Great reaction! I was really unsure about Melissa McCarthy as Ursula as I thought they should have given it to a drag queen (the original Ursula was based on the drag queen Divine) or to the singer Lizzo who was also in the running I believe. having said all that, I think Melissa is BRILLIANT in this role. She has a surprisingly good singing voice and really embodies the part which with the amazing Disney effects makes it a really powerful performance.
I’m so eager to see it later this month when it’s streaming!!
Lizzi is not a contralto, this role was never meant to be hers no matter how much she wanted it. Melissa was the much better choice.
I absolutely love Melissa! I have been a fan since Gilmore Girls. She is an incredible actress!! I knew she'd be incredible as Ursula, and I am so glad she fought for this role! It is my favorite portrayal of the character now!!

As usual, Disney did not disappoint. Whenever you see that Disney castle at the beginning of a film you know it is a sign of quality. Melissa McCarthy was just incredible in this. She blew me away when I watched the film with my husband. I had to rewind it and watch her sing it again. But, as usual, your reaction is priceless. Melissa McCarthy was the best in that cast. She did an amazing job as Ursula. Truly the best person for the role. I had no idea she can sing like that. So similar to the disney animated version from the 90's which is my fave version

Please, please, please could you react to a relatively unknown independent British artist called Chinchilla singing 'Fingers' live! 🙏🙏🙏 I discovered her recently through discovering another artist called Ren who is ridiculously talented too (they've done duets together). But as you're a vocal coach i thought Chinchilla would suit a reaction from you best. She is amazing and other reactors have likened her top female performers. She really deserves a spotlight. I’m a piano teacher and I actually prefer her version over the original, dare I say it lol. She put a lot more vocal expression, dynamic, and phrased the lyrics a lot more epically. Especially the finishing “SOOOOOOUUUUUULLLLLL!” 😁 I love playing this and the film’s other songs for my students. I saw the film and love it! The music is absolutely beautiful! “Vanessa’s Trick” is a short yet epic humming version Halle gives of Poor Unfortunate Souls, you’ll love it!
I have to disagree. The original rendition was extremely particular and nuanced. I usually love Melissa, but I think she overdid it here with the barrage of random modulation and jumping octaves, and, to me, the majority of her performance felt aimless and disconnected from the lyrics (e.g. her going "Pathetic!" right in Ariel's face when it was supposed to be a sneaky aside, like many other things). I don't think that louder necessarily equals better. Howard Ashman knew what cadence, rhythm, intensity he wanted from his performers down to every syllable. CZcamsr Astor Rhymemaster explained the sheer brilliance of the original in great detail.
@@BeatGoat I understand where you're coming from especially if you're not into theatrics but calling her performance aimless and disconnected feels very unfair. I'm glad majority of people agree with the original commenter and appreciate her performance. A true standout in the film.
@@BeatGoati have to say i agree with all people who say melissa’s version is better. Ursula was always meant to be cunning and dark with a lot of nuanced in the movie while in the original she is portrayed more as this im just a vilain who is misunderstood.
@@Whitewolf1827 Huh? It's the exact opposite. Her performance is super nuanced in the original cartoon and beyond one-note boring in the movie. You can't be "cunning" when you're basically screaming how evil you are in the face of the person you're supposed to trick. I don't know where you're getting that Ursula was portrayed as misunderstood in the original... She definitely wasn't.

Have to admit, im not a fan of her portrayal of Ursula. I felt like she didnt quite hit the mark. Ursula was sinister, sexy, and comical all in one and Melissa didnt quite capture that for me.
