Nice video. I have had my turbo replaced. Also had the coolant intrusion problem. I put a bottle of K Seal in the coolant reservoir and was shocked that it stopped the coolant burning 30k miles ago. I now have 225k on the original engine. Mines a 2015 Escape 2.0
I have a 2014 fiesta st with 170,000 miles. Other than a radiator fan and a valve cover gasket replacement no problems so far
My 1.6 just went over 205,000 always serviced it myself from mile 0. Maintenance your vehicle and address every issue and it'll last for a long-time
I'm at 93k with my 2016 escape 1.6 had to replace 2 motor mounts, 2 cv joints and ac compressor. I did buy it at 67k tho previous owner was probably a psycho
Mine went all of 62,000 miles - and yes, it was well maintained. The second worst piece of junk I’ve ever owned, beat out only by a ‘72 Vega I owned back in high school. My Fusion was my last Ford ever. In addition to engine issues, I had to replace the steering rack twice, once under warranty, the second time at 52,000 miles. I’m happy for you, though.
18 Fusion, 2.0ecoboost, 56k miles been eating coolant for a while, loss of power, etc. 6 months out of powertrain warranty, thank god I bought an aftermarket. Almost $9k later, new long block and tons of parts. Hope she lasts cause it’s a good car when it wants to be
I have cmax 2013 1.6 ecoboost with 260000 km
We did the same here, impeccably serviced, a 2016, at 61k, the turbo is pushing so much oil out that the engine won’t idle.
I'm working on a 1.5 now, it's just a crazy design. The tensioner for the cam belt is mounted to the water pump plate, (replacing the water pump now at 60 000 miles) you have to tilt the engine to get the alternator out etc. It's almost like these engines were designed to break, and be expensive to repair.
I have a Volvo S60 with this engine and have never had an issue with it. Serviced engine and gearbox on time with high quality oil and no issues in 7 years. Wear and tear parts replaced as with any car.
My wife has this engine in her V60. No issues with 145.000km now.
@@ohnehax 140 is too little. W8 for 180
I have the same car, 100,000km and wear and tear items. Had a bunch of oil leaks fixed on it recently.
That's very low KM for oil leaks. Is that because of poor maintenance or incorrect oil spec?
@Craig Abrahams not sure, it was ex Japan. I got it at 70,000kms. Needed a new rocker cover gasket, vacuum pump seal. I've always done servicing on time. Maybe it was abused in a previous life.
The man speaks the truth. They’re trash. I’m replacing one right now and it isn’t our first.
And yet you still keep buying em, what you called that😂
I think he’s racist against owning Japanese cars. Research what’s reliable. It’s not ford
I agree 100% with Boss Automotive. I ordered and built from Ford a 2013 1.6 escape in 2012 and it failed at 89,000 miles with this very issue. All oil changes(old school) at 3,000 miles and fluid changes as per ford. Please, If you are having these issues with your ford do not sell or trade in your piece of junk for some other person to loose their money. Send them to get recycled!
Not everyone can afford to just throw out their vehicle. My family has one vehicle. Without that vehicle, nobody gets to work. Nobody gets to school. My husband is in kidney failure, I need a car to get him to his doctors appointments. My engine went out with this exact problem. Why should I have to chalk over $20,000 so the next person doesn't get screwed? I think maybe as consumers, we should do a better job researching what we're buying. I'm not throwing away over 20k just so someone else doesn't have the same issue. I will agree, the cars are junk, but I shouldn't have to write off several months worth of pay over a company not doing right by its customers. They just win and us little people lose. If cars weren't so expensive, it wouldn't be an issue. In today's economy, I don't know ANYONE who can afford to just "recycle their car" and not get some kind of trade value for it. I wish it was that easy.
@@formerlyknownasbribri if you are trading in a car with a bad engine you are recycling because the dealer will give you scrap price. If they give you more than $350.00 they are just taking off from price of new car. They will most likely send to salvage yard. I think what he is referring to is selling it with a engine ready to blow to someone that knows nothing about cars. That would be mean and Karma is tough sometimes.
@BlitzHack I disagree. Dude clearly says "don't trade in or sell your junk for someone else to get screwed." He was referring to actually recycling it, scrapping it out. But nice try. It's so irrelevant because the car has been fixed. Have a nice day.
I just bought a 2013 Fusion 1.6T and although the engine makes noise it seems fairly solid. 117k miles $1000. Have a 2012 Fusion 2.5L with over 200k miles and never a problem beyond normal maintenance. I'll update you on the '13 and it's 1.6 ecoboost noises. It actually sounds as if it were an old v8 with loose rocker arms and pushrods jumping all over the place
I have the 13 1.6 and I’m having the coolant issue. It started 4 weeks ago. It just crossed the 100k mark. I’m loosing a lot of coolant and it’s not on the ground…
This happened to my car at 49K miles. I'm actually in the process of going after ford over it, thankfully I live in a state that has good lemon law protection. This car hasn't ran right since March 2022, and is currently at the dealership even now being worked on. Had the short block replaced in May.... nothing but problems. I'll never buy a ford of any kind again.
me too
My 18 ford transit eco just tanked. Engine is done failed block test and major fuel inlet leak. maintained it perfectly never had any problems until it suddenly didn’t.
interested in suing. Pls msg me if you have info on that. I’m in VA- also a good lemon law state.
Fiesta St 1.6. 200,000 miles. No major issues. Coolant issues addressed early during recall!!😂😂
What did the recall do?
@@mtvguy54 changed the hoses from plastic to rubber. Added additional sensor that detects volume of coolant rather than just temp.
I was just checking out a 2012 Ford Mondeo to buy. Looking around online the only problem with I found with these cars is the 1.6L SCTi engine. But oh boy does this seem like a quite significant problem.
I have a 2014 escape. From what I am seeing this problem started in the 2015 motors. The best I have been able to find is Ford changed the cly/bore and that made the spacing between the cly/ closer and caused the cooling problem that's why the very small slit you see between the cyl/. My 2 problems are the rear end aliment I fixed with a aftermarket kit and the evap/ system as it to will cause some of the same problems you mentioned. BUT your right I'm looking at a new vehicle and avoiding FORD. Just don't understand after all these years they have not fixed this problem. Very sad on their part.
This man just saved me from buying a Ford. Phew, close one
It’s not any Ford it’s the eco-boost FYI
The 2015 ford escape 1.6 l eco-boost has a four out of five from J.D. POWER. Which is well above average for the class. Mar 3, 2020
1 got a 1.6 ecoboost fusion with 160k miles and anve never had issues with the engine aside from Carbon build up .. maintenance is key and they are not race engines really.. they are aimed at economy... I've seen some ppl drive em like v8 engines reving em sky high ... I just drive it normally and let it do its thing...
This car is for looks more thar anything
I get tired of people saying “maintenance is key” when mine was well maintained and the engine still failed. 😂😂😂
I just got one used 2013 with over 200k miles and is running ok little weird when pressing on gas to go over 70 miles per hour in the freeway hopefully last me an other year
Man’s speaking facts.. I have a fiesta st and at 20k miles, I started modifying the thing for more power and we found that in cylinder 4..or 1 idk the firing order, was already spitting antifreeze into the cylinder… arp head studs and a better head gasket was the first thing I did.
Now I have a bigger turbo boosting 21+ lbs of boost making 350 wheel hp. I’m now at 70k miles and aside from some lost compression over the years due to the cheap low tension rings everyone seems to be using now, I haven’t lost a drop “that I can see” of coolant.
BUT I have spent too much money on maintenance over the years on it to be sure it stayed healthy. At this point, it’s not if it will fail.., it’s WHEN will it fail.. would love to stay ford ecoboost powered, but I’m already making plans for a K24 swap…
Just get the updated block and swap parts over. It's cheaper than getting a used block, and you can keep your software and parts invested. You should even be able to push more out of it
@@AndyE30Which year has the updated one? thanks
This ^^
Mine done over 200k. No issues so far!!
So what is the best prevention we can take to avoid coolant passing that small area into the cylinder when we doing engine repair
Many thanks for the update, when you say a block guard are you referring to shims in the groove, same as the Volvo fix?
Thanks again.
Fiesta ST 1.6 ecoboost is the most reliable out of them all for what ive found. Quite a few have made 200k, without major problems.
I pray you are correct about that 🤞
@herewegoagain404 He is. As a ford technician, I've seen many of these engines hit 200k with no real serious problems. The most ive seen are the valve cover gaskets that leak on these engines.
does it include RR Evoque 2.0? thanks
I've wondered if you could use the updated 1.5L block in place of the 1.6L block? The ones we've replaced the short blocks in with the updated part seem to be holding up really well.
I heard the ones in Europe (kuga 1.5) with manual transmission don t have as much of a problem. So I guess the turbo pressure at low rpm isn t really ok for the head gasket. In general: heat up the car slowly, with only small amounts of power requested. Once on temperature there is less stress on the gasket, also helped by the pressure in the cooling system pushing the gasket on the cilinder head. Avoid low rpm. Accelerating from low rpm immidiately results in high turbo pressure, even if you re not accelerating fast. Slowly heating up is always a good idea, with any engine...
Interesting to note, I own a 2017 Ford Focus 1.5 ecoboost with 52k km with 134kW. It hasn't had any issues yet and it's an EU spec. I always have mechanical sympathy on the car. I normally drive around 2k rpm not to stress the engine and always let it idle for approx 30s before taking off then taking it easy on the drive until optimum temps on the oil, head and coolant are reached. I wonder what else I need to do to prolong it's life but ultimately I know its fate.
I appreciate the info. I have a 2011 Ford fusion with the 2.5l inline 4 naturally aspirated engine so this video doesn't really apply to me. I just decided to check on the reliability of the EcoBoost engines. Not only did I receive clear warning signs not to purchase a Ford ecoboost engine I also got the privilege to hear Mike Tyson talk. Lol. And I seriously mean no offense by that. In my opinion he's the greatest heavyweight boxer who ever lived.
All good, I love mike Tyson.
2016 Escape 2.0. 136 K so for no issues. If it blows up tomorrow I'll be ok.. got my money's worth.. Thanks for the knowledge
OUr 2017 Escape blew the headgasket at 61,000 miles! Was just driven on the highway 90% of the time and around town the rest. Maintained at the dealer. Junk engine design.
I have a ford kuga 1.6l ecoboost it has already snapped a timing belt due to faulty tensioner
I have a 2017 escape drinking coolant. Ford should recall those witj this problem
I am not alone with this prob.
I have 203k miles and counting on my 2013 1.6 ford fusion, original motor and trans. Runs like a charm. Not experiencing any of these issues. Knock on wood.
@@thegreatecbI really hope you didn't do it.
Thanks for sharing your info. I saw a video from Ford Boss Me which showed the updated shortblock, which seems to solve the coolant leaking problem in the cilinder. I guess that would stretch the lifetime of the engine with some more miles, no?
On some of the modified cars, pushing 250-300HP on the 1.6 EB, the deck between the cylinders actually closes, blowing the gasket.
Not 100% sure, but you actually might be able see the gap closing between cylinder 1 and 2 in the video.
Cooling leak, is just one aspect, a lot of time I also get some with hole in one piston 1 in 4
@@bossautomotive7786 Yeah, I've heard of MANY guys breaking pistons who were tuned. No stock guys though.
I just had a rebuild done on my Fiesta ST after 150k km. Spark plug seized in the head, and it needed to be drilled out. Another issue was my piston rings were quite badly gunked up with sludge. Cylinder honing was stil great, and pistons were in excellent condition. It's been good since the rebuild.

Yo pop i got a 13 escape with the 1.6l turbo n im about to hit 140,000 i pray it holds up thanks for the video pop
My 1.6 has done over 200k and still fine. 😂
@davothegreat9990 update I replaced the coolant outlet a week before Christmas then the head gasket went so I got it torn apart in my shop gonna rebuild it
@Kmoney1017ful not good. Mine had the cooling upgrade during the recall. Stock. So far, I've replaced the duel mass flywheel and clutch, turbo, and timing belt over the last 20-30,000. The engine recently has just been pressure tested, all good. Love the car, though. I'll never sell it..😁
I buy the cylinder head after over heating for my ford kuga 1.6 but still low compression maybe can i buy a block also someone help me please I'm very stressed 😢
About to hit 150k in my Fiesta ST, after mods it has 225hp to the wheels and I drive it like I stole it, it has never given me any problems, I am replacing timing belt in the coming days.
Please help.l.want to replace my 1.6l. Ecoboost 2013 ford kuga with a new engine what wld be its life.😢
PLEASE Elaborate on your Mo New Head Gasket Approach??>>!!
You have me COMPLETLY DIALED IN on why I cant Replace the headgasket, and while Im there, Weld those cut / slits between the cylinder walls, Re-Zero the deck etc etc...
But Why Bro...
You have my attention, And Im Desperately trying to go down that road with you - But I dont wanna over-step..
Thanks Brother
Just did a motor swap on a 15’ escape titanium 1.6L at work. Bought the replacement motor from LKQ. Swapped the motor over and had the same probably with the new; used one. To answer a bunch of people questions regarding the topic of filling in the slot that cut out on the deck, it is possible to weld that slot shit and milk it down at a machine shop but I wouldn’t do that unless you’re running open deck block supports to strengthen it up. Honda has open deck designs on some of their engines without all that fancy slotting of the block, if you ask me it is pointless….
In Europe some countries got the MK3 Focus with 2 litre N/A engine, which is reliable.
Ecoboost drives great till it fails like mine at 80K (2017 1.5T)
2014 ford focus st, 195000 miles, no major engine issues. I do need to replace my spark plugs and ignition coils due to possible misfires. Any issues I had with the car was due to mr being drunk lol
The slit in between the cylinders is really dumb, main reason to go for a block that has new cylinder sleeves without the slit in between, that's what I'm gonna be doing, but to call them complete trash is dumb, I'm running 350 hp in a stock 1.6 block for a while now, inspected the head gasket and cylinder walls couple times with a bore scope, and it's still running perfectly, no extreme oil or coolant usage, but I know it's not gonna be forever hence why I'm planning to get a closed deck, resleved long block from puma speed, those also are a lot more rev happy and should hopefully let it run for another 100k miles without issues
Hello ,with european ford mondeo , 1.6 ecoboost, I had the same problem with a decrease in the coolant level since last June, and the quantity increases over time, in December I used an abro super seat product with good results, today after more than 11k miles, the problem is again, what is it in your opinion, and the solutions proposed, thank you
Mine 2013 escape just went ,,,white smoke ,,,transmission failure 2 yrs ago ,,,sold it for $1500,,,,looked like new but it was shot
is there a better gen engine to drop in?
mine is a 2013 focus st 167k 5k oil changes always full no coolant loss....mine is a 2.0
I heard that the later blocks had this issue but the older ones didn't have this issue. Mines a 2014 1.6L is mine free from this issue?
i have a 1.6 with 160 hp in a Ford S-max, i have done 170000 kilometers wich is ... i dont know how many seagulls per square-foot or wahtever unit you use in the US.
anyway, engine runs smooth, it is maintained properly, i use the right oil (5w20).. no problems whatsoever.
maybe if you tune it above 300 hp, you get these problems?
I own a 2013 that my wife drives and the engine has 168,000 miles on the original 1.6 ecoboost and the factory transmission.
That’s great you don’t see too many.
189000 on my 2014 1.6 ecoboosted Escape 👍
What dobyou think of the new ford territory 1.8 gtdi turbo
Great video!! Thanks!
I have 2016 ford escape eco boost car has 150k miles drives good
I was looking at buying a used car for myself and saw a 2013 Ford Fusion S. It has 1.6L 4cyl and 137km. I only want a car to last me about 5-6 years and was wondering if this car is too risky to buy it.
It depends, how much are you driving everyday
@@bossautomotive7786 I am just driving into town everyday for work and the drive is 25 minutes there and back.
I have a 1.6 with 106K miles. The timing belt is supposed to get replaced around 110K miles. So this indicates doing that would be wasted money. I guess I'm just going to drive it till it drops.
You guys forgot to mention ecoboost 2.0 engine till 2016 single scroll quote reliable and they are with closed deck which can handle more HP ,which i cannot say about twin scroll 2.0 ecoboost
The comment I been looking for 🫵🏻👍🏻 2017 2.0 ecoboost until late 2019 they used the passages between cilinders
Hello mate just need a tip on how to deal with a 1.6 ecoboost it's got a sporadic puff of smoke for about a mile when driving and engine service warning then stops smoking like nothing ever happened. It's got an air systems leak code
What the code, whats the color of the smoke. Maybe bad turbo, valve seals
I should have find your video before... Bought 2018 ford mondeo 1.5 ecoboost and it was already messed up. It drives normaly on 110k miles, you wouldnt see a problem. But the cooling liquid was going missing, so I put the car in ford shop to check if any animal didint bite some hole in pipes. They told me there is this problem on cylinder nr 2... Now i dunno what to do. Repair? It will happen again, no? What can happen if I drive it further?
It’s just going to get worse.
How you feel on the 2.7 sport fusion engine? Better option to go with?
Yes, the 2.7 is a solid engine, arguably the best ecoboost engine even over the 3.5
True for 2.3 liters too??
I disagree, you can re-sleeve the block and have the gap closed, which should strengthen it for good. It's a minor, shallow groove which was a poor choice for added cooling. But whether or not its worth the cost is a different story.
You can buy a new short block from ford. I have try all options. Not only cooling leak, a lot of time I get A hole in one of the pistons.
@@bossautomotive7786 Yeah, but buying a new block, especially in my region, costs more than an engine rebuild. You can get forged pistons, rods, race bearings, and a cylinder head overhaul kit for less than the price of the block .
Understood,
Beofre i built mine i just got that gap welded 0 problems and problem solved
You can not resleeve these blocks. Ford has a revised block where that area between the cylinders is solid and a hole is drilled through below where the groove used to be. The cross flow is critical to keeping the entire cylinder bore cool. There’s a reason the groove is there, but it was a poor design, but the revised setup is better.
No good. I’m having this antifreeze issue. No white smoke. No warning codes and it’s driving fine. I am having decent pooling of antifreeze on the right side of the engine but a couple of hoses. What worries me is that I’m not dripping any coolant onto the ground and I’m loosing too much coolant for what the pooling is showing. I’m having to fill my coolant once a week now. Not a full fill but a top off bc then low coolant code goes off. Any thought gang? Is the the dreaded block issue or something manageable like the coolant outlet flange? My initial thought was that flange was the issue… but I’m loosing a lot of antifreeze for nothing to be dripping on the ground? Where’s it all going…
Pressure test the system. If it's dripping somewhere and burning off you'll never notice it. Pressure test it cool, leave it over night.if no visible leaks and pressure is lost pull the plugs and check in each cylinder. "It's going somwhere"...
Hoses or reservoir tank.
@@davothegreat9990 100% right. It was my hoses. Replaced two about 3 months ago. All is good now. Thank you for replying.
I have a 2015 Ford Escape Titanium Eco-Boost 1.6, And there’s smoke that comes out the engine after 15 minutes of using the vehicle and I also keep adding anti-coolant every 4 days because the level goes down. What you think it might be?
Head gasket mostly deteriorating.
Just Changed The “Heater Hose” And No More Leak, I Will Be Looking Into The Head Gasket. How Ofter Does It Need To Be Replaced?
Ford has problems only with blocks that has an open deck. There is not enough material between cylinders, and that leads to problems with head gasket.
2.0 EB from ST has closed deck desing, and if you will not touch it with any tune, it will be reliable for many miles.

what happens if i close the hole/slot between the cylinders?
Potentially overheating of the cylinder sleeve which could lead to cracks forming

I cant say for sure, mostly not original engine, it’s not too rare to see those miles on the newer eco-boost

hi, is it really that bad? because it's the first time I'm hearing about this. in my case it's a 2014 Fiesta ST, 1.6l single turbo. is there anything easy you can do to prevent serious dmg to the block? like switching to a stronger head gasket or running some special oil or coolant? or does this not apply to the european market?
Athena makes an upgraded headgasket - ARP makes studs too. Just run your car till it pops and do the upgrades.
This guy is wack, the 1.6 is EXTREAMLY reliable. People are getting deep into the 200k range these days. Not doing maintenance and lugging (LSPI) these motors is what pops them.
@@jvepps 174k miles here but I'm having both of these problems. I'm going to fix the turbo because the car jumps RPMs when I go to step on it on a hill.
2014 fiesta st owner here from new. 200k, no major issues so far😊. Focus ST I've heard of problems, not much from the Fiesta ST. Some turbo or DUEL mass fly wheel replacements that's about it after high milage. All good for me so far!!

hi...mi ford escape engine died at 146000...what other engine can i put there ????
I would get a new short block from ford.
i have 2.0 ecoboost 240HP
how long it will last me?
You be lucky to get 130k,
I have one. Serviced accordingly. Hope to see it pass 130k soon. I will update here if it does
The 1.6 is the strongest out of the ecoboost range. Yes they have flaws, like any engine.
Looked after and driven PROPERLY and you won’t have the issues. I’ve done over 20k miles a year for many years on 2 modded 1.6 and never missed a beat.
There is no need to worry any owners. 1.0 ecoboost is obviously not a suitable engine for anything over a fiesta. Many mod them too far which leads to this.
Like any engine, if you don’t maintain it, it will break.
21k miles on my ST with OTS tune and ended up with 20psi in cylinder 4. Ford replaced under warranty with a remanufactured engine.
@@jefffather4663 not the 1st time I’ve heard an st blow with that tune. Both mine and the misses has over 100k. Original clutch and engine and mines running 240hp for 60k miles
reshoot the video w/o junk music
I am very much interested in buying used Focus ST with 2.0 Ecoboost engine unmodified. But after seeing this video I am very much in doubt that it is not smart decision. I planned to drive the car normally most of the time, maintain it regularly and keep it for around 60k miles. However, I must admit that now I am freaky concerned that it is very stupid decision to buy this car.
How about Fords with diesel engines? Are they a bit better designed?
The funy thing is that few years ago they named Fords Ecoboost engine the engine of the year here in Europe. How the hell can you give this award to an engine that wasn't tested at least 100k miles? I just knew from the beginning that that bullshit award is pure marketing.
I thnik I will just stick to the Japanese cars...
I just bought One
Keep an eye on your antifreeze level
@@bossautomotive7786 It has a bad motor from this issue, I was going to swap motor, or rebuild it, since I watched your video, I now regret buying it. I will swap motor, and sell it tho.
Sell it. Now.
You forget to say it's only years 2015-2018
I have a 2012 Focus with the 1.6 ecoboost. Do you mean it's not concerned?
Can I just keep a close eye on coolant levels and drive this SOB? LMAO Im having both the turbo and anti freeze issue
my car has 170k and I'm a full time student who will not have a car payment.
Toyota is still replacing frames free of cost to owners of 2003 Tundras and Tacomas but Ford says "screw you" and won't fix your 2017 Ecoboost with only 60,000 miles. This is why I never buy Ford for myself.
Lol, love Toyota, I am going to be doing a engine breakdown on. 2012 Camry with 300k miy
@@bossautomotive7786 Only issue I've had on a Toyota I owned over 25 years of owning Toyota was the 2AZ-FE on a 2008 Rav4 started burning oil around 160,000 miles. Rebuild the entire engine for under $1,000 in OEM parts, now at 200,000+ miles it runs like a new engine still.
Turned it off the background music is too loud
Stil learning how to edit videos
BS I have 140k miles and it still runs like it did brand new
So the solution is: Do not buy a vehicle with a Ford 1.6L, 1.5L, 2.0L Got it. Too bad I already have an Escape with a 1.5L at 100k miles and it started throwing blue smoke at startup after an oil change when the garage put in too much oil.. FFS thanks for the non help solution vid
dislike for music😡
😂😂
Do not buy one of these Fords with these engines.
They’re trash
These engines are poorly designed and manufactured even worse. Ive had one and it gave me nightmares. I go with Japanese and never sorry.
Ford ecoboost engines are really bad.
Yes is true but I have one of them and I need to by engine now . At my county don’t have . Please if you can found send me your Instagram to talk
