      @@all41tja Most miniatures from the first releases of the world of tanks game came from the ones used in flamesofwar. This is a game similar to warhammer40k, as in command an army but in 1:100 or 15mm (heroic) and set in ww2 with different war periods and is from Battlefront Miniatures. Galeforce Nine is the one that brings out worldoftanks and falls under the battlefront miniatures umbrella.
      They (battlefront) also have another big (big as in a decent level of players) game set in a cold war/modern/current setting based around the team yankee books, which is a fictional setting where there was an actual war instead of the cold war, but all the equipment is stuff that was present or used today. Finally they also have some smaller games set in WW1 and the vietnam war, and a new stand alone game called clash of steel where you fight with tanks from different periods.
      The flamesofwar and team yankee game systems are quite fun and not too difficult to get into. In respect to warhammer it is also quite cheap to start playing, a 2 player starter is around 50-60 euros and an army box is around 90 euro and in most cases gives an army of 100 points, which is what most tournaments play.
      Sorry for the long story, but I really enjoy flamesofwar :).

    I get your thinking, and it is in an unusual place, but it is a great little beer & pretzels game for people who play historical games. It doesn't have the depth of a lot of other games, but you don't always want that. If you just want to push around some tanks and roll some dice, this is a great package for that experience.

  • @johnhollick3733
    @johnhollick3733 Před 5 měsíci +33

    I picked up WoT back in 2021 and painted up the German and US forces first. I’ve collected everything through Wave 12 and some doubles. I play historical forces with as many as 3 players a side. It’s quick fun and once folks get the hang of it, I let them have a go a creating their own lists. Who is it for? Light historical wargames, a gateway for young players and fit the ‘we don’t have all night’ crowd. Having played XWing, this is similar, if not more simplified.
    I would also recommend covering Gaslands. Rulebook and Matchbox cars are all you need to start. Special dice, acrylic templates and markers can come later. Most folks have fun customizing their cars with bitz box items and a simple paint job.

  • @Agent00abe

    This looks like an unwanted child between Bolt Action and X-Wing.
    Edit:
    Also I think it's worth mentioning that in World of Tanks the two teams fighting in any given battle is made up of any nationalities. The matchmaker balances teams around tank types (and more) but not nationality.
    I think that's why the miniature game isn't trying to be historical per se.

    • @philipgwyn8091

      Came here to say this. WoT is an arcade game not a simulation. It has nearly dozen a countries (UK, USA, Italy, German, Sweden, France, Poland, Czech, USSR, China and Japan) in the tech tree, but most of the tanks are paper tanks - only existed as blueprints if not pure fabrications. All battles have mix of all nations fighting on either team.

    • @Based_Lord_Humongous
      @Based_Lord_Humongous Před 5 měsíci +3

      I came here to say this as well, but also to add that this game has the problem that Tanks! and Tanks! The Modern Age has in that we are limited to what Battlefront will produce in plastic.
      For example, in Tanks! TMA, only the US had an AA Tank because the M113 could be built as the Standard Metal Box, M901 ITV (TOW ATGM), and M163 VADS. West Germans didn't get the Gepard, and Soviets didn't get the Gaskin/Gopher or even the Shilka. Only the French had Artillery, because the AMX-30 kit can build the AMX AuF1 as well. You had to resort to fand made cards.
      By the time plastic M109 and BDRM came out, the game was discontinued. So even though we are getting T-54, T29, IS-3 etc for World of Tanks (and Storm of Steel, and Late War Leviathans), the chances of ever seeing a French, Japanese, Chinese, Polish, Italian, etc. all those other tech trees is slim to none.

      I mean, both Axis and Allies would repaint and use captured tanks at times, because moving small-arms proof metal box (METUHL BAWKSES!) with bigger guns on top are super useful. So while you might not be able to find a report of an engagement with the precise mixture of tanks in the box, it is plausible.

    Funny how this is a re-skin of "Tanks!" which was a skirmish version of "Flames of War". The original starter box was 2 Panthers vs. 3 Shermans or something.They weren't assembled and had a lot of options for costumisation which allowed for different version. I liked that a lot. So, I guess they hoped the WoT license would make it sell better. It looks prettier but now it's even less complex and more expensive.

    My gaming club uses it at our conventions to bring children from 8 up to early teens into gaming. We have a few folks almost always running a couple of games in two different 4 hour blocks during the convention. That is what it really who this game is for is to introduce folks to some simple and easy rules, as well as concepts typical to wargaming. We have priced it out as well, to get in after the starter set, isn't that hard to pick up a few more tanks for less than US$20 or save up and get a platoon blister pack. That the models are already together and painted means that a 10yr old (or a 40 yr old who has young kids in the house) who is wanting to dabble in the hobby can easily get into it without the investment of painting and assembling minis.

    9:45: Bruh... Russians began WWII on the same side as Germany, with the two invading Poland in concert (see Ribbentropp-Molotov Pact). They had a falling out after Stalin wanted too many concessions in return for formally joining the Axis, and that led to the Reich attacking USSR in 1941 in Operation Barbarossa in 1941.
    The anachronism is moreso in the German / Russian team fighting the British / American team than with the presence of Russians on the same side as Germans.

    Jenny Nicholson did a (very confused) review of the Forces of Destiny dolls. They were Star Wars Barbie dolls. Why? She had a brillian insight - the dolls were for Star Wars Uncles to buy their niece who already liked dolls and could now play Star Wars with her dolls as well. So. So ... is this for WarHammer Uncle or World of Tanks Uncle?

    While I agree the box alliances are a little strange, the Soviet Union officially maintained neutrality during WW2 but cooperated with and assisted Germany. After Nazi Germany attacked the USSR on June 22, 1941, the country changed alliances. But in short, early WW2 Soviet forces invaded countries in conjunction with Germany, even if they didn't fight alongside of them!

    We have that Warhammer board game here, never played. As a family we all enjoyed Heroquest so one year I got the Warhammer one for my husband for a Father’s Day present. The assembly and painting was just too much of a barrier for him.
    Now that I paint, the minis are now assembled, primed and grey & white airbrushed. One day I may even get some colour on them. They’re just so annoyingly fragile!

    How the frick can you not recognize the Panzer IV ausf. H? Not only is it a masterpiece of german engineering and the workhorse of the german military during WW2 but it is also the tank of choice for the protagonists of Girls und Panzer, the popular anime about Japanese Highschool Girls doing recreational Tank battles with real tanks!

      I would beg to differ on your first point, but Germans had 1, and still have an overwhelming problem with over engineering, which made the tank more of a liability in action. Then it should have been.

    Russia and Germany were allies during the early years of WWII. The Germany was concerned about getting stabbed in the back and decided to pre-emptively attack Russia. Which was a huge mistake because that's probably one of the deciding factors as to why Germany lost. Having to split their forces between two fronts against Russia in the East and the allied forces in the West.

    I haven't watched the video in its entirety but a thought did come to mind when you said the called the terrain something like "augmentation" / 2d flat terrain - combined with the fact that the game is based on a video game/mobile game: They could have potentially gone for some kind of weird mobile mixture with an app that actually if you point the phone camera at the battlefield, using optical recognition software it recognises the flat terrain (and maybe the tanks as well and damage tokens) and renders a perspective correct 3d visual of what the tabletop displays (with animations)...which tech-able players could if they want screen-cast to their large screen tv.

  • @walksinthedarkness
    @walksinthedarkness Před 5 měsíci +5

    I've always found the idea of bringing video gamers into the realm of table top games to be a difficult ones. There isn't a lot of crossover especially when the games play very differently. Also, in the case of World of Tanks if you've already shelled out (pun intended) your hard earned on electronic upgrades why would you spend more money on a different system?

    WoT is based around Clans or Teams, Tanks are balanced by type, Light, Medium, Heavy and TDs, not by nationality or era, so its quite normal to see a Maus, T95, Chieftain and a Foch on the same team, we use clan stickers on the model tanks, to know who is in which team.

IMO, it's pretty cool and I tackled it like a Girls Und Panzer-esque board game as, for those that haven't seen the show, it involves teams of tanks battling over smaller objectives and such that fit in the scale of this game. Pretty quick and simple tank-focused gameplay

    I teach in a high school. At lunch, I seem to collect the boys who love to play World of Tanks on their phones (we don't have much of a lunch room area...). I think this game might be for me to try to introduce them to tabletop gaming, maybe? I have another staff member who would LOVE to play this with me at lunch though. Light rules, only a few things to paint up, and they's paint up quick with a base coat, wash, and drybrush. Easy to get new people into it.
