The Future of Modi’s India

  • In a year in which half the world votes, India, the largest democracy, stands out. Ethnic tensions, nationalist rhetoric, and concerns about the influence of AI and other misinformation campaigns form a tense background for this spring's election. What is the historical context for such a contentious political climate? What does this year’s Indian election say about the future of global democracy? Featuring Shuja Nawaz, founding director of the South Asia Center at the Atlantic Council, Safiya Ghori-Ahmad, senior director with APCO Worldwide and Dr. Paul Staniland, Professor of Political Science at University of Chicago. Moderated by New York Times correspondent Emily Schmall. Co-sponsored by the Pearson Institute for the Study and Resolution of Global Conflicts.

Even though Congress has access to all it's money (barring the few hours), every TDH in the WORLD keeps clamoring that Congress has NO ACCESS to its accounts.
Also, the Indian Muslims worrying about their Indian citizenship status is due to FALSE PROPAGANDA that their status will be affected. In reality there no such threat. A Hindu or a Muslim in Hyderabad (where Sofiya's aunt is) will have same opportunity/challenge. One of the speaker says " BJP is a very powerful party". In a democracy, it's citizenry of a country which makes a party powerful. Indians are not fools. They can see the speed at which Indian landscape is changing. Why would they want the whole process to change and the country goes back to " chalta hey" kind of leadership.

about Dharavi, the largest slum, the state government had planned a huge development and rehousing project for the residents of the slum but then the government changed and the congress and allies came into power and the project stopped (because a major vote share comes from those slums). This is what democracy in India looks like and thats why we feel modi being there long term at the centre atleast will have a positive impact on the country.

Due to technological advancement, most people across globe can understand what is propaganda and what is reality faced by majority of citizens.
None other than Indians can understand what the truth is and what democracy means to them. We just listen to all these discussions and laugh a lot 😂 people can ignore or can be agitated ...but the world will go on by its virtue without anyone's opinion or perception

Simple statements like "Modi Govt froze the bank accounts of the Congress" without any context i.e. that Congress did not pay their taxes for several years, I think is irresponsible. Give the whole truth if you have to say something.

Great Discourse ….its just that it’s devoid of any intellectual substance….they just did the “headline” hunting… that is to take cursory view of complex diverse vast Indian society and very poorly tried to coerce into their template view of “Modi’s India”

Dear Indian students at Chicago school: do you know what you are doing to your matrubhumi? You are selecting two Muslims from Pakistani to discuss democracy, does it make any sense? And you have selected a NYTimes person to moderate the discussion, the most biased person and organization against India. What are guys thinking? Haven’t you got any political sense and you going to a political school? You guys have to grow up and the USA is not a place to learn. I being an Indian, sorry to say, 20:28 Better go back home and get rid of your colonial mindset. You should have at least selected a BJP person to defend all this nonsense. 🙏
    Please be careful next time.

Modi’s India will keep its head down and focus on doubling its GDP to $7-8 trillion in the next 10 years. The West can keep talking, forecasting and dissecting Indian democracy till the cows come home. It is their prerogative. Close to 80% of the World is non-Western and therefore the inability to see the world through a non-Western lens is worrying to say the least.

BTW India's gdp per capita is abt 2,850 now which has been for the last few months higher than bangladesh it's so surprising that these ppl always shift back to caste politics to explain discrimination in India without even understanding that the whole of the north east which is predominantly Christian has voted for the BJP and even in the south the BJP will win that being said we don't need trade with pak and if the belt and road is seen as trademark for China doing business and trade with our neighbours then clearly they haven't heard of the debt trap and the fact that sri lanka had collapsed and so has pakistan, maldives is on the verge and nepal has a dead airport project and bangladesh has only one major industry that is producing clothes, and they too had to go to the IMF if china is so good at doing businesses with these countries then why are all of them running to the IMF each time they fail😂😂 oh and BTW I'm an indian Christian (Catholic) from the south of india so incase anyone calls me a blind supporter like these Chinese funded individuals are
