    This song was played as the main promotional material for when the game came out and the level New Donk City. The level is supposed to be based on New York with Pauline, Mario's old love interest, as mayor of the city and vocalist of this song.

    • @marche800
      @marche800 Před rokem +16

      New Donk City is also a huge throwback to the original Donkey Kong which was the first game Mario, Pauline and Donkey Kong appeared.

      @@marche800The melody during the bridge of this tune is an arrangement of the original Donkey Kong arcade game music, which was extremely barebones, literally just 5 notes repeated over and over. It was a nice nod to the history of Donkey Kong.
      This tune is just a huge shot of nostalgia for me, including the music and sound effects and even the admittedly cheesy lyrics.

    This song made me tear up a little, this area of the game was such a wonderful celebration of where this series came from and I'm sure any long time Mario fan felt the same way. The little nods back to the original Donkey Kong were just the absolute cherry on the top, the break where it plays the 25M tune or the trumpets doing the little barrel jump jingle. Just so amazing.

    Pauline is the (in-game) singer for the song. She's the mayor of the Mario equivalent of New York, and she's quite popular with the residents. Mario saved her ONCE back in the original Donkey Kong game, and Pauline put together an entire city-wide holiday to celebrate her savior.
    Meanwhile, Mario saves Princess Peach every other week, and the most he gets out of her is the occasional cake.

    You think back to those old days, but the punchline here is that in the lore, it's sung by Pauline. That first girl that Mario ever had to save from Donkey Kong. And when playing Odyssey, this song plays during your "victory lap" going through an old-school pixelated course reminiscent of those old games. You brought up Mario 64? There's literally an outfit that makes you the oldschool 64 Mario. That old, polygon-riddled model. Yup. And some of the secrets of 64 are also secrets in the Mushroom Castle world in Odyssey. So yes, Mario is eternal. It remembers who it is. Nintendo always delivers a certain polish that's rare in the industry nowadays. Little to no bugs slip through the cracks. Speedrunners will find them, but I sure don't, despite trying to go full completionist.

Jump Up Superstar is a kind of soundtrack that I personally never thought would come into a Mario game especially with the vocals. The moment in the game were this plays is a nostalgic flashback at its finest as many have already pointed out, but i also really like that before this moment (New Donk Festival) you help the Mayor of the city Pauline by safing the city and the get her band for the festival, and at the end of the festival you can see the band perform and Mario dances along. Always taking the time to savor the moment and listen to this awesome OST.

    This song got used a lot in promotional material and I never got tired of it; it's just so joyful. And the section this plays in during the game is a blast. I have a lot of appreciation for Mario, but I don't really stick with the mainline games. Odyssey was the first game I actually finished single player; I had finished some of the 2D platformers that can be played with 2+ players. But Odyssey was just a joy to play and this song feels so symbolic of that.

    About Nintendo's quality standards for its franchises: when Shigeru Miyamoto (creator of Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, and several others, may as well call him Mr. Nintendo) was working as an executive producer, he'd often "upend the table," or throw out everything his team had presented to him, regardless of the stage of development they were in. If he didn't approve, it was tossed and they'd have to start over again until they won his approval. The results truly speak for themselves.
    He's also why we always, always check behind waterfalls for secrets. Dude hid all kinds of things in the original Legend of Zelda in '86, urging players to explore and make the Hyrule on their cartridge their own 😉

    • @Cyrinil142
      @Cyrinil142 Před rokem +3

      While this is true, this new era of nintendo bangers, (Mario Odyssey, Breath of the Wild etc) comes from when Shigeru stepped back. For years, Miyamoto was the one pushing things like the Mario series being more focussed on linear, course-clear gameplay like Galaxy 2 and 3d world/land. The younger developers weren't really able to second guess those choices.
      Once Miyamoto stepped down, younger developers who *grew up on nintendo* were able to try and capture some of the lightning that worked back in Nintendo's golden age.
      Probably the main reason that the Switch era generally considered far superior to the Wii-U era.

    For some reason I got tears in my eyes when the game had a trailer (I think it was even the reveal?) in one of Nintendo's "Nintendo Direct" presentations (in which new games are revealed or new trailers are shown) because it was brand new, but hits deep into my nostalgia somehow I guess. Like it's a huge celebration of Mario games somehow and sends you down memory lane.

    This is one of the first times that a Mario game had voiced lyrics so it makes sense you were surprised, and I remember that a lot of Nintendo fanboys were mad because they associate Sonic music with vocal tracks and also think Sonic is cringe. Also as someone else said, it is true that it was used in promotional material, but it is also just a song celebrating Mario. You hear this song in a festival where you move through a 2D section (Odyssey has 2D and 3D areas) that is designed after the Donkey Kong arcade game with the festival recounting "the history of New Donk City". In fact New Donk City, which is the larger level could be argued to be a celebration of Mario as well, as you can play 1-1 of the original Super Mario Bros within the city, there is a reference to Mario Maker, Pauline, the person singing the lyrics to the song in game is the Mayor of the city and the girl Mario saves in the Donkey Kong arcade game, the list goes on. In many ways this area of Odyssey is just nostalgia the level

      It's hard to relate to others how monumental the move to 3D really was. Hearing the "you don't have enough stars to open the door, haha" music with Bowser's bwahaha takes me straight back to being a grubby 10 year old girl blissfully ruining her neck playing those demo setups designed to be too uncomfortable to play longer than maybe 5 minutes. Oh boy, I have some opinions on this one but I'll try to say them in the most respectful way possible.
    I'll talk about what I like about the song first. It's fun, happy and the big band feel is nice. The bass line is probably my favorite part of the song and I really enjoy the sound effects used, adding sound effects in music where it's appropriate is one of my favorite things, the instruments sound good and the performance is well done. Now the thing that makes this song irk me, it's less about the song itself or more about how popular it got. People were praising it to crazy lengths and making it such a huge deal when it's just an average song to me. It doesn't do anything that wows me, it's a first for Mario sure but it doesn't hold a candle to other series that deserve some of that praise this song got. Basically I got annoyed with people talking about it all the time, the song itself is fine but it just ended up being annoying to me now. It's not a bad song and there's nothing wrong with liking/loving the song, I'm just not a fan of it personally.
