    The last guitar that shocked me with how much I loved it was the EVH Wolfgang Standard. Its pretty affordable, but I love every single bit of that thing. And I just bought it on sale for fun, just to have a Floyd Rose guitar to shred on. But it does everything well. When I went shopping for a PRS SE, I tried everything in the store (about 40 SE's) and the gold top just jumped out. Never heard about the DGT. I did zero research beforehand on purpose, to go in "clean". This shop had no prices on the guitars so I just got the best one for me, which was the DGT SE. It is shockingly good. It was also one of the most expensive SE, oh well.. I'm very happy. So happy in fact, my Gibson LP is for sale.

    Shawn, I bought a gold top DGT SE a few weeks ago. After changing to my preferred string type and gauge, and adjusting the pickup heights, the guitar has distinguished itself as one of the best instruments I’ve purchased in some time. I can’t really explain exactly why that is, but it just fits me and my style of playing like a glove. When Paul Smith said that David Grissom wanted his guitar to sound like Duane Allman on the “Live At The Fillmore East” album, I understood exactly what he meant. I was a junior in high school when that album came out, and practically wore down the grooves. That sound never left me. I’m sure I could coax that kind of tone out of other guitars, but the DGT has it in spades. I normally prefer my tone to have a nice bite in the top end, but after playing the DGT, I’m starting to enjoy a “rounder” timbre, especially out of the bridge pickup. Adding a smidge of delay and reverb, I get a lovely singing tone-kind of like Ella compared to Bessy Smith.
    Thanks for taking the time to put out a solid review. After hearing you play, I need to go grab my guitar!

    Love everything you do Shawn! This video (a long with David Grissom 's) convinced me to buy one of these, even though I was prs resistant. I have 30 guitars, all good to great. My new dgt-se is AMAZING!!! The pickups are by far the best I've ever played. From one to ten on the volume knob there is more cleanup, more range of tones and more clarity than I've ever heard...did I mention, the tremolo is perfect. If I paid 3,4 or 5 times more for it, I wouldn't send it back...in my opinion, you could spend many times what this cost, (and I have,) and it would be very doubtful that you would get a better guitar. Thank you so much!!!

    You’re making the DGT SE sound super amazing there. Godly tones.
    I love my goldtop DGT SE. Had it for about a month now. Changed the strings to lighter gauge than what it arrived with and adjusted the setup to suit. Changed to PRS SE locking tuners (absolutely not needed, I just wanted to) and swapped the stock knobs for lampshades. Surprisingly (perhaps) that change has made a difference. The stock knobs do the job but the lampshades are so much nicer to handle and adjust and much better grip for the coil tap pull.
    I think it’s the pups that really make it. I mean everything feels good on it so it is nice to have in the hand but the pups just make love to my amp and pedals. They are very responsive and very articulate (IMO). I can’t get a bad sound out of it. It makes me grin every time I pick it up.
    Of course that is my experience and opinion. I would suggest trying it first if you can, to make sure it is right for you. I know it’s not always possible and they are not easy to find in stock anyway. Not at the moment at least.

    Great guitar? Sure. BUT, I appreciate Shawn's honest review and I'm so glad that he pointed out some of the differences between the two models. If the SE is that good and I'm ultra dedicated I'd seriously try and put forth the extra money to attain the premium model. My experience in life has taught me that I've never regretted choosing higher quality as opposed to choosing the cost saving option. No doubt, though, that the SE gets close for a lot less, which would obviously be a better choice for a lot of players whom are not nearly on Shawn's level...like me.

    • @CJZM7777
      @CJZM7777 Před rokem +2

      Yes, I am sure the core models are much better but hard for me to justify spending $4K+ as I am only a home hobbyist. I also wouldn't feel comfortable taking a really expensive guitar out to play in public. It's great there are lots of great guitars under $1K. The PRS S2 line is also great under $2K.

    • @ShawnTubbs
      @ShawnTubbs Před rokem +5

      Thanks for watching and for chiming in!

    • @fr3ak1shh
      @fr3ak1shh Před rokem +2

      I think it’s a bit absurd to buy a guitar for $4k+, unless it’s custom made by a personal friend or something of the like. But a factory made guitar for $5k? No thanks.
      That’s my problem with PRS guitars. You either have to spend ungodly amounts on a core, or have to compromise for their more affordable models (which are still pretty expensive if we’re honest). And I hate feeling like I’m compromising.
      So now I opt for brands that have affordable flagship models. Quality-wise, they’re probably not as good as a core PRS, but a core PRS wouldn’t be a direct upgrade because it’s different. So you’re not really compromising, just going with something completely different.
      I know my opinion doesn’t matter, but with how much the PRS prices have skyrocketed, it makes me scared to get too into their guitars. I bought my CE 24 for $2k in 2020, and now it’s going for $2630. And their hardcase went from $200 to $280. Those are pretty massive spikes for no changes or improvements…
      Great sounding guitars, but you really have to look at what you value. I don’t enjoy playing my $2000+ guitars as much because there’s a sense of guilt. Attached. So I’m selling them! Budget guitars for me from now on, unless I start getting into gigging a lot more and decide I want a custom guitar. We’ll see what happens down the road!

    Pretty much every review I've seen of this DGT SE guitar has been highly favorable. I wish they did the same top carve as the core model, even for the gold top, but if it plays and sounds good the visual difference is a moot point. I've been a David Grissom fan for years, and lusted for one of his DGT guitars. The prices of the core models have really increased in recent years, so the SE model is an affordable option that really appeals to me.

    Thanks Shawn. I always love these type of reviews. Squire CV vs Fender, Epiphone vs Gibson USA, PRS SE vs PRS S2 vs Core, etc. I have been very fortunate to have been able to own the whole gamut and what these ultimately come down to is the law of diminishing returns. And PRS does a very good job of keeping the important things and saving production cost in those un-important things as you pointed out. Three piece back, un-routed backplates and under knobs etc. Overall look, feel, playability, set-up and sound is more value than the three to four times the price core model. But having core models myself, it's nice to have them too if it's within your budget. But in the end, it's more important that people who can't justify the core models have a quality guitar that they can become a better player on. Personally, I have found myself selling my USA and Core models off and hanging on to my more budget. guitars as they are more than enough for my needs. They have become that close in quality now and we can all be happy about that!

    I have a coffee burst SE and for the $900(?) I paid for it I doubt that once could do much better. I'm a mixer and play keyboards and bass and am now learning guitar. Sgo other than maybe upgrading the tuners I think the core PUs are fuller but the SEs seem to balance. All across the spectrum just fine. Great on midrange, too.
    If I were to upgrade the PUs it would cost $500 for the 50 15 LT set and I don't think I could justify it at my skill level. The neck was not bad at all right out of the box, and the frets are great. I did have to set the action but nothing serious other than me being picky. My other guitar - a Japanese Yamaha Revstar II I think is nicer (P90s) but twice as much. But I will not be giving up my PTR DGT SE do I guess that means I'm happy with it!

    Thx for the great and honest review. I have been a strat guy for years and still like it. Some years ago I bought my first PRS SE and after that I bought the 2nd one, the Custom 24 SE. There is definitely something special about PRS guitars, especially the neck. I like my PRS guitars and the C24 has been my main guitar for some years now. Seeing all the reviews of the DGT SE, I must say that I’am almost at the point of buying the gold top version. But I would like to know what the difference is between the DGT SE vs the Custom 24. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

      The DGT is a very different guitar for PRS. Different neck, different sound. It's pretty unique in their lineup so if you think you would like it based on videos, & would like something a little different from your Custom 24, you won't be disappointed.

      Agreed. The prices of the DGT have soared in recent years, so a simple gold top with moon inlays and the proper top carve would really interest me. I'm sure PRS looks hard at their market to determine which models remain core, or become S2 or SE series.

    I think I will be buying one in the near future, the core range is not wihin my budget. viewers might be interested to know that a few years back (not too many) the luthier who maintained my guitars (when I could afford the good stuff) showed me a block of beaitiful flame maple in its natural state he had bought. It was only £200 and he said he would get four really good tops out of it for some forthcoming builds. That works out at £50 a top for really stunning maple which would easily meet the PRS standard for a 10 top and beyond. So it has made me wonder that if a company like PRS with its better buying power, it making unbelievable profit on it's flame maple top guitars! Also, other manufacturers? I'm not knocking them in anyway at all, Iam just thinking about it.

    what i wish PRS would do is more solid colour guitars. i really dont care if the body of my guitar is made from 4 pieces put together (i believe it was phill mcknight who went through a se silver sky to show how many pieces that guitar was made from). solid colours can "hide" this, it will be cheaper to make and for a lot for us guitarist, price does or is becoming the deciding factor (its not about how much i want a guitar and not wanting it enough) but for me in australia, there is no chance im justifying paying $8000-10,000 for a guitar as a home guitarist

    It seems to be an excellent guitar, but I don't understand how it is a good value for the money because a guitar made in Japan, regardless of the brand, will likely be of equally good or even better quality. So is it really worth it, except if you really want the brand name? And I'm talking about guitars that are made in Japan, not necessarily Japanese brands, it could also be Fender. Maybe it's because you all live in the USA? Where I live, guitars made in Japan are much cheaper than US models and of better quality too. If anyone knows more about this, I'm curious.

    I like that you don't nitpick things that don't make a difference when it comes to function. A lot of reviewers are great at finding distinctions without a difference. Not you. Do you think the difference in the top carve might have something to do with the top being laminated? I think it might be hard to get that laminate to conform to the carve of your original DGT.

  • @timwhite5562

    Its a one-piece neck, at least that's how it's spec'd, which is a big deal since even the S2s aren't a one-piece. I haven't had a chance to check one out but I know the SE body is quite a bit thinner than the core, which would indicate that it is a one piece neck. The Paul's Guitar SE is also a one-piece, and that is also a noticeably thinner body than the rest of the PRS line. It's easier to do a one-piece neck with a smaller body since you don't need to start with as big a piece of wood for the neck to be able to get the neck heel and tenon carved from it, which is less material and labor. The S2 McCarty line originally dealt with that by doing a one piece neck with a two piece neck heel, though they moved to using a scarf joint and a one piece heel, which I think is a far better way to go (I never liked the idea of a two piece heel on a set neck since it's where the two major pieces of the entire guitar meet and is going to play a large role in the ultimate sound). The only thing on the SE Mccartys I don't like is the laminated neck. I don't have an issue with them persay, but it's a pretty large deviation from the other 594s, the S2 or the Core.
    For me the Achilles heel of a lot of PRS models are the control layouts, and for the life of me I don't know why they still insist on the Master volume/Master Tone layout. I've been repairing guitars for close to 20 years, so I know I'm not alone in that. It's especially a questionable choice with the Hollowbody models, since sizeable portion of ES335 players (who they're largely completing for) pretty much live in the center position, with both pickups on and using the volume controls to dial them in. It was a deal breaker for me when they came out, though they finally did 594 Hollowbody II with the 4 controls. Ironically with the two piece bridge it necessitated doing a different internal structure than all the other Hollowbody models they have, which kind of pits then against themselves.
    As nice as the SE 594s definitely are, the neck design of the DGT, as well as the dual volume/master tone IMO makes it the most appealing model of the SE line by a mile.
