The Uncle Ben Problem: Spider-Man Far From Home

  • I'm BACK for the moment.
Spider-Man: Far From Home is the second installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man series. The movie has already received wide acclaim and is on the track to getting a billion dollars at the box office. I saw the movie too, and I had a blast! But upon further inspection, there's a glaring omission from the movie that is at the core of the problems I have with this incarnation of Spider-Man. Yes, it's some old fart that says something about responsibility or whatever.

The MCU Spider-Man movies are completely soulless imo, it’s not that we needed to see uncle Ben die again, but his death has little to no impact on peter or aunt may in the mcu, they also missed a huge opportunity with aunt May, she could’ve been one that survived the thanos snap and have her go into depression when peter is gone and could’ve lead to huge dramatic tension for when peter comes back in Spider-Man 2 where she could be forbidding peter from being spidey and the dilemma peter faces when choosing to be a hero or choosing to honour his aunts wishes

I was thinking the same thing, they should’ve had May stay alive so that way she’s older (and doesn’t have to be “hot aunt” joke anymore) and she’s even more protective of Peter. I would’ve made Peter even more determined to be Spider-Man and stop crime because of the events of IW & Endgame. He feels like he could’ve done more and maybe the snap would’ve have happened while May HATES that Peter is Spider-Man, she wants him to stop being a hero and be a normal 16/17 yr old kid so she makes him give up his Iron Spider suit and the Homecoming suit and makes him go on the field trip so he can have a fun time and normal but Peter doesn’t like that or want that but it’s nothing he can do about it.

I'm about to make a take, and no this isn't about cOmIc aCcuRacY or CoNsEquEnCes:
I think Peter Parker without Uncle Ben feels very shallow, and incomplete. His potential for character depth is held back by Uncle Ben's absence. These new Spider-Man movies don't deal with death however, and they're meant to be lighthearted which is an issue. They sadly won't have Uncle Ben in the MCU because of this.

I think the they made the movies lightheaded on purpose, because they are kinda giving us a sorta Avengers pattern
Remember what they did with the Avengers movies?
they made the heroes win all the time, when Infinity war came out non comic readers were expecting a win for the heroes..because they saw the pattern of the movies and the MCU was hoping they would expect a win, because when everyone died that was really unexpected. Also i don't think uncle Ben will be mentioned until the later films, because Homecoming was him officially becoming Spider-man in Civil it was kinda obvious that his uncle died and you know the rest of the story........that's why you see him with that homemade spidey suit he made,i feel like when Tony gave him that suit what his uncle said about responsibility really hit him because now he could actually do a lot of things with a suit like that(Helping more people) and Far from home deals with the loss of his Farther figure who came into his life 6 months later after his uncle died.....I think this third movie will at least have a flashback of his uncle, but at least that is what i think

In the MCU , Iron-Boy's mentor is not the man who raised him , loved him , instilled in him moral teachings that would define his Life and died because of the young Man's single moment of selfishness after obtaining powers but rather a self-righteous , arrogant billionare who made his fortune on selling explosives to terrorists , blackmailed his teenage ass to fight a gaggle of superpowered people without any information on what was the situation about or any training , supported an amoral and illegal Law that infringed upon the Human rights of countless people when it specifically did not apply to his priviledged ass , tried to murder a disabled veteran for crimes that were comitted while he was mentally enslaved , ignored him for like a year when he desperately needed guideance , perved on his widowed aunt and mother figure , tried to shame him for not obeying him mindlessly after all the missed calls when he gave him no reason to trust him , shamed him for his work then chastised him for not standing on his own , tried to shame him over drastic actions that he thought he needed to take over the Billionare not actually giving him the proper information on what was happening , took away his property when he had gifted it to him (Forcing him to walk naked through New York City) , credits himself over all his succeses and finally left his teenage ass (after dying like a bitch for no reason) an orbital bombardment weapon that almost accidentally murdered like countless innocent people .
This is just one of the countless reasons why MCU "Spider-Man" will never be Spider-Man .Benjamin Parker is one of the foundational pieces of Peter Parker as a Man and as a Hero .The MCU could never compare .

This is why we need an origin story,no matter how many times we've seen it,no matter how many times we complain that,"Oh,we really don't want or need to rehash the origin all over again." Because when you don't have a great foundation, you don't have a good structure with which to tell good stories. Hence you end up with....well,this. Meandering, directionless, haphazard stuff like this.
That being said, you grossly underestimated this version of Aunt May. Particularly when she discovered that her nephew was Spider-Man.
Seriously, I dare anyone reading this post,to *NOT* have a similar reaction. You can't. It's impossible. Even the Marvel Universe's Aunt May felt the same way, minus the verbal explosion.

Only recently saw FFH and completely agree. I'm perplexed that after 5 movie appearances we still are dealing with Iron Man related plots.
Even more perplexed that Tony would give Edith to a 16 year old and lay that burden on one..especially when Ironman already has a "sidekick" more logically suited to be responsible for something like EDITH....um....War Machine?..anybody remember him?
Where is he in all this? I cannot believe that Pepper is down with this and Aunt May?
It feels like this is Miles Morales Spider-man in an arc that War Machine should have had as far as dealing with a world without iron Man.

literally the only reason why Peter becomes Spider-man is uncle ben. Not Iron Man. Iron Man is who Peter looks up to while Uncle Ben was Peters reason to keep going and save people, no matter what. If Uncle Ben didn't have a big role in Spider-Man Peter would basically be the green goblin. Like what the frick. If they don't make Uncle Ben have a bigger role in Spider-man 3 I'm actually not going to like the mcu spidey anymore. Seeing Uncle Ben die for the third time is not as bad as people believe.
Raimi's Uncle Ben and Webb's Uncle Ben have the character go through different stories.
Raimi's Peter sees the man who killed his uncle was the guy he let go? He cries and then pulls himself up.

In Homecoming there is a teacher simply name Ms.Warren (probably relate to Miles Warren aka Jackal), not to mention the makeshift Spidey suit resemble Ben Reilly suit. As for Aunt May somewhere off screen they brainwashed her just to keep her mouth shut and that explain the "What the fu.." moment didn't go anywhere.

It is sad. But that's because he's one of the worst parts of the MCU. His character had potential, especially what it represented to Tony. But now that Tony is gone, Peter is just there to take part in teen comedy movies with a superhero backdrop. Since there isn't a lot of maturity or depth to his character and films, Iron Man dying has left this Spider-man with not much to do in this universe. Tony was too important to this Peter's motivation and character arc, and now the MCU Peter just wonders around stumbling and bumbling.
I think people are way to obsessed with Spider-man being a teenager to see that there is more to his character than just trying to go to prom and be Spider-man.
His character was about his guilt and responsibility complex, but that is nowhere to be found in the MCU Spidey. So he just kinda does superhero stuff to prove himself to Tony, and then to honor Tony I guess? Which doesn't really create many thematic dilemmas in the actual stories.

But I think that maybe there isn't a uncle Ben in Tom's universe at all, maybe aunt may has been single the entire time, seeing as to how they never touch specifically on uncle Ben at all. Like not once is he mentioned by name or even hinted at, so I think it's very likely that he simply doesn't exist. That being said, I think you're right in that to have a good Spiderman we do need that lesson learned, that tragic past that keeps Peter going because he always wants to do what uncle Ben would've wanted, to be the kind of man he was. And the fact that all the beat Peter parkers were the best were flawed by the fact that they always had to live with the fact that it was their fault, the hero always had to never forgive himself for it

To Peter Parker, Aunt May is his courage, his world and his motivation to get up everyday to save people no matter how fuck up the situation is or he’s at his breaking point.
For Spider-Man, Ironman captain America Thor and other superheroes are someone he looks up to as hero and wants to be as great as them. So consider how in this MCU, Tony Stark was the first hero that approached him and ask his help, it makes sense he became his mentor and all that. But....for both Peter/Spider-Man, Uncle Ben is someone he aspire to become. The day he died is the day Peter stop being naive, stupid and selfish. He put the city and the people first beyond anything else. See, no matter how brilliant or powerful or even if he become the greatest superheroes, Peter will always thinks he’s far from becoming as great as Uncle Ben.

So while I understand the Spider-Man fans, I also understand for normal moviegoers who don’t read the comics doesn’t want to repeat the same thing everytime they redo the characters. Changing certain storyline is fine coz I think we all can agree there are things in the comic will not make sense in a live action Movie. The rules are different. But the basic fundamental of a person becoming a hero is something you CANNOT change no matter how many times you reboot it, in this case Uncle Ben.

The only difference between Tony Stark and Uncle Ben is that Uncle Ben is really worried and concerned about Peter's future. He tries to motivate Peter to do good things by teaching him the principles of philosophy. I don't believe Stark enables Peter to do good at the first place, he just finds some flaws in Peter and never helps him to overcome those flaws. Tony never helps Peter in his journey into becoming a 'man'. He always is somewhat like this, "Do this Peter because I said so!" or "You're no backup, the adults are talking." I can't imagine of comparing Uncle Ben to Tony Stark, it's impossible!

I like hunterxhunter, but to me and many other people excluding kite from the anime was a pretty bad idea that hide funtamental info for those that didn't read the manga. Same thing with tom holland (i refuse to call him spiderman or peter parker) its pretty shallow story telling if you rob the main character motivation and even if you change that character motiv, change it for something just meaningfull like they did with miles in into the spiderverse, than just wanting tony stark sugar baby.

I have a good idea for Spider-Man no way home. I think a good focus of the movie should be Tom realizing how he has tried to place the image of uncle Ben and his parents on tony. They barely know each other and Peter is trying to not feel like he has no father as all are gone and when tony died he felt as if his uncle was dying again and by the end he finally accepts his uncle and parents are dead and he’s not gonna use a rich dude he barely knows to try to keep them alive through tony and is going to look up to his parents and their teachings and them be the big influence for him being Spider-Man and parental figures for him even if they are dead and not a stranger like tony. One way to start this is when seeing Tobey and Andrew for the first time he realizes they look exactly like his uncle and dad. One false report said that the grave scene in far from home was supposed to have his uncle and parents names and then have Ironman pop up to show he’s trying to put the image of his father figures on Ironman and I wish this was what happened as it is way more meaningful and deep. It said it was avi arads fault and with the new deal he has no power when actually he had no power in the first place but it did say marvel has more power in the movies which I hope is true. If you say they spent a lot of time that’s not true. They spent this much time together: Ironman recruites Peter and leaves, They fight cap, tony brings him home, tony occasionally tells Peter to back off and then he takes the suit. Tony offers Peter to join the avengers and Peter refuses. Peter joins the fight against thanks then dies, comes back and then watches tony die. This would work very well with what I’ve said so far as they barely have had anytime together to justify peters sadness. I hope dr stranges role in the movie is very minor and only as much time as ragnorak and only be involved in the multiverse stuff crap. The major roles taking that place should be Toby and Andrew who help him not replace his parental figures but only look up to his real parents

If you don't keep the core of the character then it isn't that character, and as idiots will say that that doesn't matter, then you can't say Spidey is your favorite because then there is nothing consistent that makes him your favorite.

I am assuming that in the next spiderman film another villain would like to fuck up spiderman because of Tony Stark. John Watts and his team of lazy ass writers will never change. They will use Iron Man as the cause iof every shit that happened in the MCU. Peter and his friends even though he mostly ever talked to Ned about was legos and what it's like being a hero. Almost everything you named is arbitrary and doesn't hold or add to his character. And the ones that I do count are still downplayed by being followed up by a joke and not being able to isolate itself from the story to just be real. The scene with Vulture is the closest for me because it took itself seriously, but is still buried in the superhero antics.
A much better example than Mysterio s the nice everything was a lie and is so forced which makes every scene with Peter forced because it relies in Peter being super dumber down for it to be believable that he allowed himself to get tee ricked by beck.

I hope they for No way home they bring back Uncle Ben which if the multiverse is true I hope that Tobey looks like Uncle Ben and this makes Peter think more on his uncle and he has been trying to avoid his death as he feels pain from it. And throughout the movie he finally accepts to accept his true father figure. He has been planting his uncles image in Tony to try to make him not dead in his mind which is why even after such little time together he is very depressed about Tony’s death as it felt as if loosing uncle Ben all over again. I hope then accepts the with great power comes great responsibility line and keeps it to heart. His line he says in civil war he said is only a rewording he said to try not to say what Ben said as it was too painful to think about and he tries to avoid it to avoid pain. And by the end he accepts it. Aunt May seeing Toby could trigger her to be sadder as she then thinks of Ben more and starts to avoid people and she becomes more worried about Peter as basically seeing uncle Ben again makes hero more paranoid. Having Peter having his identity revealed is a good fresh idea but I think it makes lots of other stories not very easy to access and it makes it more dramatic. I hope by the end he proves he isn’t Spider-Man. It would probably make Peter more of an outcast and Aunt May have money problems because of this movies events and this trilogy ending off the arc of Peter finally becoming Spider-Man embracing his uncle bens teachings, setting up the troubles of him and his aunt. And give the glasses to Rhodey and the suit and he makes his own with no stark technology to be his own independent hero no dependent on another. In a future movie it could be interesting for Ned to become Hobgoblin as it could be much more personal as he knows peters identity and was so close to him and be an interesting arc for Peter and maybe create the night Gwen died with Michelle which could further him more into being Spider-Man and being responsible. Through I doubt they’d go this far.

Uncle Ben is not just a character, he is someone in every Spider-Man’s life that causes them to become Spider-Man in my opinion. Just because Uncle Ben isn’t Uncle Ben doesn’t mean that Peter doesn’t have an “Uncle Ben”. You follow? I personally admire the way they made Tony the “Uncle Ben” for mcu Peter because although he doesn’t get told the best goddamn motto in comic history, he does still get an important lesson on responsibility. Peter learns that with great power comes great responsibility in his own way through Tony, and I love that the writers found a way to put this in even while leaving it unsaid. Peter’s character is him debating on whether or not he has the power to live up to the responsibility of someone like Tony. At the end of the day, every Spider-Man has an Uncle Ben, and I personally think that the fact that an alternative Peter not having and actual Uncle Ben be the reason he became Spider-Man shouldn’t really be a point of argument. If you think about it Miles Morales’ “Uncle Ben” was Peter himself, which is another thing I admire from not only Brian Michael Bendis for making it poetic but the mcu writers for adapting this idea for a separate version Peter, all the while putting their own twist on it. At the end of the day I do respect your opinion but I disagree, thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

Nice ted talk, although can't say I disagree with Peter learning about responsibility though tony because he already learned in civil war, explaining his motivation

@@daryltor7608 He did somewhat in homecoming, but Tony’s death raised the stakes. He got his first real rodeo but he went from friendly neighborhood to friendly cosmic neighborhood so fast. His death taught him that some responsibilities you don’t always have the power to handle. To elaborate, he had no control over who died, and he couldn’t stop thanos on his own. He had to face the harsh reality when he died that he didn’t have enough power to face the responsibility of stopping thanos. And after being resurrected and again not having the power to save Tony, Peter’s character takes a shift from “I need to have the power to face responsibility” to “I need to be responsible for becoming the most powerful I can be to live up to those who had to face said responsibilities in the past” and that’s essentially why I love MCU Peter so much.

@@daryltor7608 His entire character and writing plays and dabbles with the philosophy of “with great power comes great responsibility” and turns it into something completely new and different. It takes what makes Spider-Man Spider-Man and a applies it in such a unique perspective that it makes you go “well I’ve never thought about it that way”. And I think that those were the writers’ intentions.

All they have to is at some point in Spider-Man 3 have him say to a picture or gravestone of Ben,”miss you. I don’t think I am fit to carry our dreams of responsibility out into the world.” I can’t save people, I can barely save my myself.” It does not to be this but something like this(with better dialogue lol) would be a perfect to show Ben’s importance

Nah then you have some Diehard MCU or Spidey fans that like this version saying "wow Marvel Studios really are kiss ups to they're critics, they really wanted to shut up those Not my Spider-Man people"
Hell the other half of those Spidey fans will say something like "YOU CAN'T TELL THE ORIGIN IN THE 3RD PART OF A TRILOGY! Its wasting time for this movie!"
It's a win lose situation unless the writers figure something out that works for the narrative and please everyone
It's a win for MCU Spidey and MCU fans because the next film can focus on Peter dealing with the world knowing he's Spider-Man and how Peter deals with it on his own.
It's a lose for Spidery fans because it's still Spider-Man without Uncle Ben and Aunt May being a less prominent character, still not having Peter have financial struggles, and whatever else has been said
And saddly unless Spider-Man Home Sweet Home (or something) address it's criticisms while at the same time provide a narrative that doesn't slow down to address every complaint up to that point, then the Spidey Fan base will be split until there's a Second Trilogy that has Peter entering College and become an Adult and become the Spidey we all know and love (at least I hope)
