New E63S VS Old E63S : Can the Real AMG Hammer please stand up?!

- RBR VS Mode Episodes are coming at you with a vengeance!! After the awesome Taycan 4S vs RWD episode, it’s time to do a proper petrolhead hero car battle : #AMG E63S vs E63S. Old vs New! Loud vs Subdued. Analog vs Digital!
Not a huge amount has changed technically speaking as far as performance goes on the E63S. It maintains the brutal 4.0 V8 bi turbo, and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G. And of course the famed AMG 4matic+ 100% variable all wheel drive system with drift mode. Both E 63 S produce 612 BHP, 850NM and 0-60 in 3.4 - but we test both to be way quicker, so stick around for the launch controls!
Minor differences: the interior gets a new where and the awesome MBUX, and the facelift gets AMG dynamics, which influences the ESP system based on your requirements or driver skill. And the main bit is adjustments to the AMG ride control suspension, which has been modified to be more comfortable. Oh, and the exhaust is now muted due to EU regs since then.
That means, for the AMG Addict, the prefacelift E63S is basically the same car, just louder, less interior tech and arguably a more aggressive design!!

I never forget a ride from switzerland to the netherlands, 500miles autobahn in a 585hp e63 s w212.. empty street because of football germany played that night.. many minutes above 300km/h..

Hi, E63S owner here. What a great review - thanks for sharing it and for being balanced in the assessment of the two cars. I bought my 2018 'Premium Plus' brand new (so obviously a pre-facelift - see my profile pic) and remain really pleased with it. Being a mug for anything AMG, naturally I checked out the facelift - I was aware of the slightly less excting engine note, but what also put me off was the frontal appearance, which to me looks much softer - I definitely agree the pre-face lift looks more muscular.
The enhanced info tech I can live without - when my car was being serviced, I was loaned a high-end Merc SUV which came with the latest technology - and I really didn't like it, despite having a few days to play with it. Its the driving feel and expeirence that is more important to me. My 2018 feels similar to an E39 M5, obviously way quicker and more advanced. I don't doubt the slightly more refined ride quality in the face lift, but I'm unconcerned by that too - it's an E63S, it shouldn't ride like an E350 and besides I like the enhanced feel it provides. Mine has the bucket seats and I'm a well-built 6-footer and can honestly say that I've never felt uncomfortable, even after many hours of driving. So if anyone is concerned the pre-facelift buckets, don't be - they are far more comfortable than they might look.
So I really can't see any reason to change my car, I absolutely love it. However, despite being almost fully optioned, it doesn't mean I wouldn't be averse to upgrading certain aspects of it. Mine came with the Burmester sound system - can this be upgraded to the high-end version, for example. I was interested to gather from the video that it would be possible to change the steering wheel for that in the late pre-facelift car. My original steering wheel was replaced under warranty as the part of the stitching was coming apart (in a the hardly-touched 11 o' clock position - very strange). I asked for the latest wheel, but was told by Mercedes that it was not compatible.
That seems untrue judging by the review, but then Mercedes aren't the most helpful company around.
Could you (or anyone else) let me know of what else might be upgradeable, please. I draw the line at exhausts and remaps, etc. The only after market product that doesn't trigger engine warning lights is the Brabus example, but to my ears, isn't much better in terms of sound given the amount it csts (rather alot...). Anyway, mine sounds great as it is and is as fast as you could want to go. Any thoughts welcome.
You can change completely everything to your pre facelift to the facelift ones. Steering wheel, MBUX, Burmester sound system, even headlights, taillights, new bumpers.
Mercedes does not do that of course.
I have the same e63s, you can get a new steering wheel and carbon fibre everything, theres lots of websites for modifications and upgrades but beware, they're more than likely aftermarket parts

The new one with the vertical grille and classic E tail lights make it look amazing. But the old one looks spectacular too
waited for this review for a long time, as I've got the pre-lift version of the car. I suppose I'll keep it for a little longer :)

Great vid Raz. Love my pre face lift E63s, instead of changing it after two years of ownership I have gone with downpipes and a map to 740bhp and 1100nm. I have no idea what I'll replace this car with as its simply so good at everything. One major gripe for me though, is spec and additional features. Why on Earth do Mercedes not let UK customers spec rear entertainment, massage or cooled seats, and a heated steering wheel - all of which are available on US cars as example (not so sure on the heated wheel but still!). An M5 LCI with the Ultimate pack trumps the E63s in terms of toys which is frustrating. Still.. I love mine to bits!

Honestly Mercedes need to stop changing their design so frequently. It’s negatively effecting values and dating cars too quickly. This is a perfect example. Look at the m5 facelift, just some new lights and infotainment, not a whole new car
C'mon Spence, they'd never sell as many if they did that. For example you pay $150K for a 2021 and I come along and pay $75K for a 2018 that looks exactly like yours. Would you be happy about that? Or some other guy goes and buys a 2021 for $25K and his looks just like ours.

I just traded my 2019 C63s for a low mileage 2018 E63s for the sole reason of getting the pops and crackles back. It was startling how quieter the 2019 was vs. my 2017 C63s. The only time you could get a hint of them was when downshifting at 5500 rpm. When I mentioned it to the service rep they just looked at me. That's not a problem any more. Couldn't be happier with the purchase!

Same here, mine is a 2019 E63s with Performance seats and all Carbon steering wheel. Best car i‘ve ever had.

Absoluetly brilliant video!! I personally think the pre-facelift strikes the perfect balance by being sharp, muscular and agressive while remaining effortlessly elegant and beautiful.
I also want to add that although the pre-facelift variant does not have MBUX, you still have a voice controlled assistant system called Linguatronic. It has over 450 lines of voice commands that it can recognise and react to. e.g., you can change the ambient lighting, turn the A/C on or off, change the temperature, fan speed, you can even turn lights on and off just by saying it.
The main difference is that it isn't as smart as the new voice assistant and is summoned or cancelled at the flick of a switch rather than a "Hey Mercedes".

Preface lift is definitely more aggressive, being abit biost due to owning one lol, love both but more with the aggressive look! Did order a facelift but found a preface lift in magno grey and not many around, so it's an investment!
W212/2 is still the best e63 ever in my opinion. Looked so mascular compared to the new ones

I am looking at the E63S pre facelift 2018-2019 with the nice steering wheel and normal seats:) and and and an important detail that I really find myself needing is the ability to control the front passenger seat through the driver seat buttons! The facelift lost that ability....

Owner here. My first car was m3 e92, beautifull v8 sound, but in 2018 I bought from my good friend this masterpiece. Since then she always deliver me the same joy as at the time I first sat in my e63s. Mad gorgeous car, incredible performance and a lot of adrenaline always, always. It's been 6 years already, but I'm still in love with her and won't change her on anything else on the market! ❤ best V8 car ever, i assure you, sound in car with opened roof is out of this universe. I love you mercedes!

Those AMG Performance Seats are some of the best on the market. Tried it on GT53, it's comfortable enough for long trip or in lengthy traffic but very supportive when things get spicy. Maybe not in the same level as the Recaro Pole Position buckets on the likes of GT R PRO but for daily use it is the perfect balance.

Great review not only showing the restrictions the EU have imposed but also Mercedes lack of options for new top level cars. My new AMG GT4 door had very few configurable options. These are sold in packages forcing the customer to buy unrelated items: if I want heads up display I have to have night pack! If I want the 63s I can’t have split folding rear seats... there’s no way to personalise my car like Porsche or Bentley. Good car as it is, It could be so much better.

That pre-facelift E63S is a masterpiece. Traditional, muscly AMG design. Smooth, powerful V8, and INSANE sound. An absolute dream. I've had the opportunity to drive one twice. It is truly one of the great AMGs.

Videos don't do the pre-facelift justice, it sounds so damn loud/good in person. At least you can fix the sound of the facelift with an aftermarket exhaust 🔥
They both have the same exhaust. Just delete the OPF filter on the facelift and it will sound exactly the same.
He's saying the car regulators aren't letting you do those fixes.

Got a V10 M5 but I love the S63 long wheel base pre facelift with the last big AMG 5.5 Biturbo V8. Facelift W222 never, because of the small 4 Liter from the C(hick)-Class.
@@jonussmith7404 You are free to do whatever with the exhaust after buying the car, but you end up driving around with an illegal exhaust if he came with an OPF from the factory. That's why cars made up to 2018 are slowling becoming more popular than post 2018 cars, as 2018 is when those regulations took effect for most car brands in the EU.

Hi Raz, Jamie from Australia, I like the look of the new one, but I'm going for the pre facelift car, better seats, better sound, and as you say, where is the IWC Clock what are they thinking, the customer is paying, so what gives?
As for the new car, you'd ABSOLUTELY change that exhaust system, and those wheels look cheap, anyway that's my viewpoint on the old v new, great review once again, excellent 🙏👍
The forklift driver keeps wondering why he keeps leaving one of the cars there. Oddly enough the pre-facelift is gone when he comes back the last time. LOL
I daily a 2019 E63s, I took all the badges off the back. Diamond white with black interior. Massage seats and Burmiester High end options make this the perfect all rounder!

The pre-facelift looks like a beautiful woman, the recent is a completely different character, its angry and not that classie, more sporty.

Yeah, I agree. The front of the pre-facelift is so much more aggressive. The facelifted look a bit doll. But on the back the newer is much better. It looks more like the pre-facelifted estate on the lights.
I like the facelift exterior but the sound of prefacelift one is amazing and i can only afford the old one so old one it is for me 😄

@3:10 pre-facelift, the swoop up from the side of the grille up through the headlight and into the front wheel arches gives it a more squat ready to roar look. Personally I don't like the A grille compared to smiley face or whatever the old one was called.

The prefacelift is the best car on the market as an all rounder, cant wait to get mine in the months to come, going to be going big build with turbos however you can just remap with a decat and get phenominal figures. the best sounding v8 what an animal!!!
It crazy to me. I use to love the pre face lift when it came out and it was my dream car. I had the base E back then. Now I can afford the big boy and it’s hard. I love the sound of the old one, but it looks slightly dated to me now.
Totally agree with you on the missing IWC. Although I don't think it's the end of the world that a car like this has no mechanical luxury watch in it, it's a absolute shame to leave an obvious blank, an ugly nothing in the middle.
