You always get a beautiful luminosity in your colours Michael. It seems to stem from your initial canvas staining and very scratchy brushwork keeping everything alive. Your drawing is also so incredibly loose as well as the painting. When you start to block in it never looks like it is going to finish up so wonderful. Most of your work has a look like it is only 95% finished if you know what I mean but that's what makes it look so interesting I feel. I think I'm learning a lot from watching your videos. Thank you.
A return to the lighthouse in Malibu Both guys looking about twenty-two Michael focused on details and geometry Ariah’s a homage to beach and cliffs grandiosity Luminous, translucent but the wind is an ogre Cerulean sky fades to horizon of yellow ochre 🌊 😁 I feel terrible about the camera. Your painting is beautiful. I like the details you included of the lighthouse this time. I hope Ariah finished his painting. Thanks for sharing! Peace and love..Suz What ☮️💛
Thanks Suz! I'm surprised I haven't lost a camera before. I suppose it was bound to happen eventually! I've been feeling extra scruffy lately so I really appreciated the line in your poem about looking twenty-two 😂🙏
So interesting to hear how you get your colors. The whitewater has purple in it! Brilliant. Makes it come alive. Burned sienna to tame the blue. Going from ultramarine to Phtalo blue…. Thanks for the tips! So helpful! Love the results. Sorry about the camera. It was kind of funny how it ended and I like that you left that bit in.
Great painting. Love the energy. I like how you handled the color in the sky, it’s a little detail, but it really captures what is happening. Sorry about your camera.
Thanks Andrew! Clear skies can be a challenge. My hope is to capture a feeling of airiness and space while still having some visible brushwork. Glad you like!
Carrying that straight edge with you is such a great idea! I don't presently have one in my paint box, but I will add one. There's a painting of a seascape by Childe Hassam, at the Smith College Museum of Art, that drives me crazy, because he painted a sloping horizon line. It's just slightly off... but it's OFF! Every time I go there and see it, I mentally adjust it.
The straight edge I used is the leg extension for my easel. I know what you mean regarding the horizon. It's got to be perfectly straight and horizontal! 😂👍
Sorry to hear about your camera Michael. It's hard to see such a beautiful day and be told that it's cold and windy. But, cold is cold and wind is wind and both can be frustrating to create in. A beautiful piece came from the effort. I love the light at the horizon. I have always loved the way a sky will fade to a creamy yellow. It seems counterintuitive to paint it that way but it is very real, and beautiful. Especially in a painting.
Thanks Matthew. It was warm and beautiful when we started! It was still a great day, despite losing the camera. Painting the yellow at the horizon can be tricky since it can mix with the blue if you're not careful. Yellow ochre seems to work better than cads which can create unwanted greens.
I do look forward to your videos every week and I enjoyed watching this one - except perhaps when the camera went splat. Oh nooooo!!!!!! As always, a beautiful painting! I especially love the cool teals and blues and purples in the tower and the warm browns in the rocks below. Glad you guys didn’t blow away out there in the windy surf. Stay safe!
Beautiful paintings Ariah and Michael. Love the yellow in the sky, Michael, and the translucent rocks, along with the violet note in the foam. So sorry about the new camera.
I was very intrigued about the vanishing point and getting the angles right on the building. I would love if you could show a little more on this technique. I am sorry that your camera fell and broke. I gasped when it happened 😮🥺. Your painting came out beautiful “as usual “ great job!
As a subject Malibu gives and gives and she is always showing you a new look. I love the lifeguard tower, and your use of dox purple. I have been using it more myself. I love how it is cool yet has warmth depending on what one wants or needs from it. Really nice picture. Too bad about the camera. Hope it had a good warrantee. Your subs appreciate the videos and your hard work
A nice glow in your painting that really captures that feeling of the light of the scene. Sucks about your camera! You seem to have a good attitude about it. Plein air is so challenging.
RIP camera, even though a life was short doesn't mean it wasn't well lived 🤣 I really dig how thin you left the paint on the hill, it's a nice contrast against the strokes of highlights and green you put in
Hi Micheal…the close up paint colors of the building were just beautiful. I know others commented that they like the rocky cliff under it and to my taste it seems a bit too transparent. I could see the cliff being more solid to support the weight of the building. Anyway, just a thought. Cheers -Greg
Thanks Greg! The transparency is only really noticeable when viewed up close. From a distance it looks solid. The transparency creates luminosity in the darks, which is what I'm after. Thanks for your thoughts 😊
So sorry to hear about your camera. It must have been really annoying especially as it was new. However I love the painting. It’s amazing how realistic the cliffs are yet when you’re up close the paint work is quite thin. Obviously your brush strokes are very good too so that encourages me to work harder on that. Thank you for posting.
Thanks, it was a bummer to lose the camera but it helped that I was excited about the way the painting was developing. As for the brushstrokes, it really helps to walk back after scrubbing in a section. Your painting will look very different from 10 feet away. The thin sections add luminosity when viewed from a distance!
@@chamberlainpaintings That's good to hear! I can't even imagine, if I would lose or destroy my own laptop. That would kill me. lol ... Not only because of cost, but mainly because of all my favorite data stored there, which not all of them are duplicated on another memory discs/cards... Have a nice day!
Love it, that's a pretty nice spot to paint. Sorry about your camera. Things here are a mess, mother in law with heavy Covid, almost crosses over to the other side because she wasn't vaccinated, I've been running like Forest since 10 days ago. My parents and my sister in their summer vacation all with Covid, all vaccinated and boosted thank god. It's a mess I need a vaction myself, but there's no escape from this ffs.
Wow, so sorry to hear. Hang in there Martin. Many in my family have had it as well. Thankfully everyone is ok. When does it warm up in the south of France?
All we get are windy days! 😂 I'll get another camera and keep going. It's the unpredictable gusts that cause the damage. One of the challenges of making videos!
Sorry for the camera loss. Like the energy in this piece. I’ve been awol. Moving about 5 hours south . Need to catch up with you. ! 🌴. Tampa , Florida 🌴
Beautiful sky…shame about the camera…I’ve got a Canon AE1 film camera from 1982 that has fallen down granite mountains, been dropped more times than you’d believe and it still works…guess technology is a trade off.
I use canon g7x cameras and they're pretty delicate. Great image quality and they're small. Perfect for making videos. This is the first one I've lost in 5 years. Not bad!
Hi! :) I’m 22 and I myself love painting. My entire life all I’ve ever heard is how I should pursue art as a career, however, I’m not currently. I’m really passionate about painting, but I feel like the art industry is a bit ruthless, and sometimes it feels hopeless to get into. Do you have any advice for me being a young person not exactly sure where to take their art?
I thought of including the flags but they were outside the picture frame. I could have lowered them but I felt they would draw too much attention at the top edge of the painting.
I really appreciate the end of your videos when you show your painting in the studio and do like a self critique.

I originally thought the camera falling was just a fancy transition and was commending you on your creativity. 😂
It did make for a good transition 😂

Realy enjoyed this one Mike, two different but great prespectives, the sky and water tones were very good. Shame about the camera, hope it lives mate.

Bummer about your g7x. :( feel for you... love the cliff, rocks and water, colors are gorgeous!

Sooo sorry to see your camera go down. This is an example of why artists can’t just give their work away. Supplies and stuff are expensive.
So true!
i love these videos id love to see and equipment tour
Ok I'll keep that in mind for the future 😊
Beautiful spot, and beautiful works, i specially like the three tone sky. Sorry for the camera!!!!
Thanks Juan Carlos!
Sorry about your camera! I was really digging the close-ups at the beginning too.

Very nice, I really like this one.

Thanks Henrique! I don't have step by step tutorials but I'm working on a series of videos for Patreon that cover my whole process.
I never understood how to decide where exactly to put a vanishing point... How do you do it?
I'll try to explain in a future video 😊👍
Great job, sir. 👍

This particular painting has a "Hopper" look to it...guess you won't be filming on windy days anymore...
