You can make this out of an LCD with a burnt backlight and a table lamp or window behind it (well, sort of). Or just stripping an off-the-shelf OLED, if you want authentic transparent blacks just like on this one. Bargain, just strip an OLED and save 6k... doesn't sound so great anymore, does it?

The conclusion is pretty solid, a couple years ago we had a client at the place I used to work at who wanted us to redesign his storefront to integrate two transparent screens to be the glass on the front displays. The image was not as sharp and it required some trickery to look decent but they did in fact made anything inside the display look 10x more expensive and exclusive.
They use elf on both side om this side the made it into a thick rose elf
honestly they did that stuck-in-a-tv effect waaay better than most movies and TV shows have done it. they actually had a piece of glass he was banging instead of just trying to fake it and smacking the air. i think they even recorded the audio from the other side of the glass because the banging sounds were superb.

This could actually be a really cool thing to put at checkouts for some grocery stores or food places. Layer of TV there to show the customer their entire bill, but still face to face with the cashier, then potentially even build NFC payments right into a corner of the monitor. Could be an all in one retail machine, which is crazy cool.
Imagine going to an airport or a hotel and them being able to straight-up show you a list f the available options.

This should have been the start of the Linus Cinematic Universe (LCU). Linus being trapped inside a TV and an imposter taking over was too good of a plot to be disposable.

You could accomplish this with a TV on the floor point upwards reflecting through some glass at a 45 degree angle, arcade cabinet style. It's basically how teleprompters work over a camera.

Yeah, see-through displays are great for movies and games, though, since it means you can have the screen's content and the actor's face in the same shot. Not to mention all the dramatic 360s you can pull off while keeping everything visible. That's undoubtedly why they show up so much.
But it's particularly funny in the new Star Treks, where they don't merely have transparent screens floating in the air, but all interactions are done entirely through gestures and transparent virtual control surfaces. So you can't see the screen and instruments correctly, AND you get no tactile feedback. And they're using these things to fly their ships! Looks great onscreen, but it would be a nightmare to actually use.
That could be legitimately useful for modern Pinball tables. Jersey Jack already does some incredible things with RGB led lighting on their tables.
Saw this in one of Xiaomi's store in the Philippines, makes your jaw drop when you see it for yourself.

You can absolutely see the pixels if you stand that close because it's only 1080p on a 55" TV. And by the way as he mentioned "screen-door effect", the vertical space between pixels is larger than usual makes it even more obvious to see.

Could make a really cool storefront marketing display with an illusion of 3D. Imagine this display (or a projection onto clear plastic) displaying text and animations with the product in an illuminated black box behind it.

Transparent makes sense for user interfaces. Places where there isn’t any important info could be see through. Which is super futuristic! I love it

i think if this technology evolves to a degree where this can be utilized in a VR headset, it could make a great improvement to the current appeal and portability of headsets, making them more usable in everyday life. Imagine a pair of regular see-through glasses that at the touch of a button could turn into a VR headset to take calls / meetings wherever you are, and right back into a pair of glasses once its over :o
its really not that far off- if you take the back mirror, casing and lights off a normal LCD screen, you end up with basically the same thing- look up DIY projectors
I can imagine someone writing a screenplay where being able to see through the tv and into the viewer's own room plays into the story.

My ancient Acer monitor recently unstuck its only stuck pixel. Its been with me for over a decade. Only 1080p tho, and its only 60hz. I'm a filthy casual XD
Depends on the size of the display and its native resolution, as well as the number of stuck/dead pixels. On a large 1080p display, a single one is going to be easily noticeable, however, on a small 4k display, like a laptop, even a few of them would be acceptable if you don't go looking for them.

this actually would be brilliant for advertising, set one of these bad boys up in a high traffic area...say a trade show and you would definitely get a few people doing a double-take and coming within range of that booth's sales team where they could start chatting you up. If this had an alpha channel, it would make this quite a bit more usable.
Would be great to set up several of these in a big party room and run abstract visuals on it while getting blasted on shots and listening to drum and bass.

I think its more interesting how you can see Linus recording his advertisement with his phone probably having a like $1000 camera somewhere in that room.
I think the best use case for this technology (transparent screen) is in heads up displays. Both small sized (think sunglasses) and large glass sections (think vehicle windows/windshield). Basically anything where you want or need to see through the glass but want to superimpose additional information without using cameras and computers to capture the images then process them in near real time. In these scenarios a 1080, or even less, resolution would be more than sufficient.
Or for the rich folk, they can get entire windows in their house/condo/apartment made out of these screens, add in a darkening rear layer while watching full resolution content and you have a great window/HUD/stealth TV combination.
I would make it into a window and play freaky things when people walk by.

I hate to be this guy but $7200 is split between many things the TV has including even something like... HDMI inputs or the buttons on the remote control. Sure, the panel takes up the biggest chunk of the price, but it's not $7200. So, every pixel will end up being slightly more expensive than $0.0035

@@sigaev11 I see where you're going with this thought, but I think you got a little confused at the end. Each pixel would be a little cheaper because now you're saying that maybe $6000 of the cost is from the pixels, which would lower the individual pixel cost. The amount of pixels stays the same (dead or not) but the amount of money they account for is decreased, so the value of each is less than the initially calculated number above.
