams and David Letterman and a few painters. This is the song a youthful rock star sings to groupies in the audience. It's like an invitation. So many bands have songs like this, that are essentially the singer discussing their sexual prowess. Led Zeppelin's is likely the most famous, but there are many other candidates, like this one.
Peter Gabriel the Creative genius right from the start with Genesis. George, Patrick I see you have only reacted to one Genesis song, there is so many songs for you to dive into with this band I suggest next reaction Firth of Fifth Live, an early creative piece, to light the fire in your soul. So many fans can't wait to hear the reaction to this epic masterpiece one of greatest pieces of music ever written!!
I was 19 In 1975 and wanted to go to a concert -- I went to see a band I never heard of called Genesis -- They were doing The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway tour --- I was mesmerized and transfixed by what I saw -- nearly 2 hours of continuous magical sound with not a pause for applause until the very end -- It was a journey of Progressive -- Avant Guarde -- and Performance Art that I had never been exposed to before --- I went straight away to my record store the next day and much to my surprise they had a lot of Genesis records already --- I bought them all LOL -- shortly after that Peter left the band -- thats another story --- I see that you have only reacted to one Genesis song with Phil Collins doing the vocals --- You must try a Peter Gabriel one soon -- I wish I could recommend a live performance but sadly the only videos I could find were soooo old looking and didnt do justice to the brilliant musicality of Genesis -- But it is also a shame because Peter acts out and preforms and puts on quite a show -- He can be a odd duck lol
Been asking the bro dudes for a while now to go down the genesis rabbit hole. There is a plethora of fantastic music to lose yourself in from genesis with Gabriel and Hackett still in the band.
Do you know Gabriel and Phil Collins were both in Genesis at the same time (Phil sang back-up!)? More Genesis. Peter, Phil and Genesis LOVED being ambiguous. And man, this video is all that. LOL
What a dirty song without knowing its a dirty song lol
Now you have to listen to " Big Time" or " Steam". Thank you
Loved that! I forgot how awesome that song is! Thanks for the reaction, guys!
Can you do a reaction for a song called, Nights in White Satin, by The Moody Blues? The long version. Thanks!
Hi Guys, Absolutely luv yr enthusiasm for seeking out ""great music "" if u haven't cum across MASSIVE ATTACK Yet ""IT IS @ MUST! Album is called massive attack main track is called ""PROTECTION"" Sang by Tracey thorn very unique voice, infact every track on tha' album is unique, And dare I say-it As innovative as pink Floyd and led Zeppelin for their time in tha' ""spotlight "" And of course they are @ London u.k. band, pls keep tha' video's coming Xxx.
Love them dancing chickens!
Classic 80's!
I remember that early after Sledgehammer comes Steam and Big Time with also impressive Videos đ
Regards from Chile :-) We love Peter because he came to the Amnesty International concert in 1990, just after the dictatorship. Think that, at that time, Peter Gabriel was a God of music.
So happy to see the young people getting into this old music,..the visual and animation,..was creative in the way it was used,.but an old school method,..Harryhausen,..stop-motion,..
used in original 1930's black and white King Kong movie,..they make the monster,..character move an inch,.(my crude explanation) a quarter of an inch,..film it,..then carry on with that process,..tideous,.takes hours just to get what ever it is to walk a few steps,..but look at that old movie,...how they had King Kong knocking planes out of the sky,..picking up cars and throwing them,..that process was used in probably hundreds if not thousands of movies,..from 1930's to the 80's?? You know,..nearly 60 years later,..but look at how it evolved,...more polished,..better coloring,..better camera lenses,..this is still shy a few years from cgi,..you gotta give it to the artists pre cgi,..the practical artists,..you got a look at that with the horror movies like Alien,.and I think you've seen The Thing,..plus American Werewolf in London,..you don't get an Oscar for makeup and special effects for nothing,..it's nothing to sneeze at,đ,.so happy you took an interest,..so love your discovering this,..80's had some impressive videos,..they became mini movies,..plots and everything,.and furthered film making,..groundbreaking innovation,..do keep going,..Godspeed, Peace â
You must hear âShock the Monkeyâ for something that will blow your mind.
Great artist and great video... aardman animation in Bristol. Gabriel is so creative musically and visually - he once went on stage wearing his wife's dress and a fox head (Genesus foxtrot album)
As others have mentioned his diet with Kate Bush is just beautiful
Oh wow, I didnât know they did this one. No wonder. Ha Ha!
MTV made all music super creative.... I want my MTVđđđ
Remember " Video Killed the Radio Star". lol Too bad MTV turned out the way it did.
Peter Gabriel did the soundtrack for the movie Last Temptation of Christ. It is utterly incredible. Thanks for this video.
Early MTV days. What a weird guy. Still living. I have this on what is called a 12" single.
Great song!
Blackfoot-Train Train!!
No doubt man! I actually saw them live twice. (Old)! Ha Ha!
Good Reaction, as usual Guys though our Brother on the right still closed his eyes and missed some of the visuals which made this one of the 2 most-watched videos in MYV history :)
The 80s were pretty cool with MTV videos!!
Hi Guys! React to INXS, Live Wembley 1991, New Sensation... Thanks!!!
Awesome artist and video!!! Welcome to the rabbit hole⊠Other gems are Red Rain, Games Without Frontiers, Biko, Big Time, Mercy Street, Solsbury Hill, Zaar, A Different Drum, Family Snapshot, Rhythmn of the Heat, The Book of Love, Jigalong, Time of the Turning (Reprise), Come Talk to Me, Secret World, Fourteen Black Paintings, In Your Eyes, Steam, When Youâre Falling, Shaking the Tree, Sky Blue, San Jacinto, Shock The Monkey, and so many more.
Do you guys know what this song is about? Sledgehammer? Fruitcake? Honeybee? Open up your fruitcake? Sweet fruitcake? The opening scene should have keyed you in. You guys should watch this live. Incredible!!!!
Oh let me be your sledgehammer
This will be my testimony
Show me round your fruitcage
'Cos I will be your honey bee
Open up your fruitcage
Where the fruit is as sweet as can be
Any song of the live show Secret World is amazing guys! Give it a try. « Come talk to me - Donât give up-Blood of Eden etc. »
Great reaction! Also please do Biko and Steam and Big Time! And Don't Give Up and Blood of Eden - be sure you do the video on Big Time, Don't Give Up, and Blood of Eden. All amazing by Peter Gabriel.
"Big Time" is even better!
You need to react to 100 best bands of all time
Peter Gabriel - Intruder.
It's about life and being a man specifically and doing your "job" with your "sledgehammer" (if you know you know) and then dying.
MTV videos used quality producers doing artists hit songs.
The only other Peter Gabriel tracks I rate are: Games Without Frontiers, Shock The Monkey, Solsbury Hill and Biko.
lol this song is all about layin that pipe bahahahaha
Hi, you had to react to that funky gem ! You should also react to another song from the same album, "In your eyes", Secret World live version, it's just fantastic.
You guys will love Killing Joke - Love Like Blood.
Check out his song Solsbury Hill. It's a great one.
Please react to Wolfmother - pyramid)
Love Sledgehammer but my favourite Peter G song is Red Rain. Would love to see you react to it. I
Ardmann animations...see: Wallace and Grommit
Great song
Please, please, please do John Mellancamp, live Market Square Arena, 1987 "Check it Out" is the song. John is a American Treasure.
His videos were great, but his live performances are just as good. Please check out "Steam " live.
đđđđđ
Dude, great reaction. But your Eagles t-shirt needs the rest of the band members on it. Specially, the guy who came up with the music and structure of Hotel California - Don Felder. Having Hotel California on your shirt without Felder is kind of sad. ;)
If you like that, check out Peter Gabriel's video for Big Time.
đâšđđŸ
You guys should do an INXS reaction. My favorite all-time song is "Elegantly Wasted". THANKS!!
Peter left the great band Genesis as singer when they found out Phil Collins could sing alsoâŠlittle ego there.
Come back to Gabriel and 'SHOCK THE MONKEY'.
Try "Big Time" another banger with a similar video :)
My suggestions for less poppy but awesome Peter Gabriel is:
San Jacinto
Solsbury Hill
Biko
If doing Biko, first read about South African anti-apartheid activist Stephen Biko, if you don't already know about him.
Please if possible react to the Genesis in the cage live medley 1984
Check out Steam and Big Time.
