Gandhi was more a symbol of India's struggle for independence rather than being the actual reason for it.
The Civil Disobedience Movement and the Quit India Movement were genuine flashpoints that stoked the popular sentiment for a desire for freedom from the British.
BUT all of this would have still not worked and would have squashed by the British had it not been for Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. It was his efforts, the Indian National Army and the public hanging of its three generals is what was the set the sun on the British occupation of India.
This is not my conjecture but a written admission by Prime Minister Clement.

Thank you to Dave Chapelle for his clarity about Gandhi. Gandhi united people who had been purposefully divided against the most brutal regime the world had ever known, which is the true reason he is viciously attacked both in India and outside. He brought the poorest of the poor into the movement for India's freedom. Are their critiques from the Ambedkrites, followers of Bose, Bhagat Singh? Yes. But these figures did not accomplish what Gandhi did and that's the hard truth.
Anybody seeking to learn the truth about Gandhi should study the works of ES Reddy who was the leader of the UN special committee against apartheid at the UN as well as the writings of W.E.B. Du Bois. And don't take the word of Arundathi Roy and Obadele Kambon who never even met him, look at Mordecai Johnson, Howard Thurman, John Dube, James Lawson, and William Stuart Nelson just to name a few.

Nobody can dismiss the fact that Ghandi was highly influential and motivational to the Indian people, following his 21 years of campaigning in South Africa. He inspired the people to rebel peacefully but defiantly. He did a lot for women's rights and to remove untouchable as a caste. He aimed to make India a fairer country. He abjectly failed. India is a racist country. Ask any indian that has a slightly darker skin tone.
He failed to cure Indians' internal racism. All racism is disgusting, but racism amongst a single nation based on skin tone has to be the most illogical and obscure form of bias.
Of course Ghandi was a great man. He was not able to change the mindset that allowed a foreign power to lead the country. India was never invaded and defeated. The Dutch and English traders were invited to work with some of the elite of India to help them consolodate their rule. It was a power share at first. Granted the century of Empire was total rule, however it was founded on the power greed of Ranjit Singh. His army was more than big enough to fight his own wars, but he needed the English technology of war. India was the world superpower in the 16th century. England a fledgling power, that went to India to beg her indulgence in trading with them.
Ghandi failed to break the financial connection with India and England. England gave back India because of the working classes of England voting in a Labour government committed to freeing the colonies.
Ghandi did not drive the English out. They left. India then became the third world and has stayed at the head of the race to the bottom Ever since.
