One of my favorite Benchmades. Very light, very thin and very slicey but still feels robust. It has a nice roomy handle and the texturing on the scales is great.
Have had one since they came out and except for a few battle scars it performs and feels like when it was new. It is a hall of famer in my collection. Highly recommended
I have one and love it.
It’s so so so thin in the pocket and holds an edge very well.
I would absolutely buy again.
The Bailout is amazing imo. A fav for me.
Just got this guy a few months ago! Been carrying ever since. I usually carry a smaller but this thing is amazing! My favorite benchmade yet! I’ll never buy another knife other than a BM!
I love my Bailout! The pattern in the scales feels great and grippy in the hand. The price put me off a bit but I took the plunge and I'm so glad I did! It weighs nothing but works like a beast. Right up there with my 940 in feel and utility!
Scored an Easter ham yesterday with my bailout. Of all the knives I’ve edc’d I’ve only carried a Spyderco pm2 more. It’s become an all time favorite.
Long time BM owner here, imo this is the best and most beautiful BM ever. After all the stainless crap, they finally nailed it w the m4 and the parkerised finish! Perfect edc. Perfect size but a 4 1/2 “ blade would be perfect too.
Excellent review, 🫡 Thanks
Very nice knife looks like it’s worth the money. And with the aluminum scales, the weight is fantastic.
I’ve been carrying a aluminum scaled bailout for nearly 2 years. One of my favorite knives, just because of the weight, plus the aluminum scales had a nice *ting* when you flick it out.
I hadn’t had an issue with the glass breaker.
Same mimes going on 2 years also, zero issues, it's actually in my pocket right now
I love the Bailout! The texture of the stock aluminum scales is perfect. You forget it's in your pocket!!
Totally agree!
Probably my favorite EDC Benchmade overall. It’s definitely the one I carry most, at least.
Everything sounds great but then the price. The fact that you're having a good experience with the steel itself is a huge plus.
You have the best reviews. Every time I want a new knife … which is quite a bit …. I jump on your channel to see if you have a review on it haha helps my decision making. Keep it up 👍🏼
That means so much!! Thank you so much
@@gideonstacticalhowdy, I’m looking for the thong/glass breaker/ spacer unit for the 537 to change out from the 537FE which only has a plain thong hole, to no avail. Have u any idea where to find? Thanks
I've had mine for bout 2 or 3 years now. I have used it in light conditions and semi heavyish conditions. Still with factory edge on it. I keep it sharp with my Sharpens Best with the fire striker. No prying with that thin tip at all.
I've got both versions of the Bailout I carry my m4 Bailout when I'm out and about and the 3v Bailout I use for work since I do Lawncare for a living so it gets pretty dirty but my reason for th 3v at work is the fact the blade was warped out of the box but it's definitely an excellent knife I deleted the pommel on both with a rockscale design backspacer which made them both much more comfortable in hand
You got that right 👍 how to make a find choice on blades.a lot out there.yes.
I put an Original Goat backspacer on mine, got rid of the glass breaker/lanyard loop backspacer altogether. I got a purple one, with the green scales it matches my 940.
Mine was really crunchy on opening due to the Cerakote. I used some Gunny Juice & it’s solved that problem. I also put a Snaggle Tooth wave opening feature with a small lanyard makes this a great lightweight tactical knife.
i have one , i love it , the m4 sharpens up great , my first benchmade
Just ordered the BM Bailout in crater blue the FDE Coated blade looks appealing to me. I have two Bugout’s and really enjoy the light weight aesthetic and feel of them and hoping the bailout will feel the same. After carrying the large and small Chris Reeves knives for years these knives are a welcome change to the width and weight difference LOL. You did a great review by the way…
Your mainly paying for the m4 steel. It's literally a $15 piece of metal your paying $270 for.
Absolutely great knife except for the glass breaker on my version. Extremely sharp right out the box. Super smooth.
I’ve been on the fence about this one. Great video ! Thanks
Glad I could help!
I love mine as edc being in the usmc I’ve beat on it and it takes every bit of it I absolutely love mine I had a bench made tactical triage and lost it on my last deployment sadly they discontinued that model
I’ve carried the Bugout for a couple of years now. I hope to get the Bailout someday; but I’m still loving my Bugout too much.
Glad you finally got it & werent disappointed😂
My first Benchmade and first big boy knife purchase. Been around 3 years and 20 something knives later, and this is still my favorite
Overpriced. Had mine for two years, the glass breaker is the main reason I don’t carry it. I may try a
aftermarket backspacer however the ergos just seem off to me, maybe the thinness?
I’m still waiting for all manufacturers to upgrade from T6 frame screws to T8. At least the screws in some brands have been well hardened/tempered.
Been tempted many times on the Bailout - haven't done it yet. Although after this video, I probably will. Especially since after your video on the Council Woodcraft Pack Axe, I now have that coming tomm!!
Sick!!!!
My absolute favorite knife. I want more.
I have both versions - I put Ti scales on the original plastic version but I still prefer the updated model with the AL scales - largely because of the M4 blade. Tantos aren't my favorite but it does add some utility... if someone asked me if they should buy a Bugout, I would point them at this knife instead.
I picked up a Shot Show exclusive Bailout in CPM3V from NW Knives. It'll be my first Benchmade in a few years. I'll echo that they're overpriced, but I couldn't resist this one. Stoked to get it.
I bought the grivory because I didn’t realize how light it was. Aluminum scales and a backspacer made all the difference. M4 steel is amazing however, its really nice I like it on my freek
I had the 3V version since they came out. I just lost mine this past weekend and was my main EDC. I came here to see your opinion on going with grivory scales and 3V vs aluminum scaled and M4. I think this time around I’ll get M4 version and pray I do t loose another one.
I've been carrying an AFCK for 27 years and this is the first knife since that has me interested.
I love the scales on this knife!!!!!
Same!
Hi Aaron informative video.I like the drop on the tanto work better for my uses.I have CRK Inkosi
Tanto and Griptilian tanto drop.
Love them both been holding off
on the Bailout but on my list.Enjoy them.
I have a bug out much tuffer than
they look
applied weapons technology makes anodized aluminum scales for the bugout..exceptional upgrade
I haven’t owned a Benchmade but plan on buying the bailout or the the mini adams. I love the full size adams but at it’s price and size I think a smaller- medium fixie will serve me better. That being said I think I would carry the bailout way more. I drive a tow motor and think it would make a great warehouse knife. Great review 👍
Get the mini adamas,
If you have larger hands get the adamas, however if you have small/medium hands,
The mini adamas will work.
Super sharp and tough I own one
I have the exact same knife and its the best knife I have ever owned and the blade steel holds an edge forever and gets stupid sharp. I have had mine for about 1.5 years and I am thinking of picking up a second one just to have if they ever decide to stop making them.
There a new Permatex orange #25005. It's a Hight Strength Removable. 3X stronger than Blue. That's what it say on package. I haven't tried it out yet but I hope it works like it says.
G'day Aaron, noth'n wrong with them, though tantos make more sense on a fixy for woodscraft out in the sticks IMO. Main thing is; there's noth'n quite like when you get a blade that "exceeds" expectations, ............. especially when there's a pretty penny attached to it, ...... enjoy. Cheers Duke.
The only Benchmade that has interested me is the Crooked River but I edc a Buck 110. I like them BIG and overbuilt. There is a Cold Steel 4MAX Scout that I plan on carrying when I am not wearing a belt for my 110 sheath. GO BIG OR GO HOME!
I bought this a few years back for like 215 and honestly it's my favorite benchmade in my collection
Do you think 180 is a good price to pick one up?
@@hagninety4116 I'd do it
I've owned this exact one for about a year. I do really dig it, and it has a lot to offer, but I actually haven't carried it that much. Maybe because I worry about losing it ! haha. I just haven't adjusted to it's lightweight feel, despite it's robustness. I was not impressed with the very small pocket clip - I replaced with a NWLynch matching annodized deep carry clip. Mostly I like having a knife in the stable when I need both toughness AND light weight.
Love that blade...Bugout doesn't fit my hand, this does. Got an aftermarket backspacer to remove the protruding lanyard loop and glass breaker. Don't recall where, Etsy maybe,
I picked up the shot show 2023 edition bail out recently for $170. I've enjoyed it so far and even more considering I got it brand new for a huge discount.
I've been wanting a bailout in m4 for a while now. However, I know I would have to get a backspacer without the glass breaker almost immediately. So, I've been holding off.
I have a Benchmade 553 in M4 with the tanto blade and I love it
I have had mine about 6 months and it’s my daily driver default usually. But it also was stupid expensive for no reason imo. It’s nice but there’s other knives out there with more premium features for much less cost. But it’s still my fav. Sharpening is kinda hard at the notch. I wish it had a better clip too
Another great review Aaron. Thanks for all of your hard work. I’m on the fence with this one. I can get a lot of different knives for the price of that one Benchmade. The M4 steel is awesome, but I’m one of those weirdo’s that enjoys putting my own edge on my knives and maintaining that edge. Your video does have me thinking about this knife though. It would definitely be a ‘grail knife’ for me. I’d probably be afraid of using it to its potential because of its price tag, but it’d be a great knife to add to the collection. Maybe if I see it on sale on one of your hyperlinks. Love your channel, keep up the excellent work.
Thanks so much Kenneth!
Treat yourself
I think after you change the edge to your personal preference, it’ll be a killer knife.
I had a 940 Osborne before I got this Bailout M4. Let’s just say my Osborne has been sitting on my dresser for 2 1/2 months now lol. Love everything about this knife. Only issue is the green on the scales can come off a little too easy. So I’m extra careful with it lol
Same exact situation with me, except I lost my 940 and I miss it every day 😔
After buying the Benchmade Mini Presidio I put my other knives away, even my beloved 940. Now I’m trying not to buy any more knives.
I would prefer a drop point blade profile, but that tanto is similar to the Shootout I have , and I like it well enough. Oh, and the glassbreaker on my Shootout fell out too, so its not just yours or this model...
This knife is excellent. I got mime when it was 230$. Now apparently it it 270$ plus. As a veteran I went on AFphes exchange and bought another one for 151$ This website allows veterans as well as active duty to buy goods super cheap. AKA a benchmade bugout for 106$
I just bought a serrated one for 115 got it Saturday and it hasn’t left my pocket love it wondering why I waited so long
I own several Benchmade knives but always grab one from other manufacturers when I have the choice. I guess you either are a Benchmade guy, or you aren't. I gravitate much more towards Spyderco or even Cold Steel (the non-crazy models). Anyway, that's just me. Thank you for the video and all the best!
Fair enough! Thanks for sharing!!
I have been waiting for this video for a long time
Sweet!!! Hope it answered your questions!
I’ve had the M4 bailout since December 2021, I’ve loved it since the first day I got it. Great for food prep! If you like this knife, I HIGHLY recommend the upgraded version of the Freek in M4, that’s by far my favorite benchmade. That thing is a tank, Dutch Bushcraft Knives did a test on the benchmade freek in m4 and batoned a brick in half with it and the blade survived. Couldn’t recommend enough! Good video though!
G'day Kayra, I have the "standard" Freek and love it too. S30 or 35 is the sweet spot for price to performance and corrosion resistance, ..... for my climate anyway; and quite light weight too with the half steel liners, I assume the M4 version is not full liner either ?
Anyway, not hard to baton a brick in half with just about anything, even another piece of hard timber will probably do it, if you hit it hard enough, but I guess your point is edge retention as a result, ........... fair enough ....... though we are talk'n folders here. I'm all for hard core testing of fixys, for hard core applications, but I do question whether one really needs high end blade steel, (at a high end price), ....... for a folding pocket knife. You mentioned food prep for example, ....... have you tried an Opinel for a few bucks ?
Cheers Duke.
Totally agree, I got one of the M4 first production run Freeks, and then later the matching mini-Freek. I like the larger one better, and like you I think it's my favorite BM as well.
Saw that vid...it performed amazingly! Just remarkable toughness!!
Yeah, DBK put that knife through the wringer and barely scratched it@@ Very impressive
Thank you for sharing, I was always on the fence on purchasing this blade, and now I’ll buy it. 🔪🔪🔪🗡️⚔️
Hope it serves you well
I got the gear pattern rockscale design backspacer and a mirror polish edge on mine. She’s expensive but pretty sexy.
You should do a video of ALL your knifes!
I bought the 3V Bailout then (kinda hated it right out of the box) then upgraded to AWT scales about $245 all said and done. Now beautiful aluminum handles and dumb pommel delete. Haven't put it to any kind of hard use but currently one of my favorite knives to edc.
I just can't get there with the bailout. At that price, there's a lot of great competition.
@@nica2411 I’ve been on an aluminum scales kick for a bit now. The AWT blue with the grey coated blade just looks amazing together imo. Just ordered some OG scales for my g-10 deka will put it into about that same price range. Most in that range will be good quality just comes down to aesthetics and preferences at that point.
Nice knife! I noticed you referred to this several times as a crossbar lock that is actually a different lock style from Lyle Brunckhorst of Bronks Knives. he calls it the XROSS BAR and it predates the Axis lock a really cool design and very strong.
Nice, I will have to check it out! Thanks
Benchmade prices have gone crazy. So many more similar knives out there for much less money.
they're charging titanium money for aluminum
I reprofiled mine to a drop point and if I had to choose one folder this would be it
My advice you should grab you a super freek.... the M4 freek is truly BMs best daily carry knife.
Had a super freek don’t like the ergos
I Love my Benchmades , But I bought the First Run of the Bailout when Benchmade Dropped the HRC on the 3V steel for some Mind Boggling Reason and the blade doesn't hold an Edge for Crap , and I'm Still Pissed about it and it's a shame because I like the Knife but Never carry it for that reason , Benchmade should have done a Recall on Them in my Opinion.....🤬
I heard that steel was soft
Well, I hope they didn’t also drop the HRC on the new batch of Bailouts they did in 3V for the 2023 Shot Show, because I just ordered one. We’ll see, but if we I was in your shoes I’d be pissed as well. Luckily the first one I bought was this green M4 model, and it’s hard and sharp.
Best BM knife. Hands down their best knife.
Aaron I have a feeling you would've liked the taggedout better..it's got the crooked river blade profile with the bugout handle..I don't mind the plastic handle it's proven itself over and over again I've been using the bugout a couple years now for work
Nice!! I will have to check it out this year
It's hard to get the "perfect" knife and flashlight. I keep thinking, "this is it!", and a few weeks later, it's "nah".I think that's how the collecting got started.
After many years of use my g10 spidy hole grip was finally lost .... Went to my local blade shop and tried a few to find a replacement and it's not the same ... It feels like Benchmade is not the same
At 4:58 I thought you broke the blade lol I was watching you stabbing the log and wiggling the knife and then I heard clicking. Once I rewatched it I realized you were just open and closing the blade while talking
If a pocket knife is going to change your life you should change your life.
Great review
Benchmade lost me with their ridiculous pricing… There are better knives for the $ nowadays.
I have an adamas folder that I love.
Got one 2 years ago for 230$ Scary how much all the best knives have gone up.
Yep, I recall 2-2.5 years ago full MSRP was $221. At that I thought it was $30-$40 overpriced.
I carried a CQC 7 with a similar blade except a single bevel. It's the best feeling knife in my large collection, but I didn't like the way the blade worked. I went to a Carson M16
M4 isn't tougher than 3v... however due to having a higher hrc it should have higher edge stability.
El acero 3V que dureza tiene. Se arregló la situación de acero blando?. Un saludo 🇪🇸
I love Benchmades but I miss the Barrage or Triage even the old 154cm HG550. All this new stuff just doesn't hit the same way as the Bedlam or 275 Adam's or Contego hit back 10 years ago
I honestly feel like these are mainly overpriced. Especially the the hogue deka v2 I’m magnacut being able to be found for around $100. The deka smashed both the bugout and bailout in every area. With the addition of Original Goat scales, benchmade gets buried.
Everything Benchmade is overpriced.
Everything BM IS overpriced, but the Deka FRN is going to run you at least $130-$140 shipped. Then what, another $100 for Goat scales if they have them in stock? So you're over the price of this M4 blade at that point, and this is larger and heavier duty than any lightweight Bugout.
Magnacut is all the rage now for some reason, but other than it having much better corrosion resistance and being easier to sharpen, M4 has far superior edge retention and the exact same toughness. Both of those are more important to me, since I take care of my blades to make sure they don't corrode, and have diamond hones and know how to use them.
If you don’t like the tanto, rivers edge cutlery will regrind it for you before it’s shipped so it’s a drop point
Great info!!
I wish CZcamsrs would state the price right up front, but then I guess they wouldn’t get the views
I wish they would do the 3v with the aluminum handle. Thats the only thing stopping me from getting it. I don't have anything against m4 i just prefer 3v. Especially for that little extra corrosion resistance. And 3v done right for a folder say hrc 62 has very high edge stability and is still extremely tough.
AWT scales
I've had both, got rid of the 3v bailout because i didn't like how the blade's edge was holding up. Never had problems with my m4 bailout tho. Don't get me wrong, I love 3v, but not on small slim blades.
I have the bailout in 3V with the frn handles, and I love it! I carry it a lot in my pocket. Wanted to get the M4 with the aluminum scales, but it was just too expensive. $230 CAD for the 3V one and $345 CAD for the M4.
But definitely a great knife!
I have no problem with the M4 coated steel.. That stuff holds up so well and is tough as nails.. I would rather see G-10 scales though
G-10 would be a great future option
I love mine. Decided to throw out my warranty to slap some titanium scales on it and get rid of that dumb pommel. Worth it in my opinion. One of my favorite knives now.
Sounds awesome
What did the titanium give you? Was it just cosmetic?
Yeah that’s basically it. The rock scale designs titanium scales almost perfectly match the blade color then I polished the hardware and back spacer to give it a dark gray/ chrome look. I think it all looks really good especially with a polished edge
For that price there are way to many quality fixed blades that are a lot tougher and dependable
I’d much rather have M4 over Magnacut. M4 has far better edge retention and is the exact same toughness as Magnacut. The only thing better about Magnacut is it’s easier to sharpen and has much better corrosion resistance. But I know how to sharpen and don’t let my blade corrode, so I’ll go with M4 every time.
In Australia, it is $430.
Every benchmade Ive bought has been worth it .
Nobody:
Benchmade: $ $ $ $ $
The CRKT M-16 Tanto has a similar shape.
If the knife is not made from materials found in another galaxy, I don't want it 👍👍⚓⚓🇺🇲🇺🇲
the right size for me. M4 would be great on that one. as far as i remember Carbon and Vanadium Carbides make the steel hard, not tough.
Sorry, this is my first use with the steel. I am going off my experience with this knife and data, I research.
High Toughness: This steel is extremely tough and scores higher in this area than other popular steel variants. Harder steels are indeed less tough. Thus, you may be wondering why M4 is both tough and hard. This steel is tough because of PM technology and high vanadium and tungsten content. The high level of toughness justifies why it is a tool steel. A CPM- M4 steel knife blade will not chip or break easily while under any lateral force.
@@gideonstactical thanks for your reply.
well, you could heat-treat 5Cr to 60HRC, but it would be as brittle as ceramic. special case is 14C28N where the hardness is improved with Nitrogen (the N in the name). Manganese (Mn), Silicon (Si), Nickel (Ni), and Copper (Cu) are added to increase strength of the steels by forming solid solutions in ferrite.
but key is still the heat treatment. good example is Sanrenmu who get their 8Cr to 59HRC without getting brittle. no chipping but rolling. not many can do that.
Give me a Spyderco Endura 4 K390 any day.
