It is very common for people to confuse BPD with NPD, but they’re very different disorders in many ways, but they do have some aspects that overlap and are similar. In this video we’re going to examine this to help you identify what’s what.
BPD is a disorder that includes a pattern of instability in interpersonal relationships, self-image, emotions, and marked impulsivity. NPD is a pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and lack of empathy. Let’s examine and break down the similarities, differences, and overlaps of BPD and NPD that tends to cause a lot of confusion when these traits are exhibited in individuals in your life.
Daniel J. Fox, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist in Texas, international speaker, and a multi-award winning author. He has been specializing in the treatment and assessment of individuals with personality disorders for over 15 years in the state and federal prison system, universities, and in private practice. Hi Doc, please look at the input gain of your microphone (whether it's a separate mic, or a built in one to your filming device). As it is currently, it's distorting your voice, very heavy metal, but perhaps not conducive to ease of listening, and reaching a wider audience. Thank you for all you do!

@@Signal_light_instructor you are, of course, entitled to your opinion. I’m personally extremely grateful for Dr. Fox’s informative content, and imagine he (as many CZcams creators) is doing what he can with what he has.
Absent positive and constructive feedback, however, this issue is likely to continue and may perhaps prevent others who need this info from hearing it because the audio is harsh and distorted (which can actually be physically painful, for some sensitive folks).

Im honestly not sure that i feel a fear of abandonment as much as im afraid of not relating to others because of having lived a life without any family at all and also because of inequity. But there are a couple of hobbies that i like to connect with others with. However, those sorts of meetups generate high turn over come and go people. :/ The rest of my hobbies are all independent activities. So to answer your question, id say maybe both. However, i enjoy being alone and need alot of time alone. My freedom is important to me. But i would like to ideally have a handful of long lasting friends. Its hard at my age and position though. Thank you, Dr. Fox, for addressing this with clarity and scientific knowledge of psychology and psychiatry. Many people don't understand or recognize these differences and similarities. More dangerously, some who claim a dose of authority on the subject, state that BPD doesn't exist, and that people with BPD actually simply have NPD.
From my (anecdotal) experience, both personal and impersonal (readings, studies, videos), people with BPD have compassion, and feel guilt more adequately. When they harm others, they try to fix and make reparations. They stop being abusive to others if that's pointed out to them. They will even be overly and sincerely apologetic. People with NPD? No way. It's not their fault, not their problem. They blame others for everything that goes wrong. They continue abuse until the abused people or law/higher authority figures stop them. They only cooperate when caught and when their way doesn't work.
So thank you again, for all those affected by both disorders, including themselves.

This such a easy understandable way to understand NPD and BPD. I thought I was
BPD. I like to be a severe hermit. I can put up with a lot. Than when I am used and
used I go into Rage burst. It takes alot though. And it is floodgates open. Than I
feel bad. But I do not really care if I loose people because of that. I have been known
to be alone for 6 months at a time. So confusing. I think my co-dependence makes
it so I do not mind being alone. I do not attack people verbally when I rage I attack
the situation. But it is severe. I am better through Dr. Fox videos than I used to be.

I liked the emphasis on separating the pathology of attention-seeking from the terminology of ‘entitlement’. People with BPD become desperate for attention bc deep down a lot of us are absolutely certain we do not deserve it, & if we do get it we are certain we will eventually lose it. We don’t desperately seek attention bc we think we are better than everyone & the center of the spotlight, it’s because the emotional permanence factor with us is incredibly poor. We catastrophize & see abandonment where it isn’t when we haven’t learned to sit with our feelings, when we haven’t learned how to self-value over finding our value in others, & when we haven’t learned to ask ourselves questions before lashing out bc we feel alone.

Love pretty much everything you post I love how you do distinguish difference’s in issues regarding empathy in npd and bpd. Another thing I did realise with entitlement, is I behave badly with my partner and when there is a threat to leave I am either internalising or verbalising a sense of entitlement to a relationship with him. But you are so right, it doesn’t stem from a sense of superiority, it stems from being taught ‘unconditional love’ to an unhealthy extreme. My dad was violent towards my mum and cheated on her, my mum stuck by just like all women on both my parents sides. I also stayed with previous abusive partners, so when my now healthy partner tries to implement boundaries or has attempted to follow through with leaving as he said he would if I was abusive, in the moment I can not logically/emotionally understand it, but with time the logic like this comes but still conflicted on it emotionally. I think of when I stayed or my mum did etc. thank you for your content/work book, because it has helped realise these kind of things.

I have a young lady in my life that’s been like a daughter to me that has BPD. It’s always an emotional roller coaster. She had an explosive verbal outburst toward me, blocked me on all social media and told me she’ll never let me back into her life again. I now see all the reasons why the timing of the minor comment I made got so blow out of proportion by her. The jealousy of other relationships in my life, fear of me abandoning her like so many others have, putting me out of sight out of mind to protect her emotions, all the things. Do you have any advice on how I should move forward? Does she need space to heal or does she need me to find ways to try to reconnect and reassure her I won’t leave her? The explosion and her venting on me hurt. Ultimately I get it and with the help of your videos know the place of pain it comes from but know there needs to be boundaries too.

I know this 3 months old but for me personally I know I say alot of mean things I don't mean and sometimes just can't stop. I hope you were able to reconnect with her. I used to tell people in my life to go away even though I didn't mean it. Me personally, I do need some space when feeling like that but it can go really far if the person says something like "okay, take as much space and time as you need, but I'll be here waiting!" And would hope if they didn't hear from me within 24 hours or even less they would contact me just to say "thinking of you and hoping you are feeling better. Please let me know if I can do something to help!" Of course you don't want to let anyone manipulate you in a BPD episode but them just knowing you WANT to be there really helps.

    • @dfc41
      @dfc41 Před rokem

Also, people with BPD tend to take out their emotions on who means the most to them (aka my poor husband) also for me when venting I dispise when people say "well it could be worse" or "atleast you don't have what so and so has going on" it feels like it belittles your feelings that in that moment don't feel like it could be worse. Having someone say "that would be awful to deal with. I'm so sorry. You are incredibly strong for having to deal with that." Helps. My bestfriend likes to say "hmm yea that's weird" then changes the subject when I'm venting and it kills me. Small issues spark big emotions in people with BPD. I am prone to ripping up photos, taking off for walks and threatening to relapse (I'm a recovered herion addict) when I'm mad even though I know I'm not going to, sometimes it feels good just to let it out so it doesn't just boil inside

"confident " and like you said feel i deserve acomadation for my need and don't really feel bad for my actions ..... till the rage leaves then I'm super sorry .... like devastatinly sorry the major depresstion can hit hard part of what drove my self harm suicied attempts after trying to kill my sister is i was traped inside when i snaped and when i came too i couldn't handle that could do that but in the moemmt of that rage i entitled to a lot lol "confidence "

I was diagnosed with BPD about a week ago. It explains a lot and why life feels so hard and I often feel out of control. I have major mood swings over minimal stress, especially real or percieved abandonment/rejection. It makes life really painful. Not only for me, but the people around me. I am currently seeking DBT therapy.

Dr. Daniel Fox, could you please make a video on how to stop analyzing, I guess you would call it, people when you talk to them. I had to gauge my parents moods growing up, so I’m hyper aware of everything a person does while talking to them. It’s exhausting to take all that in, in literal seconds, so I tend to stay home. I’m a cashier and work is exhausting, I can’t look up until after I’ve listening to their voice to see if they are ok to talk to. Your videos and workbook have changed my life in six months, when over 25 years of therapy did nothing, thank you.

Do you have a video on how to know if your NPD? I do go to therapy. But I fear i am just manipulating my therapist. How do you know? I saw an article once that said if your concerned your a narc your probably not a narc but then again there are narcs who go to therapy and get help, are they faking the help or are the misdiagnosed? We don't have early as much information on NPD as we do on BPD so my question is how do you personally know if you are truly NPD or BPD.

I personally don't see NPD traits. But, maybe you have covert or vulnerable instead of grandiose or malignant. Or maybe no NPD or BPD. Maybe just life is tough, people are selfish and a therapist is another voice to guide you. I need one, but I think I go into entertainment mode around others. So, this is my preferred method of self-help/other help.

    • @kevinhernandez1785
      @kevinhernandez1785 Před rokem

The way I understand it is that, as an example: the person with bpd may have a rageful episode where they say harsh things to their partner, maybe for something trivial that triggered them. For the bpd person it may feel justified whatever harsh thing they said, because their emotions were hurt, and they may not want to apologize. This may be perceived as "You hurt my emotions, so I don't have any reason to apologize for anything" and it would look like entitlement from the point of view of the non-bpd partner (or from any outsider of the relationship). So, you have this conflicting point of views that may end up destroying the relationship. That is why is important that the bpd person gets therapy to learn to manage these impulses, but also the non-bpd partner could take therapy/training (couples therapy) to learn to identify these moments and understand their bpd partner's mind, that not always the harsh words should be taken personally, since it is difficult for their bpd partner to control it.

In my 11 years as a mental health professional on an inpatient psychiatric unit, I saw the similarities and also found that persons with BPD can be extremely selfish and manipulative, and lacking EMPATHY for their loved ones and the providers. The flavor of their behaviors are very similar.

Having had the unfortunate experience of dealing with both of these types of people, I can say that one of the things that makes them very similar is their tendency to manipulate people. Both will use a variety of underhanded tactics to control the emotions and actions of others. Moreover, both will use character assassination tactics to seek revenge and hurt the reputation of those who threaten them or trigger their insecurities. Lastly, both will unconsciously self sabotage and often become their own worst enemy.

I feel that the lyricist of the band Silverchair said it best when he sings:
"I don't wanna be lonely; I just wanna be alone."
Or maybe i'm just the introverted kind of BPD endurer?
Also, lately i feel like my BPD is sort of "transforming" into NPD. It's like i observe myself (sometimes) exhibiting NPD traits.
    Is that even possible, Doc?
Or can BPD & NPD be comorbid?
I've been diagnosed with BPD by a psychologist years ago, btw, so it it's not only a self-diagnosis. Unfortunately for me & my countrymen, DBT & other effective evidence-based treatment options are out of reach, both geographically & financially. (So you fellow endurers who have access to DBT etc, count yourselves very lucky :) And get well soon i truly hope!)
Anyway, thank you for what you're doing, Doc (plus there's something Michael Keaton about you, which makes me enjoy hearing you talk--mean it as a compliment :) ). I hope awareness & accurate information about BPD in the US gets higher & higher, then trickle down to where i live, where awareness & knowledge have just started to grow, but still far far away from enough. Here people can be really skeptic about Psychology as a whole & simply ignore the knowledge & solutions it provides.
Last thing i feel the need to say, maybe it's just me but i feel men with BPD are sort of "under-represented" in discussions about BPD. I feel there are as many men as there are women affected by BPD, but many of us are just too "macho" & prideful to admit that we have a problem.

Thank you for your comment and I actually have a video on men with borderline personality disorder that you might find interesting. I wish you all the best.

Video suggestion time besides your audio difficulty. Doc I know you specialize in treatment of disorders. As I think about my relationships with people and then with each other not everyone qualifies as having a disorder. Or can be called a narcissist or a borderline or a sociopath or an avoidant. They don't qualify for a noun at all. But I noticed in the relationships between people that they might have some of the acceptable qualities of someone that might have a disorder. Such as the person that cannot stand the idea of their boyfriend or girlfriend breaking up with them, or being fired from their job, and the other person who seems slightly more callous about doing so. That there are personality liens based on previous experiences and just genetics Maybe. And of course every single relationship has a power differential there are no true equals. Mother child, employer employee, and I even say friend and friend. One of those friends hell even one of those twins in a twin set, is more likely the leader. And of course the leader is able to vent his or her frustration in ways that the followers not able to. Can you do a video someday just about human relationships where it's not defined by a term like you are codependent you're this or that? Like the basic average human beings and their relationships and how they become unfair, or crumble. I've noticed a lot of people in my own life that when they shut me out they shut me out for good. And I don't think any of them had a personality disorder. And of course there's some people I've met with personality disorders a few unrelated to and I have to get away from them for my own sanity but I don't really shut them out per se. But then I also hear anecdotes about their previous friends or previous girlfriend's boyfriend's ex-husband's ex-wives. EX employer. And it just feels like if narcissism and borderline disorders could be watered down is something acceptable that you're finding these traits in every human being. Someone is the more callous abandoner, and someone is the more weak-willed dependent. Could you do a video just about human relationships? Especially the bad part about them. Speaking to your followers who are concerned about disorders, have their own disorders, or don't have the disorder at all. Is all of us have to deal with other human beings and we're all supposed to create and have relationships in some way or another. But it seems like at least in my world every relationship has got a tipping point.

I think impulsivity is an overlap as well

Yes, you're absolutely right! Impulsivity can definitely overlap with other traits and behaviors. It's fascinating how interconnected everything is.

@@DrDanielFox yes, really fascinating. I’ve encountered both and noticed commonalities.
