Fuzz Face before or after Wah Pedal? Tips on how to make it work like Hendrix and Frusciante

  • In this video I'll show you how I make the Jimi Hendrix JHF-1 Fuzz Face and the Dunlop Cry Baby Wah pedal work together.
    For recording I used:
    Fender American Standard
    Marshall DSL40 w/creamback speaker
    Shure SM58 (cap off)
    Disclaimer for the haters: I know John Frusciante does not currently use a Fuzz Face (he did during the Mother's Milk era), but this is more of a method on how to use a Fuzz and Wah together.

    Even if it's not the Hendrix or Fusciante-style, I actually like fuzz before wah.

    Hendrix definitely used the wah before the Fuzz Face. That's how I've gotten a good sound (after I saw Jimi's setup in films). Maybe cut back or remove all the reverb when going for that sound.

      Yes, Jimi used the wah before the fuzz face but he had Roger Mayer doing god knows what to his pedals. As I said in a previous comment, the only way I was able successfully use the wah before the fuzz face, was when using the Fulltone wah because it has a buffer control. Everything else I tried failed me miserably lol! I find that the fuzz face before the wah gets ME a lot closer but I'm glad you got it working for you.

    What you need ... is a "fuzz friendly" wah (in that if you use an older fuzz circuit (like a fuzz face) and go from this wah into that type of fuzz....you'll get the dreaded feedback/oscillation that you get with many wahs Some wahs nowadays (Geoffrey Teese etc etc. are what is called "Fuzz friendly" meaning you can run the wah into a fuzz face and it will not squeal/misbehave and still give nice full wah sound (some of my wahs in the past have had to be modded with the "Foxrox" wah retro kit (that changes the impedance so it will work with old fuzz faces

    • @uglypensacola8331
      @uglypensacola8331  Před rokem

      Yes there are a few fuzz friendly wahs, but most aren't affordable to "younger wallets". You can spend $170 for a Fulltone wah or put the fuzz face in front of a $30 Cry Baby.

    hendrix used the wah before the fuzz
    you need to put a buffer pedal between them or mod your wah to have a buffer in it

      Thanks for your reply, the only time I was able to make the Wah work before the Fuzz Face was when using a Fulltone Wah because it has a buffer control knob, if recall to right, I think I set the buffer to about 60%. Now was that what Roger Mayer did to Jimi's pedals? Who knows?

      He was going for an extreme sound..thats what wah first is good for. Seems most people here just want the conventional wah sound at all times. That is fine for them.
