Medley - Farewell to Uist, The Lochaber Badger, RIP the Badger: Fred Morrison - whistle and pipes Michael McGoldrick - whistle and pipes Donal Lunny - bouzouki Jerry Douglas - dobro
Fred is obsessed with music. He never sleeps, I spent some time with him a few years ago in Cape Breton and he would stay up all night playing tunes by himself. He's amazing! Nice guy
This is definitly one of my favourite clips of the whole series. I love Fred Morrisons face at 3:16. It's like he's surprised by the sound they're producing. The bouzouki, dobro and pipes blend so well together.
+Bverlooy and the funny thing is that Michael McGoldrick looks at the window, as if Fred Morrisons saw a gost ! :) Great music... I love it all so much!!
Jerry Douglas. He's been around a while in bluegrass and country circuits, including Alison Krauss and Union Station. He has also recorded with Tony Rice, J.D. Crowe, Ricky Skaggs, and many others. A number of good albums out under his own name as well.
. sma sinn. Tomtscotland, your efforts are much appreciated by this CZcams user.Between Transatlantic and Highland sessions and what other folk download onto CZcams; it makes me bluidy homesick at times.
Great music -Fred makes it look so easy -the sure sign of a master performer .This is an excellent combination of skills for all the players...lets see more like this -makes a change from the strained glum faces
One word...Magic! couldn't be anything else with these guys..... :) tomtscotland - virtually all vids you have here are wonderfull, it's a great collection...keep 'm coming! I subscribed anyway. Thanks!
Michael McGoldrick eventually switched to playing goldies instead of Kerry Pro, so it could possibly be a Goldie. You can tell the difference easily on the tunable models because the tuning slide is different (the kerry pro has an external slide, and the goldies is internal), but it appears he is playing an untunable one here, so it's hard telling which, as they look nearly identical.
Rip the Calico seems a tad fast but very rousing, at least for me. Love Lochaber Badger especially though, wonder tune, and that dobro fits nicely. Not sure what Fred was thinking there with replacing an entire phrase with a repeated ornament though.... good nonetheless, and wow, Donal Lunny certainly looks different than when he was with The Bothy Band...
+yassy588 I don't think climate in general affects pipes. They can be somewhat adjusted, but if it's below freezing outside, I found them to be extremely difficult. Temperature variations may affect them, like when you tune up in an air conditioned room and then play outside.
Does anyone know whether the title 'Farewell to Uist' is real or an error? Last I know, Fred Morrison hadn't named the waltz that he plays alongside Lochaber Badger, and farewell to Uist is a very different tune, but it is possible the two have the same name.

I keep coming back to listen to this over and over again! It amazes me and it's played so beautifully :')

...not so far - but other programmes still to be broadcast - so watch this space!
The pipes Fred is playing are "reel pipes". HIs own invention I believe.
I have to play this on guitar
+Catherine Movies Tried it, im not a monster on the guitar, but it loses all the magic :(
Give the man a dram. :)
I've said it before, but SUAS E!
Mike's playing uilleann pipes, while Fred is playing reelpipes. Check out reelpipesdotcom for more info on those.
the low whistle of mcgoldrick is a overton whistle(now colin goldie whistle)
Does anybody have the music sheet for the pipes on the second fast tune? It's awesome! Thanks!
It's Rip the Calico, not Rip the Badger! lol
Transatlantic sessions 3 volume one album of the TV series
Fred is playing an MK whistle made by Misha Somerville. Very nice instruments.
Michael McGoldrick eventually switched to playing goldies instead of Kerry Pro, so it could possibly be a Goldie. Definitely a Goldie.
that was amazing!! those are uillean pipes, right? love it
Google for MK Whistles by Mischa Somerville.
this is awesome what albums are these on?!
Hope you've got plenty of dosh!
Fucking wizard.
They are playing Low D whistles. Mike Mcgoldrick is playing a Kerry Pro Low D and Fred Morrison is playing an MK Low D (I think).
You're right about the MK. Mike's an Overton / Goldie.
Rip the Calico seems a tad fast but very rousing, at least for me. Love Lochaber Badger especially though, wonder tune, and that dobro fits nicely.

@basis64 Not necissarily a very fast reel. Lovely when played slower as well.
Suas e!
The last song is Rip The Calico, not the badger ;-)
I -think- the mouthpiece looks more Goldie than Kerry Pro. But I'm not sure, I'm not really a whistler. :)
wonder*ful* tune I meant to say...
Either Scotish low-land pipes or North Humbrian pipes.
check out my video response, a michael mcgoldrick tune, honesty bar from his album Wired!
Did Fred play any more in this secession?
Umh on which tones are that flutes??D?
what is the name of this movie??
it's transatlantic sessions 3rd series if i'm not mistaken
Anyone know who is playing Dobro?
Does anyone know whether the title 'Farewell to Uist' is real or an error? Last I know, Fred Morrison hadn't named the waltz that he plays alongside Lochaber Badger, and farewell to Uist is a very different tune, but it is possible the two have the same name.
Michael is playing an overton (I have one in black), not too sure what fred is playing.
Fred's playing an MK Pro.
What kind of whistles are they playing?
Low D whistles
Michael McGoldrick is playing an Overton/Goldie and Fred Morrison an MK Pro. Both are low D whistles.
It is, they probably just accidentally put it that way
@syllogism314 Jeryy douglas
they're actually fred morrison small pipes
B
.......
they're from scotland and no, they aren't his invention =)
The envy is an ugly beast,eh?
I did good?
