storytime: scary hotel incident in London, wild 24 hours…. shadow & schmooze

  • If you want an update on the hotel situation, I pinned a comment. The lack of accountability and response on behalf of Radisson Red LHR (still to this date) has been shocking. After going back and forth with Chase and booking.com for about 10 days since leaving the 14th, I finally got a partial refund from booking, but no response from hotel, and booking is also not able to reach the hotel. I’ve been updating on twitter and pinned a comment on that video. Opened a case with corporate Radisson. Be careful and be aware, could've been a lot worse & wouldn't want anything to happen to any of you. There are lots of news stories right now about s*xual as*aults and tra*ficking happening in big well-known hotel chains. xx

March 24 update: I have still not received any refund or update from Radisson or Booking.com. I opened the case with booking.com the day I left the hotel on March 14, waited 5 business days as they said, never heard back, the case was closed, went on twitter for help, and just got this response: twitter.com/taylorwynn/status/1639257691767058432?s=20
It's not even about the monetary refund at this point but the morals of it all and being held accountable/responsible and owning up to your mistakes. Hundreds of 1 star google reviews are no longer showing up, so they're fully aware of the issue and are now even further actively ignoring it. I have heard nothing from them. I’ve tried to dispute the charge 3 times with chase, who says they need written approval from booking.com, which they won’t give because they’re waiting to hear from the hotel. Zero checks and balances here. Again, it’s not even about the refund at this point it’s about accountability and doing the right thing so something like this doesn’t happen again, which both booking, and the hotel are not doing.
    March 25 update: twitter.com/taylorwynn/status/1639649060972818432?s=46&t=FSOXdJOq-JidnyWanpRlGg
March 30 update: It's now been over 5 days since I opened the case with corporate radisson (they said 3-5 days) and they still haven't heard anything back from the LHR hotel. Ridiculous.

I went on yesterday when there were literally hundreds of reviews from your viewers (just hours after you posted this video). The fact that they went and deleted them all speaks volumes. In an attempt to not look bad, they made themselves look even sketchier. Shame on them

As a flight attendant that stays in hotels all over the world, situations like this are always on my mind. I'm sorry that you went through this. It's terrifying.
You said you had nothing to use as a weapon, but as a combat instructor once told me: 'anything can be a weapon'.
-A face full of boiling water from a tea kettle: weapon
-Alcohol based hand sanitizer to the eyes: weapon
-A free standing lamp, an iron (even better if it's hot), a metal comb with a sharp end, a metal nail file, your own nails and teeth: all weapons
If you can open your window and scream for help, do it.
Don't hesitate to cause a huge scene and don't be afraid to be as violent as possible and cause an intruder as much physical injury as possible.
And ALWAYS have the number and address for your embassy in your phone. If your situation is that serious and you have exhausted all avenues of help, call your local embassy and report what is happening. Hopefully, they will be able to light a fire under the police and get you some help.
And really, you should try to file a report of what happened with the American embassy in London anyway. Nothing may come of it, but you never know.

@@63Lsp thank you for saying this. I’m sure their comment was not ill-intended, but it is important to be mindful of how we support one another after an event like this. It’s easy to do a “should’ve, would’ve, could’ve” after the fact or outside of the threatening situation when the body and brain is functioning normally. Our nervous systems act on perceived threat. It functions quickly and non-verbally unlike the other parts of our brain, so it can’t be reasoned with through words and acts very quickly in an effort to keep us alive. Most importantly, it did its job and was effective for Taylor. She did a great job fighting to keep herself safe. She is very brave and kind to share this experience in an effort to help others.

A drunk guy came to my door at 11:30 at night saying my car was being broken into and he wanted to help me. I looked out the window and my car was there and no one was around. He got irate and violent and tried to break down the door. The important thing to note is these people will try to distract you to open the door. Never open the door, just like Taylor did not. Exactly what I was thinking. Definitely the staff - no one was answering and one didn't seem concerned when he answered. I bet security footage was checked and they saw them, therefore do not want to respond in any way. I really wish in a perfect world, a lawyer could represent Taylor and get a police order for the security footage. They knew a female, by herself, was in that room - they had access to the information for her. It makes the absolute most sense.

I'm not sure if anyone else has mentioned this (and excuse me if I'm in the wrong for implying this, I listened to this while at work so my focus wasn't 100%) but I am suspicious that maybe the men might have been the on-duty staff. It might be easy for them to figure out who was in what rooms and could scope out for a solo female traveler. It just does not sit right when I think about how there hasn't been any type of resolution to this event that it might be because the hotel could be in a lot of trouble if their staff is harrasing and terrorizing their guests. So to me, it feels like it's being swept under the rug. Overall, again I'm sorry you experienced this.

Taylor- Thank you so much for making this video. I watched it when you first released it, and it resonated with me because I travel all over the US on business, alone. Tonight, I find myself in the Westin in Greenville, South Carolina. Someone tried twice to get into my room. I immediately called the front desk, and within 1 minute, they had a hotel employee at my door. The front desk clerk had written an incorrect room number on this man’s key card. Your video absolutely contributed to my decision to call immediately. Thank you.

I remember when a deer was attacking my dog which is my dads “grandchild” hearing my dog cry in pain and hearing me scream on the phone he said was the hardest thing ever cause he couldn’t be right there to save us..The thoughts that had to be in your parents mind for what could happen 😩

I think you did everything right while thinking on your feet, talking to your parents and attempting to reach help. It sounds as though the front desk person was in cohorts with the 3 voices at your door. Many people made great suggestions such as using hair spray, toilet tank cover which is porcelain and will cut you to the bone. I commend you on dragging a chair to your door for additional safety.
I think your subscribers should blast that Hotel through their Corporate office with thousands of comments on woman’s safety in their Hotel. Shameful, scary, and more than threatening.
Also, shameful on the London Police. What the hell.
I have already sent my “grandmother” complaint to the Corporate office. Your safety is the primary concern.

I said this in another comment, and though I am sure you have no bad intentions with your comment at all, it is easy to think about what we would have, could have, or should have done outside of a threatening situation (or afterwards when the body and mind are functioning normally). Our nervous systems act automatically on perceived threat: unlike the other parts of our brain, it is very fast and non-verbal, meaning that it cannot be reasoned with through words and it acts instantly in one of five ways to keep us safe. Though a video for evidence would have been helpful afterwards when dealing with management, corporate, etc., in the moment, recording a video was not the top priority to keep her safe. Taylor fought to protect herself in the best way she could, and most importantly, her actions were successful at keeping her safe. I appreciate her sharing her experience in an effort to help others, and I hope people can be supportive of her, rather than critique what she could have done better in the moment.

The reactions from the managers only make me think that it was their staff doing that and they were protecting them. That’s why it makes sense they didn’t answer the phone and would’ve had easy access to a room key. And it’s so annoying to hear they didn’t ask for confirmation or anything to re-issue your room key.
