  • Explorer Style Build: Episode 5
Another build inspired by the Classic Gibson Explorer guitar. In this episode I pick up after the crackle coat was applied. I apply clear coat, sand and polish the guitar to a beautiful look. Hardware goes on and it gets strung up.

The crackle finish was a learning process for me. I watched a lot of CZcams videos to get an idea of what to do. Then I did testing on scrap wood. I also painted the guitar once and didn't like it. I had to sand it down and do it again. The big thing is to be prepared when you get ready to paint. The setup time is super quick. I panted the under lying color (black) with regular paint and let it dry for about 45 min. Then I did the crackle paint (white) It basically starts drying as soon as I lay it down. So you have to quick with the process. You can't go back and do a second coat. So prepare and work fast! Good luck, let me know how it goes. Thanks for watching.

Well how does it sound and play now?

It still is really nice. The playability is great. The neck and fretwork came out awesome. The neck is maybe a little more chunky than I would like, but still nice. The sound is good, although it is maybe a little thin. I almost wish I would have put in the passive pickups first and then the active Guitar Fetish after. But it is not something that I can't tweak with a little EQ. They are whisper quiet. That's the great thing about active pickups. Thanks for watching!

Hi John, where did you get all the guitar hardware from? Or is it 1 size fits all with these sorts of things? Thankyou!

I got all the hardware from sellers on Amazon. I just verified the spacing on the bridge, and it was the same. The tuning machines were easy because the mounting hole for the tiny screw was not pre-drilled. I go the pickups from Guitar Fetish, and those came with the electronics. The only thing not from Amazon was the 9-volt battery compartment; I got that from Stewmac. All the Amazon stuff was pretty cheap. Thanks for watching!

Why do the build with the electronic so fast
So cant see we build all together
    I mean the cable
What for cable go from the humbucker to the battery?

Hi there. Thanks for watching. It was a little quick on some sections. I try to balance having the video be too long and showing more detail. I’m sorry about that. I’m always trying to make each video better. I’ll try to get more detail next time. Thanks!

It’s so stupid to sell completely painted; bridge, tailpiece, and posts.
RUF sells guitars, with hardware like this, out the door. Everyone thinks they suck. They don’t, they just aren’t properly grounded.
