    Great contribution to the G9 knowledge base. After 3 years I had mostly evolved to much of what you have but did a number of refinements based on your video.. Your back button/AFC setting is a brilliant simplification. I have lost so many shots by wandering back and forth between AFC/AFS somehow thinking that AFS was a more reliable focus process for fixed subjects.
    A perhaps simpler alternative to the near/far buttons is to set a button to single shot single point (I use the left toggle.) That cleans up the focus quickly when grabbing a subject hiding in the foliage.but quickly returns to my single area focus mode.

    Thanks as always, Andrew, for your continuing support to those of us with the G9. I'm going to run through your video again, with my camera in menu, to check my settings. Also those photos near the end with settings, and especially your tips, are much appreciated. Question; any thoughts on setting the ISO to auto, so only aperture and shutter speed have to be considered? Thanks again,
    Mike in Oz

    • @naturesimagephotography
      @naturesimagephotography  Před 2 lety

      Many people prefer to do that Mike but I don't. With all things in manual, I can quickly control exposure by turning the shutter speed dial up or down a little. With ISO to auto the exposure level stays locked, which means to adjust it you have to go to exposure compensation, which I avoid. Yet some people use exposure compensation as freely as I use my shutter speed dial, so each to their own I guess.

    Another well done video! I've had my G9 for about 2 years, and pretty much use the same settings as you do. It really is a tool that allows a tremendous amount of flexibility. You can set it up for a specific style of photography, or easily change back and forth to multiple different settings. I still have to mess with it to remember all the settings that are available.
    I do have one more lens to add to your collection - the Panasonic Leica 8-18. you won't regret this one! but might look in you!r bag and start screaming " which one??? Which one????. thanks for the vid!

    Once again Andrew you have created a most helpful video illustrating the the power and flexibility of the G9 with a most practical instruction as to what choices one can make to make the G9 better to operate and allow us to focus on the subject matter and not the technological choices. I would be interested in your observations as to the increased capabilities of the the new iPhones. I have been a Panasonic 4/3 camera user since the GH1 but in recent years find that my "new camera" upgrades have been to last iPhone Pro Max cameras. I still use my G9 and particularly the 100-400mm lens and specially pleased with the latest 2.4 firmware update. But I do shoot a good portion of my daily photos with the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Also this summer we went to a Dark Zone in Ontario to try and capture the Perseids Meteor Shower and did get a few good shots with 30 sec photos with both the iPhone and G9. Have you done any astrophotography that you might share. Keep up the great work!!

    Thanks for taking the time to share what you've learned. Interesting that you recently changed your attitude on BBF. I'm still getting used to that myself, as I still prefer manual everything most of the time. That said, I do like that near/far feature. Re ISO on the back dial--I initially used that but agree that it's hard not to accidentally move it (almost as easy as accidentally tripping the shutter, especially with the battery grip) and there is that dedicated button... Have you tried 1-Area with Human/Animal Detect? Also, too bad there's no "salt mist" mode--we so rarely even get fog here...

    Really helpful for me to see this kind of deep dive detail on the G9 ! I'm a retired motorcycle service business owner so I've been motivated to approach / learn the workings of my G9 from the ' mechanical ' perspective. After watching your well crafted presentation, I now am using The ' AFC ' setting most of the time - it's combining single shot & continuous focusing together in one setting. I've had the near & far shift focus assigned to the front Fn buttons for quite a while & there very helpful. Also use BBF. I don't often shoot in RAW. There are lot of features on the G9 that only work in jpeg. I do my editing in L.R. & sometimes will use Topaz De Noise or Sharpen. Have you ever tried shooting birds flying with the stabilizer turned off ? I've taken the ' soft ' portion of a velcro pad - trimmed it with scissors & put it on the camera where my thumb rests. I finds this adds comfort. I've also added the oem Panasonic's larger eye cup which gets my nose farther away from the monitor's glass. Goda go - the dogs want their walk ! Thanks again the work you put into this. Ray in Sacramento.

    • @naturesimagephotography
      @naturesimagephotography  Před 2 lety

      Hi Ray, thanks for the detailed comment. It is a terrific camera for allowing us all to use it any way we like. Apart from an occasional bit of video I really only use RAW. I edit using Adobe Camera RAW to process my images, and while I kind of enjoy editing I don't feel the need to change to a new software, happy with my routine as it is. And no, I don't think I have tried birds with noise reduction off unless by accident...with the 100-400mm lens at full extension I would probably get motion sickness. Cheers - hope the dogs enjoyed their walk.

    Thanks for a very clear presentation that is easy to follow along with. I found that many of your suggested settings are ones I already use on my G9. There were a number of settings that I added following your step-by-step directions. I notices that you did not offer custom settings for the control dial buttons. My G9 setup has the Control Dial set up as follows:
    TOP/UP set to Image Size to easily change magnification (1. press button 3 seconds for menu to setup, 2. Scroll to Picture Size on page 5/19, 3. Press Menu to select)
    RIGHT set to Video Record. I set mine to FHD at 60 frames per second. I like having record button separate from the shutter release on the top because my fingers have trouble hitting the standard record button on the top. I use the Ex Tele function to give FHD video a tremendous boost in reach.
    LEFT side set to 1 Shot “6k/4k Photo. This allows me to quickly switch from photo to 6/4k for one shot. I set my choice of 6/4k mode in the Q menu. (1. press button 3 seconds for menu to setup, 2. Scroll to One Shot “6K/4K Photo” on page 4/19, 3. Press Menu to select)
    BOTTOM/DOWN set to Exe Tele Conv that I keep Photo with TeleCov on, Video Off (1. press button 3 seconds for menu to setup, 2. Scroll to Ex. Tele. Conv. on page 8/19, 3. Press Menu to select)
    CONTROL DIAL is set to ISO. I usually leave it on Auto ISO, but like the control on the dial for astro.
    Now that the functions on the dial have been set, it’s easy to switch modes for shooting on the fly.

    An FYI on custom function setting for any button that is capable. If you don’t want to find the custom function designation screen in the menu you can simply press and hold any customizable button and in a moment of holding that button the menu with available options for that button will appear.

    • @naturesimagephotography
      @naturesimagephotography  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you. I did know that, and was almost going to include that in the video. But I have found that with some functions assigned to a button, all that happens when you press that button - for whatever length of time - is to fire up that function. For example having assigned Near Shift and Far Shift to those two buttons on the front, if I hold either of those buttons down all I get is continuous near shift or far shift focus. So rather than confuse the issue by telling people something that is only true MOST of the time...I decided to leave it out.

      1. I don't think it should matter, but try doing it with MF set on both the body and the lens.
      2. Make sure you have followed the video instructions correctly. When you get to the MF Assist heading in the menu there are four options...the one I am using the second one down on the list.

    Thanks Andrew for your videos and the work of making them. I have been following them for a long time with great interest. I want to ask you a question: when I crop my photos (for example at 100% LR) the sharpness observed is disappointing. It is normal? Do you implement sharpening functions in your post-processing? I envy the spectacular sharpness of your photographs.
    Thank you.

    • @naturesimagephotography
      @naturesimagephotography  Před 2 lety +1

      I don't think that is so unusual. I haven't seen your photos, let alone seen them at 100%. But photos that can look a little 'unsharp' at 100 % can still look fine in normal view. Remember you are the only person who will ever see them enlarged so much. I appreciate your praise for my photos, but some are sharper than others and some would probably look soft to you, if you saw them at 100%. But you will never see that, you will only see them on CZcams after they have been processed and resized. In photography, the saying "You are your own worst critic" is absolutely true.
      And yes...in processing my RAW files I always apply a little bit of sharpening. However if a photo is truly soft, then sharpening will never really fix it. In fact a lot of people over-sharpen their photos, and you can see weird outlines around the edges of objects.

    • @naturesimagephotography
      @naturesimagephotography  Před 2 lety

      I think you might have your camera set to silent shooting William. That prevents your shutter speed going slower than a second. It happens if you accidentally turn the switch on the front of the camera body from position 1 to position 2. I gave that a quick mention in my previous video: czcams.com/video/haHGthCMc6Y/video.html

    I have been using auto focus for years and am doing on the G9.
    However, I want to increase my shutter speed to something like 1000th of a second like other people to film moving birds.
    Presumably I cannot do this using auto focus? I don't understand all these settings. Also, does one lose quality of image?
    I went to the camera shop to ask if they do a booster for the 100-400mm lens. They do but it is still out-of-stock. However, the guy recommended not to bother anyway because it affects auto focus.

    • @naturesimagephotography
      @naturesimagephotography  Před 2 lety

      Auto focus has no impact on shutter speed Gareth. And no you won't lose any quality of image, in fact your photos will likely be sharper at 1000th/sec as long as the exposure is good. You can usually only shoot at 1000 if there is plenty of daylight. Shooting in manual mode I can select any shutter speed I want, but if I select 1000 I also have to make sure the aperture and ISO are suitable to give me a correct exposure.
      Take a look at my 'Photography School' series. It explains things like shutter speed, exposure and the exposure triangle which might clear up some of your confusion over settings.

      The manual that comes with any camera is only designed to show you how to operate the functions...not to explain what the functions are for. So I think a back-to-basics course would be good for you. My 'Photography School' videos is about photography...not about the G9 specifically.
