I love how tired and sad and bored and yet sort of “tiredly steeled” he sounds. He’s a very sympathetic character for a perpetrator of genocide. I liked his voice in the trailer where he sounds more confident and sort of taunting, but I like this even more.
He's just like Morgot, tired and alone, betrayed and broken, yet still stay loyal and keeping the promise to the mother they love, even if she abondant them all. Such tragedy.

His life has no meaning anymore. He was banished, shunned by his own mother who gave him his reason for living. He can only cling to his sense of identity, which is also an illusion, as he is too, like us, devoid of light, without his eye, he is a shadow of what once was. Truly fitting, for the lord of the Shadow Realm.

He's way more based than the new incestuous LeGarde, and way more sympathetic. Then again anything that's not RadIka or Gideon deserves sympathy, even the Dung Eater.

He ended up cursing Marika, but he still asked for forgiveness, as if he expected something from her, as if he loved her like a good son, expecting the same love in return. I've never felt so bad for a demigod since Morgott. It's just sad.

It's more like he doesn't question Marika until the moment of his death. He doesn't curse her because he both loves and hates her but because this is the moment he realizes he's truly been abandoned. In a way him cursing Marika is a small victory against her control over him, only it's already to late
The entire point is that Marika also believes she wasn't right, so she shattered the Elden Ring and went against the Golden Order and the Greater Will. All so a new Lord may arise and create one that is better. Marika used to blindly follow the Golden Order and the Greater Will because she believed it was all for the greater good in the end. Her faith in the Golder ORder only started wavering as things continued on without improving, her church dialogue explicitly points that out.
Also. His army’s motto seems to be “Those stripped of the grace of gold shall all meet death in the embrace of Messmer’s Flame.” And I love how he says this line verbatim instead of “owning it” by saying “My Flame”. To me it seems like the line is a “mandate” given to him by Marika, essentially a role he’s supposed to play, his “purpose”, and so he says that line to himself to sort of “get in character” and keep playing the role he was assigned. See someone stripped of the grace of gold? Kill them! Does he himself want to kill them? That doesn’t matter! This also ties into the stilted, performative way he says “Mongrel Intruder.” at the start. His heart’s not in it, lol. I also think the way he says things like “bereft of light” and “stripped of the grace of gold” alludes to how those things are also true of himself, and I also think his voice quavers a tiny bit the first time he says “death” in “shall all meet death”. He clearly has questions about the validity of his assigned “purpose”, but he isn’t capable of questioning it, perhaps because he was programmed at such a young age. But he’s tired…

These are stellar observations, and the fact that these observations can be abstracted from such little dialogue, goes to show how well written and well delivered the lines were. Absolutely brilliant dialogue and voice acting. I think Messmer is the best voice acting FromSoft has ever done.
I like how quickly he recovers from the pain of gouging out his own eye. Barely a tremble in his voice once its done. Despite being a seal, it really felt like an actual eye. It just shows how he's been in constant pain since birth - he's so accustomed to it that catching his breath after the fact feels just like pulling out a splinter.

Not until moment of realization that he will never achieve Grace, that however hard he fights for the Erdtree, the Erdtree will never have him. He who was the first of Marika’s children and by that virtue should have been the most loved l, respected, and honored, yet by fate of his curse is doomed to be the most despised and forgotten.

The amount of self-loathing and sadness that the voice actor conveys in Messmer is so awesome. He's easily the most identifiably human of all of the demigods. "O lightless creature... embrace thine oblivion, as shall I" is probably my favorite death line in the game now, because of how both the writing and delivery of the line perfectly encapsulates how tragic his character is, and that he sees both the Tarnished and himself as being doomed. The phase 1 line is delivered like he has been forced to say it thousands of times, and he has just become numb to it now. He's doing it as a duty for Marika, even though he was cast aside and loathed because of his curse. And he hates the flame, so he doesn't say "my Flame", but "Messmer's flame" instead, almost as if he refuses to embrace it. Letting go of that duty of enforcing the purge that Marika gave him means he has to accept that he's the monster that everybody says he is, and hence why he embraces his own oblivion in phase 2. If there was any single character in the game that made me hate Marika, it's definitely him.
So, did Marika "leave him on read" on purpose, or because she was imprisoned in the Erdtree after she tried to shatter the Elden Ring? He might not even be aware that she simply can't tell him to stop anymore.
She sent him and his army to genocide the Land of Shadows, and then trapped them in there. All over the DLC you can find hints of this, like soldiers praying to her that she’ll embrace her son and bring them home again.
For having so few lines, he has quickly become one of my favorite characters across the souls series. Idk why, but something about his character and story really resonates with me. Probably the mommy issues lol.
I want an hour long video of Messmer reading classical poetry that I can put in the background while doing some drawing or sleeping. Curse Marika for sentencing this poor snake-y boy to this horrible fate

"O lightless creature... embrace thine oblivion, as shall I" is probably my favorite death line in the game now, because of how both the writing and delivery of the line perfectly encapsulates how tragic his character is, and that he sees both the Tarnished and himself as being doomed. The phase 1 line is delivered like he has been forced to say it thousands of times, and he has just become numb to it now. He's doing it as a duty for Marika, even though he was cast aside and loathed because of his curse. And he hates the flame, so he doesn't say "my Flame", but "Messmer's flame" instead, almost as if he refuses to embrace it. Letting go of that duty of enforcing the purge that Marika gave him means he has to accept that he's the monster that everybody says he is, and hence why he embraces his own oblivion in phase 2. If there was any single character in the game that made me hate Marika, it's definitely him.

So, did Marika "leave him on read" on purpose, or because she was imprisoned in the Erdtree after she tried to shatter the Elden Ring? He might not even be aware that she simply can't tell him to stop anymore.
She sent him and his army to genocide the Land of Shadows, and then trapped them in there. All over the DLC you can find hints of this, like soldiers praying to her that she’ll embrace her son and bring them home again.
