    David, I highly enjoyed your comments and your perspective. I’ve listen to it twice now pondering and thinking about your words. I would have to agree with you on most items. I like you and Gage in this hobby for my personal enjoyment. I use it to relax me in the evening doing exactly as you said, I watch movies, podcasts, talk to my children, talk to my wife and paint and model and build. This hobby that I engage in is solely for my enjoyment. I game every now and then with a group maybe once a month and I enjoy the camaraderie. But moreover, it’s for my enjoyment and I just enjoy painting. My CZcams channel I created for an entirely different purpose it wasn’t, to monetize it, it was not to become popular. It was to do nothing else, except to document in a video format, my work for my children, and to maybe help somebody that wants to see what an army would look like, get some ideas I basically just look at the armies for nothing more than just their own enjoyment. Do you and I think very very similar and it was refreshing to hear your viewpoint. Couple of times I actually had to laugh.

    Interesting comments, thank you for sharing. Suppose it could come down to balancing three items. A person's goals (every one has them even if they aren't picking them fully consciously), the limits that are placed on us with the limits the person places on their self, and taking care of our self. We get to choose what we want to watch, choose what we want to put up with, choose if we let it effect us, choose if we want to use it for positive or negative social effect, etc. Although only if we go slow enough in making our choices. Thank you for producing quality because it adds to the community in a positive way.😎👍

    You made some great points about getting mainly the extremes of people who leave comments being overly positive or overly negative. Particularly, when it comes to politics as well. I am definitely guilty of watching tons of videos and letting them run in the background so, I think for the next month I will try to leave small comments and like if I enjoyed the video or dislike if I found it boring or not interesting. Small thing but hey maybe it will help if enough people do it.

      Thank you for your thoughtful comment Joshua.
      Making an effort to leave comments or like/dislike might be nicety that people "should" do, or at least, I imagine what CZcams would prefer people do.
      However, by that same token, I don't think there is anything implicitly wrong with just letting a video run in the background as part of a queue, and NOT liking/disliking/commenting.
      I suppose how we interact in the above scenario is large on a case-by-case basis. I often find myself leaving questions in comments, or telling the creator that I really enjoyed their video, and what specifically I enjoyed.
      That said, I am concerned that there is a culture of inanity developing around comments, but this is only really an issue if the expectation that the creator of the video will reply to all comments. The CZcams Studio app certainly implies that this is what CZcams wants.
      Example, beyond a "thank you", how does one meaningfully interact with a comment like "Nice 1 m8"? The sentiment is essentially a verbal like.
      I suppose, ultimately, comments/likes/dislikes can be as inane as each other. This is why I enjoy the thoughtful comment, like yours, it leads to real engagement, ie. Those community conversations.
      Thanks again for stopping by.
      David

    If you turn your hobby into a job, you need a new hobby.

    Great video! Thank you for your input on this "ongoing" topic. Yes, this is a small niche in the CZcams world. Keep at it and have fun with your hobby. Take care.

    It's quite a difficult topic. We were once on the way to Utopia, but we took a wrong turn. In my opinion, the era of capitalism is long over. Welcome to pseudo-capitalism. Explaining the process is quite time-consuming, but one result is that people are pushed into niches like YT because the job market no longer needs them.
    I started my channel when I was banned from the workforce. I didn't have time for anything like that before. Now it's kind of my job. Not because of money, but for the structure of the day and to have something to do. Also to be able to talk to people again. As humans, we need communication more than money. (Mostly.) But I have to admit that I don't know if I would monetize if I could. It's not... my style. I could use it for my hobby. I'm currently using what I accumulated beforehand but never used.
    Just to briefly show another perspective. 😉PS. Nice Whiskey.

      A very thoughtful comment. I do intend to talk at greater length on the topic of the future of work. I work in automation within IT, and frankly, my job is to work myself out of my current job by creating tools that replicate my workflows. It's a weird way to live.
      I enjoy your channel very much and watch everything you put out, though I do not always comment.

    I enjoyed that so much. I'm aware of the existence of VK's and Leon's videos but haven't watched them yet, if ever. I'm not sure it's healthy just to keep these topics bouncing in the air like kick footballs - the end result is just 'kerching' in terms of views and revenue without any advancement. But this video is a very contemplative and insightful discussion of the issues. I may well do a response but I haven't much time before I am off visiting friends, so it might be a week or two. One thing I'd like to talk about is the advertiser's perspective. I used to work in advertising and I regret the time I spent and the person it turned me into temporarily, but I do find the whole issue of placement of adverts and reaching target audiences fascinating so may well talk about that. Thanks for a thought provoking discussion.

      Always appreciate your insights, Ralph. I'd be particularly interested in hearing about how advertisers minds work. Gladly, I have never had to work in a role like that (or sales for that matter).
      In terms of the "keepy up" like a football analogy, I agree, not worth keeping those topics alive, just wanted to say my piece, comment on the dynamic itself, and then move on.
      Based on what I said in the video, I was inspired to do a heavy cull of the channels I follow, there was a lot of rubbish in that list that did not add any value to my CZcams experience, so good riddance!
      Oh, and since I couldn't comment there, I really enjoyed your Lee Moor video. Inspired by it and other of your videos, I did some reading on Dartmoor area, and the geology of the Cornubian batholith is fascinating. I find myself reading about rocks in addition to everything else!

      @@ZenMiniPainting I recently read a book on Dartmoor by Matthew Kelly called 'Quartz and Feldspar' and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's has a different approach to any other book on Dartmoor I've read (and I've read a lot). It's really several long essays on different aspects of the moor, rather than one continuous read. I particular liked his account of how the moor has been represented by antiquarians and archeologists over the centuries and our perceptions of our national culture have changed over the years as a result - for instance we know druids existed from Roman accounts but were they on the moor, did the natural rock formations form a part of their religion and how did they interact with the much earlier stone circles and rows which predate them by millenia? Fascinating stuff.

    I enjoyed your video. I have noticed when posting videos that the algorithm can dictate what you do. I can make a video and edit for 20 hours but if it doesn't include the word "40k" it will barely get any views. At that point is it worth editing that video and posting it? It eats away at your hobby time. You start chasing this dragon trying to get views and it starts to feel like a responsibility. Maybe its best for a hobby youtuber to post whatever they are working on and if people enjoy its is great but if it doesn't get many views at least its a journal of what you were doing at the time. I know if my channel were to ever be monetized I would just use it for hobby supplies. I don't need it though. It would be good to post something at your hobby desk as a reminder, something to remind you that this is for leisure. It is not a job. If it becomes a stress and responsibility it is self-defeating. Good points, I hope you make more videos like this.

    • @ZenMiniPainting
      @ZenMiniPainting  Před rokem

      Absolutely. I think that one has to get comfortable with the idea that not all videos are for everyone.
      I suppose we can put it like this, would we rather have 100 subscribers who care, comment (meaningfully), and whose ideas/criticisms are useful, or 10k subscribers, but no sense of community or collaboration (in the broadest sense). I think the quality of the former is more my speed.
      So yes, no dragon chasing here. Perhaps my videos aren't as polished as some, but as you point out, I get more time to actually paint as a result.

    Okay, wow. The Midwinter Minis video did not say that or imply anything of the sort. It seems people in the 'historicals community' on CZcams are pretty desperate to play the victim for some stupid reason.

    • @ZenMiniPainting
      @ZenMiniPainting  Před měsícem

      Hello, thanks for watching my video and commenting thoughtfully. It's been a while since this video,.
      I don't have a tonne of time to do a blow-by-blow on the Midwinter Minis video, but I think I had two issues with their video:
      1. Calling the German Army "Nazis" throughout is not productive or clever. The Wehrmacht was not an extension of the NSDAP like the SS was, and the motivations of average Wehrmacht soldier are likely to be as varied as those who fought on the Allied side.
      2. At czcams.com/video/apOe1XFzcRc/video.htmlsi=K2AlsCEbPMbNZfJN&t=271 they cut to the core problem I see here: People are okay being space fascists when they are killing space monsters, and that is okay. Far-right people might want to play as the Germans, and that is not okay. This is a weird straw man that has been around for a while. Show me these historical players who are playing the Germans as a sort of weird fantasy. The thing is, we know those people exist in the Warhammer 40k community, festooned as it is with Nazi or Nazi-adjacent rhetoric and symbols, but I am yet to see these fascists playing Chain of Command.

      One final thought, and one that likely needs more thorough discussion and thought is the risk of the younger generation having little context for the war, and perhaps a nascent sanitization and glorification of the German war machine becoming the fashion. Especially in this day of "alternative facts". I think that on the whole the historical wargaming community has done a good job of thoughtfully engaging with the subject matter and retaining the sense of history, thus far. How that develops in the future remains to be seen.
