  • I don't speak Kinyarwanda and it's time for that to change! So I called in friend, superstar singer and fluent Kinyarwanda speaker, TETA DIANA, to give me a lesson... and to test her skills! :)

    Before colonial times Rwandans made metallic objects of course but they did not use metal to make bowls. For that they used either wood, clay, gourd or tightly and finely woven straw. The words for “bowl” depended on which material it was made of.
    With colonial times metallic bowls were introduced, made from tin or other alloys, and later on aluminum. For these, people borrowed the word bakuli from Kiswahili. For certain types of vessels the French words casserole and gamelle are also used.

    Teta is so cultured. I have lived abroad since I was a child, so I don't come across people like that, who I can learn from. Props to you, Makeda, for taking active role in your learning

    Hi Mekeda, after listening to the different translations, I realise how similar the language is yo Swahili. Rwandese will have no problem learning swahili. It is like French learning Spanish or italian...... kinya Rwanda is also a beautiful language

    haaah, i like the word Ibakure = Bowl. i come from Eastern province, Nyagatare. we call it Ibakure or Isorori (not plastic tho), or Ingemeri (plastic). KOGA= to swim or to wash one's face or hands. KWIYUHAGIRA= to shower. Murakoze for another video, am a great fun of both of y'all. (wish you a nice wedding, Makeda = Ndakwifuriza ubukwe (buhire = bwiza).

    Traveling is ubukerarugendo; urugendo, the journey gains a prefix "ubukera" (being actively involved into as in you wake up to do something ...) ; gutembera comes from Swahili "tembeya".

      @Roglat Před 4 lety +1

      Hi, @inimimouche! in Kinyarwanda, "isaro" means "bead". "A bowl" is called "agasorori" but more correctly and traditionaly, it is called "imbehe".
