Western Diamondback Rattlesnake wakes up suddenly!

- "Rattlesnakes use their rattle to warn others. They may rattle to indicate they are present so they won’t be stepped on, or they may rattle if cornered or harassed to warn that they may be about to strike." "Tail-rattling is mainly a defensive gesture; something they do when frightened."

Gotta love these guys. They're one of the few predators that do you a favor and make it very well known that they are there and don't want to be messed with
@Twiddly Stosh some snakes wiggle their tails rapidly and make noise with the leaves since they don't have a rattle. A fer de lance was doing that in my hands once during a processing thing
The sad part is that you'll often still get bit if you don't see them right away and accidentally hop around while trying to escape...Maybe you accidentally step too close or step on them, and they get scared
Chris, My dog was walking a few feet in front of me and a snake about 4’ in length came out of a small bush about 20’ feet away. No rattling! It moved rapidly and it bit my dog on its hind leg. The snake went rapidly back to the bush. I looked at my dog and sure enough to puncture wounds. I went closer a few feet away from the bush and saw 2 snakes intertwined. I first thought they were mating, but they were very aggressive. I drew my hand gun and fired a round into the bush. They separated and both went down different gopher holes. The one that attacked my dog was half way down the hole as I shot it in the middle of its back. About 12 rattles and an evenly spaced black and white tail. Indicating it was a Western Diamondback. The other snake was longer with no rattles and probably what’s referred to as a Bull Snake. I rushed my dog to the vet and he recovered. A $2000 expense. They don’t always rattle.
@@glynnellis6519 I don't claim to know what every animal does. Hope your dog is okay!
@@cpresto2 Thanks Chris. Just a heads up that’s all. I’ve had many encounters and every time they were defensive. So the one that got my dog was an exception.

Birds of a feather. Don't trust mine with a knife in the kitchen. Something says she'll gut me.

That dull roar is awesome, and not even a real roar, that's just the sound of it pulling air into its lungs to make itself look bigger and stabilize its stance! Snakes are fascinating.
Thank you so much for explaining the whoosh of air. That was more terrifying to me than the rattle!
It's really cool, it uses practically every tool it has at its disposal to intimidate a potential threat
Such a noble serpent. He warns others about the danger he poses before striking.
Ah yes he does it because he cares
Honor? In a snake. Inconceivable.
I mean yes and no. Snakes are just smart enough to know that if they tangle with larger creatures, they are probably getting killed like most of the time so they prefer not to fight things they have basically no chance of eating. They also have to save up the venom for their actual prey so they don't starve, so the warning has a bit a double purpose. It is way of saying "I have a gun, don't make me use it, I got other problems to worry about."
Rattlesnake won’t bite unless provoked. Their venom is very expensive and taxing to produce. They rather use it for hunting food then for self defense

It's a two way street in the animal kingdom. Mine is "piss off hippy snake" followed by a shovel to the head. The snake can then choose. If he wants a war, I'll win.
@@matt9c1or, yknow… just leave the snake alone ☠️
@@Spawn117 Denied
Very cool how the snake will give non-prey a "leave me alone" warning before they decide to bite. Cool animals.
They're like the badass gunslingers of the animal kingdom. Can definitely kill you but just wants to be left alone and will give you a good warning
They look cool too
Producing venom is often exhausting for their system.
Asked the person, YO... Whatchu doing here?
"When you're a noodle with a head the world is a scary place." Yeah, as if the elaborate camo wasn't enough of a "leave me alone", they also usually give fair warning. The thing is, though, that in any fight between something like a human and a snake, the human is going to win. Yes, said human may or may not die later if the snake is venomous and managed to bite you but that is the last resort of the snake to save it's own life. Despite what folklore or religious symbolism might suggest snakes are not malevolent or even angry creatures, they're afraid of you and don't want to die.

I absolutely love snakes. They're so misunderstood, feared, and wrongfully reviled. My dad used to have a 13.5 foot female red-tailed boa constrictor named Cleo (I think after Cleopatra). The only word he ever used to describe her (even as she got older and more aggressive due to being handled so much) was sweetheart. He loved that snake. Unfortunately he left her with a friend to watch her while he was gone and the friend sold her. This was 21 years ago when I was 2. Cleo used to sneak out of her cage at night and curl up in bed between my mom and dad for warmth. Strangely my mom was never afraid of her, although she does have pretty bad arachnophobia.
Sorry what there is more to the story then that his friend just sold her? Did your dad seek reimbursement i wud have just beat the guy so please wats the rest of the story

you don't think of rattle snakes needing a middle of the day kip!
From a 1 to a 10 in under a second.
It's about to shed/molt, too. Clouded eye scale/cap. It's called being in the blue. A snake in that phase can't see well and that condition usually increases their aggression (for self-defense).
But the reason it knew he was there right away was because of its heat pits, they rely heavily on them when in shed.
We call that here in tn dog days of summer! They shedding skin go blind as you say strike at anything.
@@Rryan8065 That's true, but the clouded eyecap is known to make them generally more aggressive w/ less provocation. Stands to reason. They can still thermally view prey/aggressors, but they're less secure in their overall safety by two eyecaps on top of it. Not always, either. They're all individuals, but in a general sense, a lot of snake people find it to be true.

@@betterdeadthanred4196 snakes are very misunderstood creatures notice how it didn't even try to go for a bite even tho its venomous if he tried this on a lion, wolf or tiger animals people think are cute and cuddly he would have his face shredded
Meanwhile In Science
If we killed them all, mice population would rise high. And I don’t think you’d like a mice infestation throughout your house because of it. Snakes are beautiful - yet deadly - creatures, and never aggressive. It is when you provoke that snake that it bites, and it bites if *really* needed to, seeing that a human being such as me and you are too big to swallow. Thus, it doesn’t label you as prey. So, it doesn’t want to waste its venom unless absolutely necessary which is, to a snake, a human being such as you provoking it.
Many snakes are also harmless, such as milk snakes, corn snakes, ball pythons (they’re known to be the most docile snake), garter snakes (friendly and curious little sneks), water snakes, and more.
You may want to kill them all, but in reality, these snakes are a massive part of the ecosystem, each serving a purpose to their ecosystems. Like wild snakes catching and killing mice, keeping the mouse population under control.
Moral of the story? Don’t wish death upon a species.

The West Diamond is a sleeping beauty when asleep, and a beast when awaken!
The snake wasn't a sleep, it was awake the whole time.
chuimon slp then why it just sat there and did nothing in the first place?🤔🤔
@Bj Blanks it did. The rattler has pits located near their nostrils that pick up thermal heat from predators or preys in close proximity of it. All pit vipers have them including this rattler . That"s one early detection, the second thing that I noticed from this rattler that it was alert was it's tongue flicking in and out. Check it closely. When a snake sticks it's tongue out it's grabbing what's emitted in the air molecules around it and sending the info back from it's tongue to what is a jacob's organ located in it's mouth for smell of a prey or predator. Rattlers don't have keen vision therefore rely on smell and thermal heat signatures from prey or predator. Also note that most pit vipers like rattlers, puff adders and Gabon Vipers are ambush predators. Which means they don't chase after prey they wait for prey to come to them, envenomate them (inject venom in to their prey to neutralize them for pursuing and swallowing). Rattlers are bad asses, they give a lot of time and noise before they strike in most cases. Believe me it knew the threat
and fired off a warning stance (the last one before biting).
chuimon slp I can only see the tongue after it going into its defensive stance, do you see it before that?
@@xxscootalooxx4431I fucked up on two things. I looked at it again and didn't see it, I thought I did, nope, tongue didn't flicker. Secondly the puff adder is not a pit viper. The other stuff I wrote is on point but the tongue I thought I saw flicker didn't actually flicker until after. Good point.

@@foolspeedahead do you live somewhere where there's a lot of people? Overtime those snakes might've gotten used to humans. Where I used to live you saw them before you ever heard them, and with rattlers it's supposed to be the opposite.
