      I had a dream once that I met the White Stripes. Somehow it was before White Stripes became famous, I opened the door in an old motel and it was Jack and Meg White having band practice. I was shocked and told them "you don't understand, you're going to become incredibly famous!" (like a superfan) and they just kind of smiled and nodded. When I woke up I realized it was the Little Room!

    "all it matter was the attitude of the song"
    that shit spoke to me,man. being a song writer and singer,you know,with no actual band,no fancy equipment. I used to get really frustrated thinking that my songs were too "empty" just because I didn't have other instruments playing along with me.
    I'm so glad I found this.

    I agree. Music is not just about rules, difficulty, & 'how much'. It's also about what it brings out in people. The emotions that boil to the surface & scald you to the point you have to tap a foot, nod your head, or wiggle your body. I'm a fan of White because he's stripped rock back down to it's bare minimum, without the glossy laser light shows, the usual lineup of a supporting cast, the 'voice-lessoned to death' singing.

    @Terribleathletes Před 7 lety +3

    "By the time I was 18 somebody played me Son House" sorry, but I don't believe him. Jack is an excellent slide guitarist and l believe that he loves the old bluesmen, I do too, but I'm pretty sure he discovered them the way the rest of our generation did, he grew up idolizing groups like Cream and Led Zeppelin and then when they cited their influences as Robert Johnson, Howlin' Wolf, Son House etc. he ran out and researched the hell out of Delta Blues music and found that he loved that type of music as well. Nothing wrong with that, I loved it too after I started listening to it, but claiming to have discovered it all on his own is just him trying to seem like he's so off the beaten path "in" on something the rest of us aren't.

    • @chaykuh
      @chaykuh Před 7 lety +2

      This man is pretty much *the* epitome of the "hipster" movement. "The attitude" of a song, good God that's so corny. I imagine he is a nice guy, but the effort he puts into portraying this image - that he seems to believe himself - is a bit ridiculous. He's still a young artist though, so I guess that comes with it for some. That said, I started moving away from my pop influences around 18-21, so that isn't completely unreasonable that he found this music around then.

    • @bfish89ryuhayabusa
      @bfish89ryuhayabusa Před 5 lety

      He never says he discovered it on his own. He said someone showed it to him. This was before Wikipedia and other things were readily available on the internet that make it incredibly easy find whatever you want, so just listening to Zeppelin and others might lead you to Howlin Wolf, Robert Johnson, and Lead Belly, but Son House is less likely to come up.
      Also, the attitude/feel of the song is definitely a thing. That's pretty much all this song is, lacking any polish or arrangement, which is why it provoked such a reaction in him. That it could make him feel something strong without all the things he had come to expect in a song.

    I'm glad he's my idol, I'm proud to say that he's the reason I dream of becoming a famous musician, I'm glad that Jack White is my biggest inspiration. Jack, though you're never going to read this, I hope that one day I can stand on a stage in front of thousands and say to myself "Dude, that first time I heard Blue Orchid, that first time I heard Blue Veins, that first time I heard Icky Thump, that's the music, THAT'S THE GUY that inspired me and brought me here."

    Never listened to any Jack Black music, solo or band(s) until I watched this documentary. Seeing his true love of music, his unique style and capabilities, and the respect of his peers, opened my eyes to some new music....& I am primarily a metal-head!

    Jack White not only plays guitar amazingly, he also is exceptional on piano and drums, writes well and is a true artist, by any standard of the word. He hasn't been in my face enough so I wouldn't say he was in my face.at all really. And flash in the pan? What do you imagine he is trying to do or express and failing at so miserably? How would you go about whatever it is? Sure he puts everything he's got into what and wherever he's at.. But that's a rare quality in us humans, and so I admire him.

    I have much respect for what Jack White has done
    to help Blues music. Having said that, I am very
    surprised that Son House's "Grinnin' in Your Face"
    is his favorite song. I first started noticing Blues
    music about 1954 & have heard an enormous
    amount of Blues music over the decades from the
    early Bluesmen to today & I can't agree that it's a
    special song. Son House made lots of great
    music though. Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson of Canned
    Heat did much to bring House back to public
    awareness

    Give thumbs if you learned something from this video. These words maybe changed everything I thought about the music. There are a lot of rediculous copycats in this world, but when the right man walk up to the stage, and this man knows exactly what hes doin' it doesn't matter how the rythm goes or can he sing powerfully or exactly in the note. Music gives part of you to someone else and many people can't do that well. Thats what I call soul, and only that matters.

    Son House's delivery here is standard operating musical procedure for African-American blues and gospel singers. Jack re-creates well the procedure. WHITE STRIPES first album is infused with the procedure. That album is a virile blues album. Jack deserves all the accolades he's accumulated. His fans are lucky.

    This man understands music . . . . you can hear it in his art . . . in every one of his songs . . . the ghosts of the great artists before him permeate his creation . . . Of course Jack White digs Son House . . . Jack White is a true musician . . . a true artist . . . and a true genius.

    Jack White is a committed and dedicated musician who has forged his identity through effort and passion in equal measure. To suggest that witchcraft is responsible for his abilities is an insult to him as an artist and a professional. Of course we won't see another Jack White (He is an individual human being) but there will always be musicians with the drive, passion and competence that he displays as long as there are people willing to offer support to these men/women.
