High School Fleet's Perfect Depiction of a Mature Character Conflict

- Character conflict is a core part of many stories, and it can be handled in different ways. Very often, especially when the characters in conflict are in positions of power, the conflict can get very personal, and aggressive. But it doesn't have to be that way. You very much can have very different characters, with different ideas of how to do things, have a more mature conflict, with pure motives--untainted by things like ego.
High School Fleet provides a great example of this, with the conflict in leadership styles between Akeno Misaki & Mashiro Munetani. Let's take a closer look.

honestly loved Haifuri's characters and their developments throughout the series, tho, with all the GuP esque shenanigans
YES! More Haifuri.
And yes, the evolution of Mikka and Shiro's relationship is a high point of the series. Because as it turns out, two anime high school girls can have a conflict of authority in a far more relatable and mature manner than other "Adult" settings.
Is the arrangement perfect? No. Did either of them ask for it to be this way? No. Do they both try their best to make it work AND become stronger and closer for it? You better believe it.
It really says a lot that Shiro starts out wondering how Mikka ever got to the rank of Captain, to spending the majority of the movie doubting if leaving the Harekaze is the right thing to do because she's become so attached.
I would love to see a second season of High School Fleet, watching your analysis just makes me want to see that happen even more, such a good show.
it didn't happen other studio went bankrupt
What I like about Akeno and Shiro's relationship is that they both are very good captains. I mean Akeno doesnt hesitate to let Shiro being the captain of Harekaze, while Akeno is out to do something. Like against Graf Spee where Akeno went out to save Wilhelmina. And as you pointed out as well. I also feel like with both Akeno and Shiro being very good captains, then it does fit captian Picard and Commander Riker from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Especially Shiro being something like commander RIker. Both able to command a ship and do what they were ordered before, but still able to judge on their own actions
Military Moe. Something you wouldn't expect to take seriously, yet in both High School Fleet and Girls und Panzer, that is not the case. There's more character in this genre than in most other genres, not just in anime, but in all of fiction as a whole. The sheer amount of character and development from shows like this help to make them much more enjoyable. It's cute girls operating military hardware, yet so much more. And this anime is a perfect example why. Character, conflict, development, three tenats that this show, and the genre as a whole, take and carry it with them to the end.
High School Fleet is a really adorable and enjoyable anime, but also a wonderful story about character and conflict and growing as a result. Just an amazing anime.
Thanks for the analysis. I really enjoy these, and I can't wait for next week for your next analysis. But until then, take care.
I thoroughly loved the show. But in all aspects… I really love the dynamics between both captain and XO. Both complimenting each other’s deficiencies and both knowing what needs to be done
interesting story where the worlds premere warships from ww2 where right now they are in pieces or in whole are rotting and rusting for past 70 years, are miraculously still intact and being used for training purposes
Thank you for talking about this anime! hope you can talk about kotobuki some time
Absolutely love this series. Great characters and beautiful ships. Where else do you see 4 Yamatoclass battleships. The setting is good and the storylines captivating. And over the course of the series, the OVA and the movie every character gets a small moment in the sun. Would love to see you do a take on Sora No Woto and specifically on the character of Filicia Heideman.
Its a really interesting show. Would love to see more.
I'm a manager at Amazon. I have many teens and twenty somethings who act more mature than the "adults " I have. 40 50 and 60 and they can be the most immature.
Is it gup but with ship?
There's a High School Fleet Movie?!
Oh yes. And it's a good one. But I would watch the 2 OVA's first, if I were you. Enjoy.
