Good idea using a noisy bitmap as a source of noise or splatter then tracing it

Thanks! I find that it is often the best way of getting a textured object, rather than clipping them. It works well with most bitmaps but you just have to be aware that some of them create thousands of nodes so hardware becomes very relevant.
Give it a try, it's really easy to do #StayCreative

I came across your channel because of a problem I am having with trying to create a rubber stamp effect and it seems that sometime in the last few years there was a change made to inkscape that rendered the tutorials I was trying to follow invalid. The technique looks something like this: You create a box or a circle with text in it. Then you take the calligraphy tool and scribble all over it, pretty much covering the whole box and text but leaving some small gaps. In the old videos (3 to 6 years ago) you would then convert to paths and then click on intersection and boom, ya got something like rubber stamp that has not been fully inked. Then I came across something similar that uses the clip command. My problem is that everything vanishes. I have black squiggles over the red text and the red boxes and then I have zip-a blank page. I can get it back by pressing CTRL Z but that doesn't get me to the effect I am looking for. If I do just the box it works. But when I do the text it all goes away. Your video on the grunge effect is similar to the look I am after. Thanks. Interestingly-your videos seem to be the most recent Inkscape tutorials on CZcams. I am now subscribed too.

      Hi there Jim,
I know the exact problem you are referring to as I used to have the same problem too when I started with Inkscape. Usually it is down to the method used but it is sometimes difficult to know which method to use, especially when you are unaware that the aforementioned method exists lol. In your case, the likelihood is the fact the text wasn't converted to a path first. It could also be because you did not Duplicate first. When you use a path command like Difference, Intersection etc. you are using the two objects selected and they will both be deleted, then replaced with the result. However, this will not work with Text objects because they are not Paths.
I thank you for your support by subscribing. I really appreciate it. If you ever have problems using Inkscape, I will happily help you to get the effect you want. Remember to #StayCreative my friend
