- This 60-second TV spot was sent to TV stations to promote the original theatrical release of "Star Wars" in 1977. This upload was sourced from the 2-inch tape, which I subsequently archived on 1-inch tape, then Digital Betacam.

No doubt, if this was before the premiere, New York stations would have had a prerecorded V/O by Howard Reig saying something like, "Starts Wednesday at select theatres. Check newspapers for show times."
If only they knew just how that one flick would become a phenomenon years later.
A phenomenon that would really catapult George Lucas and its stars right to the top of success.
@@tyrese3745 So far, they have 11 live-action Star Wars movies in chronological order:
1. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
2. Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
3. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
4. Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
5. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)
6. Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977)
7. Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
8. Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983)
9. Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
10. Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
11. Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
It was a phenomenon as _soon_ as it hit theaters.
1:05 - Starts Wednesday, May 25 at a theater near you. Check newspapers for show times.
May The Force Be With You In STAR WARS!
Thanks so much for sharing! The best version in this I've seen yet. Hope you track down more SW stuff 👍👍👍
Speaking of Star Wars trailers, my bio-dad (who was working at a radio station in a small town in WV) cut a radio promo for the film's showing at the local theater in 1977 (there was no mall and thus no multiplex back then). Odfly, his promo said it was rated G...I wonder if that ws a preliminary rating (possibly from the scrubbed Christmas 1976 release) or what.
Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) is rated PG for Sci-Fi Violence and Brief Mild Language.
I can imagine how expensive 1-inch and 2-inch videotapes were compared to Betamax and VHS.
Let me guess: $50-100 per cassette?
Actually it was pretty cheap, as 1-inch and 2-inch spots were distributed on what we referred to as "spot reels" -- small plastic reels about 8-inches in diameter, with just enough tape on there to cover the length that was needed. Probably about $1 each, in the quantities they had to buy.
@@VPR2B Can you upload the TV spots for Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983), please?
@@Naminski1a If I had those in my possession, I'd be glad to oblige. This "Star Wars" spot is the only one I have.
@@VPR2B That's a rare TV spot.
Walt Disney loves this film so much, he wants to buy it.
As of present day, Disney now both owns 20th Century Studios and Lucasfilm Ltd.
@@Naminski1aIt's sad. So sad. It's a sad sad situation.
@@King_Colombia_Inc 20th Century Studios was used to be 20th Century-Fox.
@@King_Colombia_Incand it’s getting more and more absurd 😉
This movie title is also known as Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977).
Retroactively, yes. But not at the time.
@@josephD32 Also, the Episode IV subtitle was added in the opening crawl for the 1981 theatrical re-release.
