- It is simple, if you have the confidence in your bike, you will go fast. Uphill, Flat and Downhill. Your wheels make the biggest difference to your bike's performance than anything else. Don't just spend what you can afford, and lighter is not better.
In this video I explain from an experienced rider and mechanics perspective, why I was so impressed with the Fast Forward Ryot wheel set.
From a pure componentry perspective these tick all the boxes for ongoing reliability and repairability. Superbly well built, presented and packaged. You can be proud to own these wheels.

Just pulled the trigger on the 240exp hub 44. Looking forward to trying them out in due course. Many thanks.
Best bike channel on CZcams. No BS, no bias. Thanks
Thank you
This is the kind of information we ALL need! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
I absolutely love my FFWD Ryot wheels with DT Swiss 240 hubs. They are just slightly heavier than some of the competition but they are amazing. Tubeless hooked wheels are much more confidence inspiring than the hookless trend.
Small weight penalty for the confidence and durability. Top wheels.
Never heard of FFWD Wheels.. but they are high on my shopping list now!
My local bike shop said FFWD Drift are great wheels, and so they ordered them and now they are on my bike. Lots of similarities with this video, although in my case the inner width is 24mm (for gravel bike) for tires 30-60mm. They seem to work great. Thanks for more information
Thinking of upgrading to a carbon wheelset, found your video very informative. Thanks for all the information.
Nice video, very relevant points for making a buying decision. I own 5 FFWD wheelsets (for 4 different bikes) and had not a single problem with any of them. With other (to be fair, cheaper) brands I did have several issues.
Another top notch bit of in depth expert advice to guide new wheel buying. And rusty nipples are certainly to be avoided at all costs.
Another +1 for FFWD. I've just bought a pair of F4R used and they're still good as new because they're so well built. The things are just so beautiful and yep you get the whole package. So good I'm looking at a second pair so I've got a summer and winter set.
My girlfriend just ordered some Ryot 44 with DT350 hubs for her all year round bike,. So many choices out there but this video helped to choose them! Definitely worth the extra little weight for brass nipples especially if they're gonna be used through winter in the north. You better be right about these, Paul 😀
Nice choice Nick.
I’ve got a pair of FFWD F6R (60mm rim brake) build quality is exceptional, super fast and was able to set up GP5000s tubeless with just a floor pump.
Just bought the 44s with 240hubs. Cant wait for them to arrive and get them going with the gp5000s! Thanks for the recommendation 👍
Great choice.
ffwd are the best, hand made in Holland and great support.
I have those same wheels and i adore them. However this is the third review that I’ve watched and they all had wheel bags yet mine didn’t come with a bag. I’m disappointed in that!
I guess the American warehouse didn’t get the sets with bags!
Love the wheels though!
Good point, but since i'm on a budget i'm getting cystom wheels build on dt350, xrays and Alu rims. When rims ware out i'll swap to carbons with same depth-35.
Ofc im a rim brake fanboy
Just bought them, I was opting for the tyro, but I got a good deal on a set of Ryot 44's
Nice.
Only recently came across your channel. Top stuff direct, honest to the point info, love it…. I’ve been looking for some new wheels, and seriously considering FFWD. I’ve been looking at the ryots and raws. Looking for an all rounder wheel, I spend time on pothole strewn roads and love climbing. Thoughts? P.S the new time Alpe du’huez frame looks nice :-)
I have only seen pictures. look slike an nice update of a classic.
Was going to purchase the ryot 44’s but the raw with dt Swiss 180 are now selling at the same price. Wondering if you have any insight into the pros vs cons of the raw over the ryot.
Thanks and love the channel. Always really insightful and set me on the path of going ffwd
Great review, thanks!
Strange things happen with prices these days. Bora WTO 45 (19 mm version) are 300 Euro cheaper than RYOT 44 on DT240.
Sounds like easy choice for Boras, isn't it?)
would be very interesting if you done a review on the Tyro wheels
Oh. We have some here. They are ok. But lots more competition in that spec for price.
Love the enthusiasm. Are there any time brake carbon rims you'd recommend? I have zero confidence in mine. Thank you!
You know. There really aren’t. Zipp probably made the best TT wheels for rim brake. That were full carbon. I can’t think of a brand doing alu wheels with carbon fairings anymore. I wouldn’t trust any full carbon wheels on a long mountain descent.
I wish they made a 28H rear
Hi there, Looking for a good set of wheels at a reasonable(ish) price. Following your views and reviews on the FFWD RYOTs i decided to go with the RYOT 44s on the DT Swiss 240 hub for my Trek Emonda. The whole galvanic corrosion was a real thing for me as ive no intention of paying over a grand to have a bunch of corrosion (or even the chance of). Will be pairing up with a set of Continental GP 5000 STRs
Couple that with the serviceability aspect and i kept coming back to FFWD and have now purchased after finding a pretty good deal.
Cant wait to get rolling on them !!
Nice. Well done.
For most things I know what I want but jeez choosing wheels is hard, just unnecessary too many choises. Why is it still so hard to make a wheel after all these years of evolution. So I really wanted this Ryot 44 but the lowest price I could find was 1350 euro with the dt240 hubs and that was really hard to justify for me, I'm riding for many many years and I always laught when people's paid that much of money on wheels, now I'm one off those people, I'm a little ashamed, 😊 but i went for the Bontrager Aeolus 37pro for1050euro, thx for making this video it helped a lot.
Where did you find those wheels with the 240 hub for 1350€? They are at least 1700€
@@Maxibsa on a dutch website, but the price went up already, maybe they made a mistake, but now on that website it is 1619euro and on another 1549euro
FFWD used to sponsor VacansSoleil. Debut TdF 2011. I have ridden the F6R for years. Love them.
I've got a pair of the Ryot 44 & 55 and love them. My only beef is that the 240EXP freehubs are a bit noisy
Get a little tub of the DT special grease and add a little more. Not too much.
@@Mapdec thanks for the tip
Great video ! What do you think of the Ryot 44 with the Fast Forward hub (DT Swiss 350 rebranded?) as less expensive version?
Ok. As long as you live close to a dealer and confident about hub parts in the future. Hub are good, but everything wears out. They are the same weight as a 350. The 350 version are meant as a bricks and mortar shop special
Very informative. This is what we all need, straight to the point and no unnecessary bs.
How do FFWD hubs compare to DT240? Are they any good? I think I have it narrowed down to either FFWD RYOT44/55 or Parcours Strade. Decisions, decisions...
The hubs are fine, just not as easy to get spares and upgrades as the DT. The ratchet is the same.
@@Mapdec Found a second hand (unused) pair of 55's with DT240 hubs for 1300 €, happy days. Thanks again for all the very useful info! 👍
Ordering these direct must incur VAT and import duty?
Would you also recommend the FFWD Tyro? I know they use their own hub but heard something about it just being a DT Swiss 350? Can't decide between the Tyro and the Zipp 303s
I have never had my hands on a tyro. Sorry.
your videos are great, thanks a lot. quick question, are the hookless rims easier to exchange the Tiers?
Exchange?
@@Mapdec sorry, I mean to remove the tiers when changing a tube or repairing the tier
Can you comment on the ffwd brand of hubs? The latest models appear to be a ratchet system and quite similar in price and weight to the dt swiss 350. Are they any good or would you recommend spending additional 300 € on the upgrade to 240 hubs?
They are good, they hold spares etc. You sometimes see FFWD on DT 350 hubs from retailers. The extra cost to the 240s would be marginally lighter and prove easier to change freehubs and end caps in say 5 years time.
I found your comments very informative and interesting. I am thinking of treating myself to some carbon wheels next year. I am going to add the FFWD to the short list, also considering the Zipp 303s. Which of these do you think would be the best option for everyday use, any other suggestions would be appreciated. It is probably worth mentioning I am 6'4" and 90kg.
Thanks Phil. I did a video of the 303s when it launched. It should be easy to find. A bit retro now. The 303s are going cheap online at the moment. As much as I really recomend the Pacenti and FFWD, the 303s prices are tempting. Just be prepared for rebuild and service costs. For all year, reliable use I have to sway to the FFWD with a DT Swiss hub option.
@@Mapdec Thank you so much for the prompt reply. I am definitely a fit and forget type of bike rider. I think I am leaning more towards the FFWD at the moment. I will also have a look at the Pacenti
Give us a call if you would like us to supply.
@@philipwoodhouse7371 you should pay attention to Mapdec Cycle Works comment about maintenance and service costs of Zipp wheels. I have a number of Wheelsets from this brand as I brought into their marketing hype before I knew better.
They are not maintenance free and require attention more regularly than my other Wheelsets to keep them running smooth. From a quality and finish perspective alone I think FFWD far surpasses what Zipp offer.
@@kidkarbon4775 Thanks that is very helpful. I have now taken Zipp of the list as I do not want to have to do lots of routine maintenance.
Thanks for the informative videos - I've watched some multiple times.
What's you opinion on mixed depth wheels ? I'm considering the 44 front, 55 back (bearing in mind I have a set of 35s for mountains and windy days)
55s are fine in wind these days. They have long sorted the aero vortexes. The consideration is spinning up that extra rotational weight. Personally i ride a 55 almost everywhere. 60 would be ok to. Once we get over that I would start questioning again.
Good investment for all around wheels? What depth would you recommend for triathlon, grand fondo and maybe off road riding. If you can pick just 1 wheel and tyre size what would you recommend? Fast but comfortable. Thanks
40 something, possibly 50 something if you can handle a little side wind
Hi! I have decided to upgrade the wheels of my bike, and the final "casting" has come down to a short list of candidates (basically: FFWD Ryot 44, a set of custom wheels with dt240 which are fairly lighter although also noticeably more expensive, and Caden wheels -deCadence version-). I would really appreciate your input about which ones would you choose and why.
Also, about my main concern regarding the FFWD wheel set, I would like to know whether it is as hard as I have read here and there to mount and remove the tyres off these rims (this feature is really important to me when choosing a set of wheels, I don't want to have to go to my local shop everytime I need to change tyres, and I don't want to have to wrestle a savage bear every time I do it at home either.
Thank you so much.
I don’t know much about Caden. Sorry. The FFWD are excellent. I can confirm the Pirelli TLR and Michelin Power Cub TL are an easy fit. The eagle F1 and Pro one need a little help with a tyre lever.
Thank you so much for your answer. I will let you know my final choice… once I’ve made it 😅
Thank you :)
I am considering buying Ryot 55. There are two variants available to me, one with DT350 hub for 1400 eur and one with DT240 EXP hub for 1800 eur. Which one would you recommend buying?
I doubt you would notice the difference. The 240s are very slightly lighter and have higher engagement points. The 350 can be upgraded if you feel this is important. It will be cheaper than 400 euro. Put that saving towards really good tyres.
Zipp 404 firecrest or ffwd Ryot 55's for fast summer bike riding? Would love to hear your thoughts as both are very well priced ATM.
Ryots. Purely for bass nipples and bearings. I don’t think you notice Zipp performance until the 858 anymore.
@@Mapdec thanks for your fast response..👍
What would you recommend as a tire for this rim?
Almost anything you want. It’s 21mm internal and hooked
I made the mistake of buying an inexpensive (ish) pair of wheels with 'own brand' hubs. I'm so impressed with them the rims are off to a good wheel builder to get built into new wheels with CX rays and Shimano hubs. Don't skimp on wheels!
Very wise. Video about 'facebook wheels' in the edit now.
I came across your channel recently while deciding which bike upgrade to choose. Went with Time Alpe d'Huez and wanted to purchase RYOT 44 but I see that their external rim width is 30mm, while the tire clearance on ADH is just 28mm. Any suggestions for something comparable? :)
Oh. They fit perfectly. I have one in the workshop now. Message us and I’ll show you a pic.
@@Mapdec Great! Messaged you a couple of minutes ago via the contact form on your webpage
What is your recommended wheels for gravel bike?
WTB i23 on the best hubs you can. Those things are flipping strong.
How do the Ryot wheels compare to the FFWD classic F4R / F6R series ?
I haven’t seen a set. We really don’t see many rim brake wheels anymore.
@@Mapdec Oh, I thought you would have since you think so highly of the brand. I had a set F6R with the aluminum brake track and could not fault them
@@aljaliah6868 good info. Thank you. I tend to think in terms of good products rather than good brands.
@@Mapdec Noted. Good CZcams channel by the way, no overdoing or overwording and just getting to the point. I came across yours through the LOOK 795 RS episode. 100% a great ride. Following you now , looking forward to more
@@aljaliah6868 thank you.
One year later, and - Boom! - the wheels with the DT Swiss hub are € 1,8K.
Oh wow.
Hi, I really dig your content. Just wondering, can I return you the favour by supporting your shop?
I have to mention that I am based in Malaysia 🇲🇾 though….
That’s really kind of you, thank you. Please feel free to share our channel with your friends, that would be a great help. There is also the Super Thanks button to make a small donation if this content has helped you out.
I think they make awesome wheels, but in my opinion they are a little bit to heavy. I would love a set around 1300gramm
What would you compromise to get that weight?
@@Mapdec I mean, when I compare it to other brands, the FFWD wheels are significantly heavier than the competition. My standard wheels also weigh around 1500 grams and if I upgrade them for €1500 I would also like them to be a bit lighter. I understand the Point with the nipples but that cant cause a difference of 100-200gramm
@@Maxibsa so what would you compromise? Remove carbon material and reduce rigidity? A lighter hub for the same cost would sacrifice durability. It’s a great question. If you only look at weight and price you only get a fraction of the big picture.
@@Mapdec To be honest, I don't know much about wheels, but I have to compare something. What's most important to me is how well they roll and how heavy they are
@@Maxibsa well. I promise you won’t notice 100g. You will notice rigidity, aerodynamics and over time you will appreciate the durability. If only because you spend more time riding than being anxious about things like corroding nipples and squeaky axles.
Who’s going on a bike trip in Toronto? Try not to get hit by a car.
Ok.
i thought hockey was expensive.... , 1500 GBP.... thats $2500 Canadian . In no world does it make sense to spend that much money on bike wheels for the average rider. I'm still new to cycling and this elitiest pricing for parts is really making me not enjoy the sport. I picked up an entry level bike and any 1 part i want to upgrade is going to cost more than the entire bike. There is zero logic in that. 5% Better wheel performance butat 8x the entire price of the bike? How? Why? Youl can't tell me there is 2500$ in carbon fibre, or labor in those wheels not a chance. I can see why more people dont take up cycling. "oh you only spent 500$ on your wheels, those are going to be patheticly terrible" this attitude / gate keeping really is shit.
It’s a good point. Did you see our £300 to £3000 wheels vid. There is good stuff in there for you.
You can get them much cheaper (~1000) on chain reaction. Never pay retail price.
Wiggle were recently selling Ryot44 with DT 240 hubs for £1350. I bought a set for the ADHX….
These wheels are too heavy
I’d take the 100g for the durability and stability any day.
Sorry, but just way too much money for a set of wheels. If you'd like to send me a set for free, I'd be glad to give you my opinion on them. Until then, I'll stick with my $350 set of SuperTeam carbon 38mm wheels that have been true and reliable for 5 years and nearly 30,000 miles.
Did you see recent vid on wheels from £300.
@@Mapdec I did not, let me have a look.
