@@ghoultooth - Yea not too dissimilar here lol, and (for Australia) like... people who love to try and be as typically Australian as possible, with this sense of patriotic pride they have, or at least they have a lot of attachment to this type of Australian character they envision in their heads... I think.
Reminds me of when the topic of Australia comes up on social media for one reason or another, and then you get all these Australians busting out the most stereotypical Australian vocabulary they can possibly muster, and all the rest of it.
They certainly do say "mate" in the UK too, though I don't think the word has as quite as much of a cultural identity thing going on there.

I love how that's a perfect example for the evolution of language. Some group of people creates a word, or gives an existing one a new meaning, others hear it and start using it ironically. But then they get kinda used to it, and start to use it unironically, too, until it becomes a part of your regular vocabulary.
And if the overall connotation of the word isn't too negative, plus if it fulfils a niche that makes it worth using, the word sticks around for years or even longer.
It fits right into Michael Reeves lore that it started as a meme. I wouldn't have expected anything less.
