- Rio Ferdinand, a centre back blessed with a lot of technique, skills & flair as well as physical attribute. He's a complete centre back in his generation. He's very good in everything, he's comfortable on the ball, he can pass the ball, he can tackle, read the game very well, he can win aerial duel even against a strong player like Didier Drogba & he is gifted with incredible pace.
Towards years of 2012, he started to lose his pace, but it doesn't stop him to be a good centre back as he is an intelligent defender. He was still managed to get himself into PFA team of the year in 2012/2013.

Aggression, Strength, tackling and passing are four most important traits for a great defender imo and he had them all and even more... Rio was class 👌

Yeah I totally agree with you about Rio, even though I'm a Liverpool fan I really love him . But VVD has all of these with great footballing ability as the pundit said the only thing I am waiting in order to say he is best ever 2-3 years with this level.

Ferdinand was never about aggression and strength. Yes, he had them, but his strongest weapon was his tactical awareness. How he read the game, how he intercept the ball. Aggression and strength belong to Vidic. If you don't know that simple and very well known fact, then you just made things up and you didn't really follow football back then.
It's almost like saying that Xavi was about dribbling skill and Iniesta was about playmaking skill.
You forgot to mention awareness and heading ability.
My favourite british player of all time. So much power, so much class, so much style and so much drive. What a beast! Plus: he even looks like buffed Snoop Dogg, I mean... Too damn cool. A true legend!

I'm Italian, but still Rio will be my favorite defender of his generation. I mean Cannavaro and Nesta were out of this world, Rio was a monster.

Best defender in the prem history when you take all aspects into account! I remember Bellamy burning him from the halfway line and at that point I knew he was finished at elite level. I see him play against the greats of that era in the biggest of matches, especially at club level. Rio never failed to disappoint👊.
Intelligence, toughness, fitness, a superb reader of the game, brilliant player. As damned good at his job as it gets.

As much as I like VVD.. i think he is class.. some players like Sergio ramos I rate more.. rio and ramos are in the legend elite level becuase of doing it so many years..

0:40 - tell me why I was confident that Rio would stop an entire RONALDINHO in a one-on-one situation. No defender has given me confidence like him. Even Vida sometimes, I worried when players dribbled at him. With Rio, I always had confidence that he would NEVER give away a foul and that he would always get the ball. Yes, even against Messi! Always stayed on his feet and made the tackle at the right time, unlike some of our current defenders that just jockey and let the striker shoot. I hope Bailly can fill his boots and then Maguire can fill Vidic’s boots.

You could talk about all maldini,nesta,vidic,terry.....etc but i genuinely rio was a class apart a real rolls royce of a defender does things so differently.....tackles like a rolls royce gets the ball like a rolls royce,....his style of play was so ahead of its time.....and oozing confidence when he wore that white suit to sign for man utd .....says all about him....
He had it all. First touch. Close control. Composure.
But first things first, he was an absolute rock in defense. Dominant in the air and brilliant in one on ones. It's all well and good being slick with the ball, but if you can't win your battles and protect your keeper, it's all for nothing.
That's what defenders today forget. That their first job is to defend.
They don't make em like Rio anymore.

i think what’s important to note here is not only the quality of his defensive abilities, but also the people he’s defending against. i mean from 2 minutes in, you already see him against the likes of ronaldinho, david villa, fernando torres, henry, anelka, suarez and joe cole.

he was so ahead of his time in terms of passing and ball control, his ball technique is so underrated.... and most importantly he doesnt hide when his team needs him the most., unlike some specific liverpool defender who had had a good 1 season. let the liverpool guy perform at this level for a decade consistently then we'll talk

In this modern football, i think ferdinand can play very well. He's comfort with the ball, he also can pass n switch play. His speed just good for CB and his strenght is one of the atribut he has.
