  • "Mul Mantra" comes from the Sikh religion that originated from the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent. The singer who introduced me to it suggested I listen to it performed by Snatam Kaur, an American woman who studied devotional Indian singing in India and now sings this music in a New Age style. I'm a big fan of Snatam Kaur's song "Ong Namo", but hadn't known this song. The lyrics express faith in one creator, and the Sikh religion, according to Wikipedia, emphasizes faith and meditation, belief in the divine unity and equality of all humankind; and serving others and striving for honesty and justice to create a more beneficial and prosperous world.
I'm playing the frame drum in the video, which in the ancient Mediterranean world was played by women during spiritual services. Now the frame drum is played around the world, and its history leaves a rich legacy of women of performing percussion during spiritual songs.
