I'm a robotics engineer and I can't wait until this develops more and I can use it as a secondary display for CAD things, its really easy to loose track of size when you're working on small assemblies. This could display 1:1 real time renders
What kind of GPU do I need to run it though? Linus was vague with his "serious GPU grunt" statement.
Wait till the military gets hold of this stuff for their command and control screens
I bought one for exactly this reason.
@@vincentduverger Nah, this should just require drawing from multiple camera angles, and some interpolation using the Z-buffer to reduce the number of angles from 45. It won't need that much GPU power (though SLI is probably quite helpful and should scale very well), and only a tiny bit of added CPU load, mostly just due to driving the GPUs/orchestrating data transfer.

when i was in the hospital a few years ago there were small and really big portraits of pigeons in the hallway next to my room; there were at least 15 of them. they were also holographic and was perplexed by how cool it looked. i walked by them a few times a day to stretch my legs. it seemed like the pictures werent in a digital frame tho. still don't know how they got it to work otherwise. it was very detailed and awesome.
i also could've imagined everything being high on pain killers for 3 days

Soon as Linus said it was wall mountable, I thought of a picture where the eyes did follow you around the room.👀👀😁👁
Oh, that's a GOLDEN Idea!
I went to a holographic museum in Berlin about 25 years ago. It's the most epic experience I've had in a long while. There was a full airplane cockpit, but when you wanted to grab anything, it of course wasn't there. Now, those were all stills. This is pretty epic because it's moving images. It's coming guys!
"Need" is a strong word... I think "want" would be better suited. Looks like a fun toy, but I fear it might just end up collecting dust after the novelty has worn off.
We “need” this the same way linus “needs” a The Wall
well, if it's a photo frame, then its job IS to collect dust on a shelf 🤷🏻♂️
As cool as this may be, I do agree with you 😀

I just received mine today and it is pretty damn cool. I've been a 3D fan since anaglyph and lenticular 3D and the 1st laser holograms. I see tons of potential for this. And it does include one waifu in the demo and there are already several new models/animations available through the community. So that I know will make some happy and give them an idea of what it possible. While not 'useful' to some it looks cool as a desk or shelf piece and has that animated pictures in Harry Potter magic to it. I got a lot of ideas that could really push this in marketability.
One thing he did not really mention was the trim light can be turned off and when it is it has a nicer depth effect since you do not see the white lines reflected like and grid line.
I already asked this in the comments, but hopefully you could answer since you have one - at 4:48 there seems to be a ghosty image in the rear once you get beyond a certain viewing angle - is this a reflection off the back side of the fake illuminated front screen thing? If so would it not just be better without that?
If they made one big enough for a table, imagine this for RPG gaming - fullish true-ish 3D landscapes and figures, for all your battle maps.....
And now I need it my life…
Damn, I was thinking that @13" it would start becoming interesting. but yes an entire table top for a d&d game would be awesome.
@Peter ⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻ Pretty sure they don't even have "one" 3090 running the existing ones, and a lot would depend on a) if you are doing true 3D, where it has to calculate things, or something closer to isomorphics, as well as what resolution you are looking at attempting. It is likely, with some clever tricks, to be far less of a hardware issue than you make it out to be. That said.. Yeah, real time 3D would possibly require at least one such card - if you did it full on 3D like that. But.. if you where only doing someone "good enough", like early WOW or Ever Quest - pretty sure you could at least "approach it".
They have a 32 inch one on their website, but it costs an arm and a leg. :/
Not with this technology. Lenticulars like this only work if your eyes are on the correct orientation for the lenticular. If you put this portrait display in landscape, the illusion doesn't work and it looks like a regular screen. I think AR solutions will get you closer to your dream, I liked what the Hololens had to offer but the viewing angle was not very big.
I feel like this will become like a portfolio flex item by 3D artists. Either to have on their desk, or to hand out during an interview.
Eeexactly! If i was a 3D artist trying to impress customers, I couldn't NOT have this!
i would take it to show posible buyers a 3D image of an apartment
Yes this has some great use for VR design, I don't always feel well and want to throw on a headset but seeing something with depth/3d can really help in the overall creation of things. Scale and feel are pretty important imo.
Finally, i can play games and actually move my body to look around corners
Probably be cheaper to do ot in vr than try to build a rig that could run a game on this

I could see this being used for entertainment centers, theme parks, clothing/jewelry stores and other customer facing services. I'm not sure it would fit in any of my professional work at this time, but if it becomes a mainstream portrait frame and of varying sizes, I can definitely see photographers taking new formats of photography and videography for clients. Heck, imagine having a videographer take a multi view video of your wedding kiss to create a holographic motion image that looks good on this thing. I don't see it becoming affordable any time soon, but if I can get some high profile clients I would definitely think I could charge them buttloads for something like that.

I need that product!!
Really, really cool! From reading on their website and similar technologies I'm wondering how much special sauce it takes to make this work. The fundamentals seem identical to lenticular prints. My guess is the varying number of views is realized by changing the distance of the lense array to the display, or mayby (i don't really think it would be necessary and it would be more complicated) by adjusting the focal length. The tradeof would be horizontal pixel density for number of views. Maybe it's more complicated than I think (like lense geometry to make imersion better?) Still, really awesome tech. I kind of want to make my own now and see how close I can get, ... you can buy those sheets for lenticular prints ... stick on monitor ... quickly make some test images for a proof of concept, ... hmmm....
