  • On backpack and wilderness elk, deer, sheep and goat hunts many hunters will find it difficult to consume enough calories to keep up with the demands of the hunt. A lack of appetite can add to the problems. As a "hard keeper" in the mountains myself, in this video I share some high caloric meal tricks that I used over my years of guiding.

I’m not a big sweets fan, so for those who aren’t here’s one for you. I’m a zip lock snack bag put 1/4 cup of each pistachios, smoked almonds, pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds, and chocolate chips. I’ll usually consume 2 snack bags of these a day and they don’t take that much space.

Chili cheese fritos are some of the most calorie dense foods by weight. If you smash them up and add them to some trail mix you can throw in a ton of calories (and some sodium to replenish salts) with very little weight.

Great video Cliff. I like to alternate sweet and salty snacks during the day. Seems to help with the curbed appetite I experience on the mountain. I can get about 1/3 or more of my calories without trying.
Lots of trail mix and stinger waffles followed by a handful of fritos, Wasabi almonds or meat stick jerky. Bourgeois Meat market in Louisiana makes the best jerky I've ever had and they mail it anywhere in the world. You can't not eat that stuff once you smell it.
