Shesez I agree. I have a later release of Buzz (I think the line came out somewhere between the first and second movie) that is basically a carbon copy of the original '95 Buzz and his head sculpt looks MUCH more screen accurate than the current one in my opinion.
I agree, even when it comes to build quality. We recently bought my son his 2nd buzz in less than a year cuz the head fell off the first one lol. The swivel feature makes it less rigid, its literally a fine threaded screw the width of the tip of a pen, and less than a 1/4 inch long

Yeah, the addition of caps to the screws is a MOST frustrating point for customizing. I encountered that on an electronic "Nightmare Moon" from MLP. I hate the fact that her wings are transparent purple, but Hasbro cheaped out with RED LEDs. I was going to swap purple ones in there instead, buuut... looks like I have to drill into it now. With this Buzz, were i to get him, i would HAVE to take him apart, recast the wings in trans purple, and reassemble him. In this case, aside from me not wanting a Buzz Lightyear figure and pretty much hating Disney, the inability to easily customize him would be a deal-breaker.
Jinzo Clash Yeah, Disney does a Lot of screwups recently, looking in your direction Starwars 8. But for me it is kind of nostalgic to see the old lightyear wich i had as a child. MLP, never cared much about it but i hate the sexualization that is happening to the kids show by the weird parts of the brony community. After all i want to keep my daughter save.

I have the 1995 one 😍 in Germany it was only available in disney Toy stores. So my parents drove 4 hours to get me woody ans buzz for my birthday. Love them 😀
I watched Toy Story 2 when it came out in 1999.. I was 6 years old! Since I watched it for the first time I fell in love with the toys. The brilliant thing is watching this movie while being so young it made me believe it's true. This made the movie from being great to being magical. Since then I've probably watched this particular movie(toy story 2) hundreds of times on VHS. Now I'm 24 and I was visiting my little sister's room a week ago when i saw a buzz figure.. It brought to me so many memories back. I just spent 50$ to get all 3 movies in bluray and the ToyStory 3 game which I'm planning on playing with my little sis! Yesterday was Saturday night and I decided to dedicate the day to my childhood! I watched the first two movies and I was surprised I was still remembering all the lines from the characters. Realising it has been probably 14years since the last time I watched the movie.. to watch it back now and still get that same feeling. Amazing. I feel blessed for that random day back in '99 when my uncle visited us and brought with him a VHS cassette that was gonna define my childhood in so many ways and it would still have such a strong impact on me many many years later...

I actually have one of the old Buzz’s. Mine is from the early 2000s when I went to Disney World in 2003. He still works great. I always tried to take care of my toys and it shows with my Buzz and Woody. They still talk to each other and work great. My Buzz is actually different than both of these models. Mine has a few different phrases and buttons. My Buzz has a button on his belt and a button on his booster pack. Mine also has a spot on his arm for his communicator. And the laser is different. It blinks, makes a powering up sound, then fires a laser for a few seconds. Mine also has the same wings as the old Buzz. I think the version is my personal favorite. They are two of my most prized possessions. I have a lot of great memories with them.
The wings are all that mattered to me in this video. I remember when I was a child, I never liked how his wings were so small. Too bad I can't be a kid now, I'd be so happy! Haha

My grandma use to take me and my brother to KB toys at the mall ALL THE TIME. My brother had Buzz and Woody. I think it’s still in a closet somewhere at my parents. I must find it!! There is also a photo from the 90’s of my brother with Woody’s hat and accessories and me wearing them and not fitting. Lmao

I love all the improvements made in the 2016 edition, but the original is very nostalgic for me. Wish I had my original still, but at least I've still got the 2016 version and that old Rescue Pack Buzz from Hasbro. Edit: I've just realized that the off-white Buzz that comes in a two-pack with Zurg is likely a reference to the older colors.
For anyone who doesn't know: the Buzz Lightyear model didn't change for YEARS. I got a new one the year Santa Clause 2 came out at the Disney Store, and it was the exact same model as 95.
Ah this brings me memories from the good times. Back when I was a kid my uncles made me the entire toy story cast out of wood for my birthday and did a whole play with them just for me and my fellow 5 year old friends, we had borrow my brother's buzz because he already had one so it would be less work. I ended up losing those toys, only my brother's Buzz still remains, we even had tl fix his head with ductape because of time. I'll never forget my time with my toys, it was truly magical being a kid.
I agree that the purple and gray colors were not faded or darkened over time. I remember thinking the purple was a tad too dark when I got mine in 1995. The white part of the suit was also slightly gray from my memory also. Although I prefer the face of the 1995 version, the improvements to the 2016 version are pretty nice (those movie inaccuracies were rather disappointing as a kid). My friend had a silver version of the 1995 Buzz, and we traded them for a night or weekend once to see which one we liked more.
Oh my, I remember owning one of these back in 1995. I begged my father for it for soooooo long and he told me 'if you want it, you must earn it'. I studied really hard and got an A in three subjects (which is very good considering I was a very stupid kid). And then, as you guess it, I got this for my birthday. Anyway... RIP Dad. I remember getting the Woody and Buzz Lightyear toys when I was younger; at the time, I had a fascination of collecting Toy Story toys as they are seen in the movies. The Buzz Lightyear I got was the 2016 Buzz, and I also got a relatively recent version of Woody (this version still had the pull string on the back). I think seeing this video regained my interest in the Toy Story franchise (particularly during Pixar's independent years).
Now that I think about it... I never should have broken my Buzz Lightyear toys when I was a little kid, but at least I'm repairing one of those Buzz that survived and it's a way of redeeming myself for breaking it (And also because of the Hype I have for the movie of Lightyear).
You forgot some important stuff! 2016 buzz has karate chop action, 1995 buzz glows in the dark while this 2016 version does not! And the replica buzz made by Thinkway has wings with the transparent purple that you are talking about!
How hard could it have been to make a replica toy out of a literal toy character? They had access to the sound files and everything. But they didn't choose to make the toy movie accurate.
Yeah, I was just old enough when I got it to feel like there is some value in keeping the box in decent condition. Actually though, I think it looks a little nicer on the video and then it is in real life. Still, I’m glad I kept it as a kid :-) thanks for watching!
Omg There’s 2 or 3 new versions out this year! One the head turns while he talks (which is meh) and another one that’s the same without the head turning, but the blue button in the front panel is El Buzzo! Lol so good lol I used to have the 95 one and the chrome/black one the chrome/black one had the panel that opened up on his wrist and a button that made him say “Buzz lightyear to star command. Come in star command” And the helmet lit up when he spoke. Looking forward to your review

I remember I had a buzz light year in my childhood (I don’t know for sure if it was exactly the 1995 or another one around the time of toy story 2, but I do remember the screw placement and the wings popping out like that). I still don’t know where he went to this day. Perhaps he snuck away when I wasn’t looking and went back to Andy?
While I haven’t kept it in good shape I still own a full size Buzz and Woody from when the original released in 1995. Favorite toys as a kid by a long shot!
Today is Jan 31st, 2018, I am 24 years old. I would still buy this if I wasn’t already backed up with toys I need to buy. I’m currently in the process of acquiring Transformers and Power Rangers toys. Personally, I love both of these Buzz’s, but the newer one is definitely superior. It’s just like with the Masterpiece Optimus Prime compared to the old one, or like the Soul of Chogokin Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Megazord, compared to the old one. I love the old ones for nostalgic reasons. But the newer ones are far more superior with their modernized and technologically advanced updates.

Like, somehow, the playmobil ecto-1 blew my mind with how great of a Toy it is (it almost seems too good to have been designed by playmobil) but the Kenner version from the 80’s will always have a special place in my heart. I remember owning three of the early Toy Story toys as a kid (Buzz, Woody, and Slinky); I know my Buzz wasn't the 1995 version because not only did it have an opening wrist communicator, it also had this thing that attached to the jetpack (I have no idea what it was supposed to be). I was an absolute Toy Story freak as a kid.
10:48 I'm pretty sure that might just be an animation error, or a performance saving choice. You have to remember that each frame of Toy Story 1 took at least half a day to render, with 24 frames per second, for roughly 1 hour and 30 minutes. They may have just had it be slightly opaque to hide some lower resolution textures, that way it saved on resources and made the wings look more realistic with what little technology they had

Take it from someone who studies technology and rendering processes in his spare time, while these days something like Toy Story CAN be rendered at 30 FPS in a game format (kingdom hearts 3 for example), back then, it was much more expensive. To be honest, I'd estimate that some of their animation computers might've actually fried themselves while rendering frames for the movie. It's that time period's equivalent to something like CineBench, which is a benchmarking tool for PCs that stretch your hardware to the absoloute limits. The only downside is that, from my experience, it CAN and WILL fry your graphics processor if you don't have a decent cooling solution. And on top of all that, in the first movie, there ARE other areas where textures are lower resolution to save on resources. The most obvious being the Pizza planet truck. Although oddly enough, if Buzzes wings being semi transparent IS an unintentional side effect of an optimization process, then it's odd that the window Woody was climbing through isn't very opaque. It could just be that they didn't want a sticker on the window being opaque as well and decided to say "screw it" when they thought it wasn't possible with their current technology, or maybe only a certain number of opaque items could be in a scene at a time and they had Buzzes model loaded in 24/7 to save on loading times, who knows.

Sure he can make updates and and moderations to the portrait, but the knowledge of knowing that is isn't the original will ruin it, it's impossible to write your name and write it again identically
The 2016 one is more accurate to the Buzz in the original Toy Story. It has all the features like the helmet flip, wrist gadgets, blinking laser and long wings that light up. The only thing the 2016 version lacks is the glowing in the dark but then the 1995 version obviously doesn't do that either. I will admit that the 1995 model has a far better face, but from a objective standpoint the 2016 Buzz is objectively the better representation of Toy Story (1995)
How are you going to buy a buzz for your kid today if they should stop recreating buzz? It's not 1995 anymore and the one this guy has with its original packaging must cost a lot on eBay as that would be rare now.
MY CHILDHOOD! 1995 Woody and Buzz for Christmas... I STILL HAVE WOODY! I even wrote 'ANDY' on their foot (and my name on the other!) because even as a kid, I was a nut for screen accuracy. The wings bothered me and I HATED the lack of wrist communicator. It chewed me up so bad! Man, it's like I'm a kid again seeing this! I was forced to give away my Buzz by my mum when I grew up a little and some kids from church (twins) were obsessed with the film, but couldn't afford the toys. There's a little part of me that never forgave her for that... At least I got to keep woody. I never even lost his hat! His cow-skin jacket and even his pullstring disappeared over time, but I made sure he never ever lost his hat...
I have so many memories from the 1995 Buzz Lightyear. I was either 8 or 9 and I was jealous of my brother getting this action figure. I do not know why it bothered me so much at that age about the inaccuracies of the toy versus the movies. The lack of the green and purple colors on the hands bothered me and I hated how short the wings were. I hated the lack of “Space Ranger” written on the chest. When I got a miniature version of the toy, it had all the same issues and I tried to fix it with a permanent marker. It did not turn out so well. The design they made in 1995 contributed to my perfectionist OCD in my youth to my adulthood.
I used to have a Buzz really similar to the 1995 Buzz expect you didn't take the wings out by the big red button on the front you took it out by a small button on the bottom of his jet pack, and one screw on his head was gone so I could kind of take his head off, and I have a special memory with that Buzz, when I was 5 there was a full moon, and I went out to my front porch and threw him to the moon and said "To infinity and beyond!" And he crashed and his jetpack fell off. Then when I was 6 I got the Toy Story collection Buzz and I've had that one ever since, and half of that Buzz's leg came of the first day I got it.

I love all the improvements made in the 2016 edition, but the original is very nostalgic for me. Wish I had my original still, but at least I've still got the 2016 version and that old Rescue Pack Buzz from Hasbro.
Edit: I've just realized that the off-white Buzz that comes in a two-pack with Zurg is likely a reference to the older colors.

For anyone who doesn't know: the Buzz Lightyear model didn't change for YEARS. I got a new one the year Santa Clause 2 came out at the Disney Store, and it was the exact same model as 95.
I still have my original Buzz Lightyear. Those sound effects really took me back lol

Ah this brings me memories from the good times. Back when I was a kid my uncles made me the entire toy story cast out of wood for my birthday and did a whole play with them just for me and my fellow 5 year old friends, we had borrow my brother's buzz because he already had one so it would be less work. I ended up losing those toys, only my brother's Buzz still remains, we even had tl fix his head with ductape because of time. I'll never forget my time with my toys, it was truly magical being a kid.

I agree that the purple and gray colors were not faded or darkened over time. I remember thinking the purple was a tad too dark when I got mine in 1995. The white part of the suit was also slightly gray from my memory also. Although I prefer the face of the 1995 version, the improvements to the 2016 version are pretty nice (those movie inaccuracies were rather disappointing as a kid).
My friend had a silver version of the 1995 Buzz, and we traded them for a night or weekend once to see which one we liked more.

Oh my, I remember owning one of these back in 1995. I begged my father for it for soooooo long and he told me 'if you want it, you must earn it'. I studied really hard and got an A in three subjects (which is very good considering I was a very stupid kid). And then, as you guess it, I got this for my birthday.

I remember getting the Woody and Buzz Lightyear toys when I was younger; at the time, I had a fascination of collecting Toy Story toys as they are seen in the movies. The Buzz Lightyear I got was the 2016 Buzz, and I also got a relatively recent version of Woody (this version still had the pull string on the back). I think seeing this video regained my interest in the Toy Story franchise (particularly during Pixar's independent years).

Now that I think about it... I never should have broken my Buzz Lightyear toys when I was a little kid, but at least I'm repairing one of those Buzz that survived and it's a way of redeeming myself for breaking it (And also because of the Hype I have for the movie of Lightyear).

You forgot some important stuff! 2016 buzz has karate chop action, 1995 buzz glows in the dark while this 2016 version does not! And the replica buzz made by Thinkway has wings with the transparent purple that you are talking about!
How hard could it have been to make a replica toy out of a literal toy character? They had access to the sound files and everything. But they didn't choose to make the toy movie accurate.

Yeah, I was just old enough when I got it to feel like there is some value in keeping the box in decent condition. Actually though, I think it looks a little nicer on the video and then it is in real life. Still, I’m glad I kept it as a kid :-) thanks for watching!

There’s 2 or 3 new versions out this year! One the head turns while he talks (which is meh) and another one that’s the same without the head turning, but the blue button in the front panel is El Buzzo! Lol so good lol
I used to have the 95 one and the chrome/black one the chrome/black one had the panel that opened up on his wrist and a button that made him say “Buzz lightyear to star command. Come in star command”
And the helmet lit up when he spoke.

I remember I had a buzz light year in my childhood (I don’t know for sure if it was exactly the 1995 or another one around the time of toy story 2, but I do remember the screw placement and the wings popping out like that). I still don’t know where he went to this day. Perhaps he snuck away when I wasn’t looking and went back to Andy?

Today is Jan 31st, 2018, I am 24 years old. I would still buy this if I wasn’t already backed up with toys I need to buy. I’m currently in the process of acquiring Transformers and Power Rangers toys. Personally, I love both of these Buzz’s, but the newer one is definitely superior. It’s just like with the Masterpiece Optimus Prime compared to the old one, or like the Soul of Chogokin Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Megazord, compared to the old one. I love the old ones for nostalgic reasons. But the newer ones are far more superior with their modernized and technologically advanced updates.
This is a great way to look at it! I agree completely. Like, somehow, the playmobil ecto-1 blew my mind with how great of a Toy it is (it almost seems too good to have been designed by playmobil) but the Kenner version from the 80’s will always have a special place in my heart. I remember owning three of the early Toy Story toys as a kid (Buzz, Woody, and Slinky); I know my Buzz wasn't the 1995 version because not only did it have an opening wrist communicator, it also had this thing that attached to the jetpack (I have no idea what it was supposed to be). I was an absolute Toy Story freak as a kid.
IMO the first buzz lightyear has a better box and the face sculpt is better. i'd like to swap the heads on them and then it'd be better. :P

10:48 I'm pretty sure that might just be an animation error, or a performance saving choice. You have to remember that each frame of Toy Story 1 took at least half a day to render, with 24 frames per second, for roughly 1 hour and 30 minutes. They may have just had it be slightly opaque to hide some lower resolution textures, that way it saved on resources and made the wings look more realistic with what little technology they had

Take it from someone who studies technology and rendering processes in his spare time, while these days something like Toy Story CAN be rendered at 30 FPS in a game format (kingdom hearts 3 for example), back then, it was much more expensive. To be honest, I'd estimate that some of their animation computers might've actually fried themselves while rendering frames for the movie. It's that time period's equivalent to something like CineBench, which is a benchmarking tool for PCs that stretch your hardware to the absoloute limits. The only downside is that, from my experience, it CAN and WILL fry your graphics processor if you don't have a decent cooling solution. And on top of all that, in the first movie, there ARE other areas where textures are lower resolution to save on resources. The most obvious being the Pizza planet truck. Although oddly enough, if Buzzes wings being semi transparent IS an unintentional side effect of an optimization process, then it's odd that the window Woody was climbing through isn't very opaque. It could just be that they didn't want a sticker on the window being opaque as well and decided to say "screw it" when they thought it wasn't possible with their current technology, or maybe only a certain number of opaque items could be in a scene at a time and they had Buzzes model loaded in 24/7 to save on loading times, who knows.

thomas fan 54 I wouldn't say the 2016 one is horrible, it's a good attempt to recreate the classic buzz lightyear figure. But it's one of those recreations that seem mediocre compared to the classic one. It's like Leanardo de Vinci trying to repaint the monelisa
Sure he can make updates and and moderations to the portrait, but the knowledge of knowing that is isn't the original will ruin it, it's impossible to write your name and write it again identically
The 2016 one is more accurate to the Buzz in the original Toy Story. It has all the features like the helmet flip, wrist gadgets, blinking laser and long wings that light up. The only thing the 2016 version lacks is the glowing in the dark but then the 1995 version obviously doesn't do that either. I will admit that the 1995 model has a far better face, but from a objective standpoint the 2016 Buzz is objectively the better representation of Toy Story (1995)

How are you going to buy a buzz for your kid today if they should stop recreating buzz? It's not 1995 anymore and the one this guy has with its original packaging must cost a lot on eBay as that would be rare now.

MY CHILDHOOD! 1995 Woody and Buzz for Christmas... I STILL HAVE WOODY! I even wrote 'ANDY' on their foot (and my name on the other!) because even as a kid, I was a nut for screen accuracy. The wings bothered me and I HATED the lack of wrist communicator. It chewed me up so bad! Man, it's like I'm a kid again seeing this! I was forced to give away my Buzz by my mum when I grew up a little and some kids from church (twins) were obsessed with the film, but couldn't afford the toys. There's a little part of me that never forgave her for that... At least I got to keep woody. I never even lost his hat! His cow-skin jacket and even his pullstring disappeared over time, but I made sure he never ever lost his hat...
You should compare the toy story “signature collection” Buzz Lightyear to the original. There’s huge differences there

I have so many memories from the 1995 Buzz Lightyear. I was either 8 or 9 and I was jealous of my brother getting this action figure. I do not know why it bothered me so much at that age about the inaccuracies of the toy versus the movies. The lack of the green and purple colors on the hands bothered me and I hated how short the wings were. I hated the lack of “Space Ranger” written on the chest. When I got a miniature version of the toy, it had all the same issues and I tried to fix it with a permanent marker. It did not turn out so well. The design they made in 1995 contributed to my perfectionist OCD in my youth to my adulthood.

I used to have a Buzz really similar to the 1995 Buzz expect you didn't take the wings out by the big red button on the front you took it out by a small button on the bottom of his jet pack, and one screw on his head was gone so I could kind of take his head off, and I have a special memory with that Buzz, when I was 5 there was a full moon, and I went out to my front porch and threw him to the moon and said "To infinity and beyond!" And he crashed and his jetpack fell off. Then when I was 6 I got the Toy Story collection Buzz and I've had that one ever since, and half of that Buzz's leg came of the first day I got it.
