  • I don't speak Kinyarwanda and it's time for that to change! So I called in friend and fluent Kinyarwanda speaker, Alice, to give me a lesson... and to test her skills! :)

      +Aurore Kab Good explanation! Or one could say
      Mu (you) ra (are) ha (that place) haraye (into for a short time)
      Ba (they) ra (are) ha (that place) haraye (into for a short time)
      Ba (they) ra (do) m (me) haraye (favor for a short time)
      (They do favor me for a short time)
      BTW Baramparaye was the last Queen of Burundi.

      ndakwingize is more like "I beg" than "please". I mean if you only phrase Please it would work, but if you want to put it in an actual sentence, it would be different

    This made me realize, once again, how difficult and complex languages are! I'm Rwandan, born and raised in Kigali. I admit it is really hard to get 10/10 because the vocabulary in different languages does not develop in the same way. Please can be translated as 'nyabuna, nyabuneka or ndakwinginze' but this literally mean 'I beg you'. There is no Kinyarwanda word for the polite English use of please.If you say 'hasi' in KInyarwanda, you could well mean 'down' (as in fall down) or on the floor. There is no colloquial word for floor. Say brown. Words like inzobe, igitaka, kaki and ibihogo could all be used. Inzobe means a light skinned person. Igitaka (soil) can also mean the colour of soil. Kaki is borrowed from French and it is all right to use it for the kaki shade. Ibihogo, originally referred to one of the skin colors for cows. I'm interested in this because I don't live in Rwanda now, have a 3 yr old girl whose mom does not speak kinyarwanda. Big up Mak!

  • @Vinxi
    @Vinxi Před 5 lety

    inzobe means light skin and please doesn't exist in Kinyarwanda due to the culture of begging being frowned upon, people were encouraged to be respectful but also confident. Translations for words like 'may I' and 'can I' were used exclusively when begging until colonialist incited some change
    Another example points to the original Kinyarwanda word for sorry which is 'Ihangane'.
    This translates better to 'hang in there and stay strong' rather than a deep sympathetic tone which was later adopted from Kiswahili with 'Pole'
