I just wanted to say that I've seen several people asking for subtitles. I looked into it and it seems like youtube has removed the community captions feature, which means that if we want captions I'm gonna have to do it myself. But fret not, I have way too much time on my hands, and this musical means so much to me, so I have decided to sit down and write them out myself!! So soon enough there will be english subtitles for the whole thing, it might take me a while, but I hope those of y'all that wanted it are at least excited to know they're coming eventually :D
It KILLS ME. Because the cube at the end being all put together represents the family finally coming together again.... and the plain grey block taken out symbolizes that their lives will NEVER be the same, and that when whizzer died, he took apart of them with him :(
NO. GOD. NO. NO I THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE A SILLY, GOOFY MUSICAL MADE OF GREY BLOCKS. I THOUGHT YOU GUYS WERE JOKING. DENIAL IS A RIVER IN EGYPT MADE OF MY OWN TEARS.
@@SSsilverfox and to show me more musicals in general cus I have a lack of musical knowledge outside epic, sound of music, Mary Poppins, Matilda and wicked, and I’ve only heard bits and pieces from six, hairspray, heathers, and others. I just watched rtc earlier cus it’s the other obsession of hers
Whizzer being asleep with his face nuzzled in Marvin’s neck while he sings about his feelings is so personal to me There’s so much soft chemistry it’s crazy
In the london production Marvin sings it while Whizzer is sitting in a soft jumper reading in an armchair and falls asleep so Marvin tries to take his reading glasses off him and when it wakes him back up he sends him up to bed and it is SO unbelievably soft and domestic
i agree but I think the silence right when whizzer says that he does not love Marvin is just as impactful , because you see how now the man marvin ruined his life for doesn’t even love him and he now doesn’t even have anyone , both silences make me cry regardless
@@thisonetl9167 I think it's just practical to have him do it as the audience probably doesn't look at him and he can clearly see Marvin to get the timing right
i saw an interpretation one time saying that the dog might also be referring to marvin, theyre relieved to have a life without him and kind of hope he wont come back into it
The block being taken off of the set at the end to represent a grave for whizzer also represents a hole being taken out of everyone’s life with whizzers death to me. The grey blocks represent bond and everyone’s life’s with its familiarity. Whizzer leaving everyone creates a new world all the cast is unfamiliar with.
a moment of appreciation for the costumes. at least in the first act, Trina is orange/yellow, Whizzer is blue, and Marvin flips between them. He starts the show with his blue shirt (his love of men) as the base layer of his outfit with an orange tie, his connection to Trina. Later Whizzer removes Marvins tie, removing his connection to Trina. Marvin adds a green coat, the color between Trina's yellow and Whizzers blue, which also emphasizes his lack of fashion sense. Mendel wears brown, a less bold color but still warm, to match Trina. Jason wears a green shirt with yellow and orange planets, showing that he is Marvin and Trinas child. Whizzers act one jacket is a deep blue, which mattches his button down and pushes him further away from Marvin color wise. Their button downs were nearly the same color, but the jackets differentiates their color pallets. They are growing apart. After march of the falsettos, Trina is waring an almost white skirt and button down. She is refreshed and new, with her new husband and new mission to live life happily. She is more neutral to fit Mendel better. When Marvin hits Trina he is wearing red, her old colors. He is coming back to her, but she has moved on. In act 2, these rules are broken over and over. They change clothes more because they are changing as people more. They aren't as stuck in their ways as they were in act 1. It's the 80s, even Mendel isn't afraid of a little color in his wardrobe. The bright colors and lack of organization makes them look more like real people. When Whizzer gets sick, the color is stripped away.
i genuinely dont think ive ever seen a duo with such perfect chemistry as Christian and Andrew. theyre both incredible actors and work so well on stage together. i will never get over this show
25:04 my fav detail so far is andrew nodding along to the beat to help the young actor who plays jason stay with the challenging rhythm in this speaking/singing mix moment.
Ngl all the mid roll ad placements have me so weak 😭 it’ll really be “Character has traumatic moment” then immediately after or interrupting it’s an ad 😂
one difference i’ve noticed between act one and act two is that act one feels more like a performance while act two feels more like a group of people living. in act one, there’s almost no costume changes, and for the most part, that’s all they are: costumes. while in act two, they change outfits regularly as people do as days pass. another thing is the songs. in act one, almost every song has an “audience” of the other cast members even when they’re not in the song, as if they’re performing for the audience of characters. while in act two, the only characters on stage are the characters in that scene or song. it feels more authentic that way.
especially because act two is accepting that they don’t have to be the perfect family, and in creating their true “tight knit family” they stop performing for everyone in their lives. i love the small details in this musical so much
Things I noticed on my 3rd watch: -Trina's first costume in act 1 is all warm colors compared to the men's cool colors -Whizzer makes the slapping sound with a clap in Marvin Hits Trina -Whizzer saying "do i love him? no" in Marvin Hits Trina is a callback to This Has Better Come To A Stop when Marvin says "love me please" -Jackass in replacement of asshole the whole musical -The amount of product in Whizzer's hair in act 2 -The Baseball Game perpetuates the stereotype that lesbians like sports bc they're more masculine. Then breaks down the same stereotype when Whizzer, the fashion all knowing gay guy, teaches Jason to play baseball (I think is this a really cool way to write lgbt ppl) -Trina lip syncing Jason's prayer during the bar mitzvah
@@leahnorberg2189 Well I'm guessing the "bed" is supposed to represent Marvin's love, first time at the end of act 1 and second time when he, y'know *dies*
I noticed something! Wowie! In the first act, every change in clothes is either taking coats on and off or literal costumes (like the opening number or march of the falsettos outfit) although this starts to change on the last songs of the first act. In the second act however, they actually change clothes, like, everyday outfits. No play pretend, they are actually navigating life and actually and regularly changing clothes. I just think that's neat❤
adding onto this, mendels outfit changes from act 1 to act two represent the change of time, then the only times after that his outfit changes are when he's exercising with trina and at the end of the musical near to whizzers death, maybe showing he's still holding to a bit of childish naivety until he finally is affected by the reality of whizzers death.
They also do it with the set. For the most part its the blocks and then they start bringing in little things like pillows and when the whizzer stuff starts the main piece is a realistic hospital bed(and other real furniture around it) to show that its not "make believe" anymore Edit: Also, on the costume point, at the end of act 2, we see jason wearing exactly what his father did at the end of act 1(red zip-up), each at the point in the show where they're at their lowest
48:50 All of the adults are doing the voice, but Jason doesn’t, because he’s being the most mature in their situation 😭😭😭(either that or the voice is supposed to be mimicking a preteen boy, so Jason doesn’t do it bc he IS a preteen boy.) I love how skilled all of the actors are. Their reactions are always obvious without pulling focus.
No matter how many times I watch/listen to this, I can't stop absolutely bawling nonstop for the last 20 minutes. Just ugly crying all the way. God I love this cast so much
listen, i love Marvin as much as the next person and i admire his character growth but something that will always kill me is when at minute 26:33 he asks "life can be wonderful, isn't this wonderful?" and Whizzer is so eager to reassure him but Marvin cuts him off, still insecure and still looking for a fight over silly things. It's one of the small moments, not like The thrill of first love where we can see that both of them enjoy bickering, in which we see that Whizzer is actually more mature and invested in their relationship, not wanting it to end, because he feels like his life with Marvin is wonderful.
The true ending is that Whizzer lives and then gets healthy after recovering and that he does NOT DIE and gets married to Marvin to complete there life as fathers to Jason and sees Jason growing up and Trina and Mendel live together happily and also the lesbians from next door live together forever and that’s how it actually is
@@alexf225 It was the first musical I ever saw that made me cry (like sob uncontrollably) and I became like so attached to the cast and storyline I guess when I say it changed my life I'm sort of joking? But also this musical just holds a special place in my heart because i love it so much, so that's why
@@alexf225obv the person already answered but I think for me I’m so attached to this musical bc I saw it at a pretty import time developmentally (around 16/17) and it shifted my perspective into something much more empathetic and understanding of familial love I grew up an only child pretty detached from any kind of immediate family, so I spent a lot of time alone or with the one other family member I had. and bc of that, most media about family dynamics and how important family is didn’t resonate with me whatsoever. I think the unorthodox and dysfunctional family (while also acknowledging the importance of choosing your family and how life is short) in falsettos made me view my own life differently. their family was flawed and messy, but when it truly mattered, they all came together. at jasons baseball game, when whizzer got sick, for jasons bar mitzvah. it kinda gave me hope that I might get to experience that one day. fyi im off an edible rn, so sorry for rambling 😭
“I always wanted to watch falsettos, ive heard amazing things about it! Something to add to my go to musicals list” is how this started, it quickly turned into “WHY DID HE HAVE TO DIE NOOOOO” too quickly
@@idontknowwhatimdoing3685 i think falsettos is sadder because it’s more true to real life 😭💔 what happened to so many- too many people during the aids crisis is absolutely terrible.
Just wanna appreciate this little moment at 1:53:51, with Marvin being clearly ticked off by Cordelia's wrong pronunciation of "gefilte" but biting his tongue until Mendel says something, not to seem like the only asshole caring about linguistic minutiae at times like these. So incredibly relatable.
I will never be able to get over the phenomenal onstage chemistry between Christian and Andrew. The way they interact with each other on stage is amazing. Also the way they sing into each others mics at 14:37 is wonderful lmao
“if you had not been my friend” hurts so much fucking more than like using “lover” or “partner” or some shit because it’s like, a friend is in it for life. a friend is there when no one else is. a friend is always closest, a friend has known you the longest. idk my parents call eachother their “best friends” and for some reason it just hits harder.
"oh its a nice thursday evening, i wanna watch something, ive heard good things about falsettos, ill try watching it" i havent cried this hard in a while.
Three sad things I noticed after rewatching it 1. Whizzer repeats sometimes over and over again on his death bed because despite what the song says, he is not ready to accept dying and leaving his one stable relationship 2. During the last song, whizzer and Marvin slowly move closer throughout the song as they wish for one more hour, showing how they wish they could repeat what they had and be able to embrace again. 3. When Marvin said that men get better with age and that they were just going to skip that stage, emphasizing we’re, which shows that Marvin continued to follow whizzer and pass away from the sickness. Marvin may have not made it to Jason’s 14th birthday due to the sickness. Act 2 left me litteraly sobbing the entire time.
1:48:05 OH. MY. GOD. I've seen this so many times... Listen to Whizzer here, after Marvin says "yes it is" if you turn up the volume, you can hear Whizzer quietly say "no, no it isn't" And my heart SHATTERED
1:42:44 And then the musical ended there. Jason had his bar mitzvah and it went wonderfully, Trina moved on from Marvin and prioritized her own happiness with Mendel, Whizzer and Marvin stayed together and worked everything out- Marvin stops trying to force his familial expectations on everyone, and he officially and peacefully divorces Trina and sees Jason on the weekends. Cordelia catered the bar mitzvah. Charlotte learns an at-the-time unknown disease has broken out among queer men and warn Marvin and Whizzer about it, but thankfully neither of them seem to have it. Everyone lives and is happy and lives happy lives.
I’ve seen a whole bunch of opinions on the set and what it means but this makes the most sense to me. The things that aren’t gray blocks show maturity. In act one the briefcase, chess board, even the decorations of Mendel and Trina’s house, all show adulthood. The blocks are pretend, imaginary, childish. The non-block stuff is reality. In act two, the hospital bed shows that they have to grow up. This is really happening and it’s time to be mature. The entire musical focuses on the immaturity of the characters until the end when they really grow up. This is just my interpretation of it though!!!
thats mostly how i interpret it also! i think mendel and trinas house is really interesting tho because theyre still using a lot of the gray blocks just incorporating more real life props, unlike the hospital later on. My guess is it has to do with them still playing pretend. the love they have is mostly real, but theyre still playing pretend in a lot of ways. theyve bought books and a dog just for show cause theyre trying to put together a conventional family in such unconventional circumstances. a lot of what they do is for show or pretend.
yea that makes a ton of sense. i kinda feel that the grey blocks are almost meant to be large toy blocks especially considering the emphasis on characters treating life like a game
Thank you so much for this comment! I wrote an essay on falsettos and your view of the set really helped me form my own opinion around the metaphors in the show and the gray blocks!
I'm so grateful that this proshot exists. This is easily one of my all time favorite musicals and I will never get bored of listening to/watching it. Its my go to cast recording. Its my go to slime tutorial. This show is so unbelievably special it unreal. This cast was perfect in every way. From the set and prop design to the lighting and costumes are whatever, this production was nothing short of perfection. I'll never ever get over it. Ever. William Finn is a genius, one of the best musical composers of this generation. I will never not be eternal grateful for his masterpiece
Since the last time I watched this musical, I have turned 18, gotten a partner, and accepted my sexuality. When i heard "its about growing up, getting older, living on a lovers shoulder, learning love is not a crime, its about time" I was in shock. Its crazy how much a lyric can change, when you finally add the context to understand it.
If you’re interested, here’s some info (of my interpretation) on the set: All gray pieces are the main props. Used all throughout the musical. These props show the familiar. The therapy office is familiar, the house is familiar, Whizzers place is familiar (to Marvin). All familiar. We start seeing changes when Trina moves out. Ofc they are just props to make it look nice but it’s also changing because those few objects are unfamiliar/new. Then in the beginning of act 2, all three houses are familiar because they’ve lived in them for 2 years. Same with the baseball bleachers. Then we see the biggest change when Whizzer is sick. The hospital is unfamiliar, different, out of the norm. I believe the gravestone is also a gray piece (not just because it looks like it but also-) cuz Whizzer is familiar. That gravestone is Whizzer. Yeah. Anywaysss there ya go!
yes i hadn't thought of that but i agree! the props as a whole also kinda symbolise the progression of the story to me. it starts off all in an unfeeling cube that doesn't mean anything to the audience, then in "four jews in a room bitching" the characters disassemble it and it gains meaning throughout the show. then, at the very end, after whizzer and marvin say goodbye, the rest of the cast bring the props back on stage in the form of two halves of the cube, which whizzer walks through before going off stage. i think pushing those two halves back together signify that the story has somewhat concluded with whizzer's death. mendall and jason also take out that gray piece you mentioned for whizzer's gravestone. the play ends with a perfect hole in that bland gray cube. i see that as a reference to the permanence of losing someone, and how the story has ended for each of the characters but they'll carry the loss of their friend for life
I always saw it as it was a symbol of their lives/ relationships and as it got more out of their control (the hospital) they couldn’t control it so they used the bed etc, but at the end when (sadness) happened they lost a bit of their lives when whizzed died they all lost a part of their lives and left them with a hole, being the hold which was the the piece used for the grave? (If that makes any sense) also while rewatching I found another thing to support this, in father homo (yes that’s what I’m calling it) Jason runs back and splits the cube in half which is what the family does in that song which is split as that song is like the turning point as Marvin and Trina are splitting as the cube does
Omg ur so right Along with that I think the gray set changing also represents the process of all the characters maturing. First it is all childishness (grey set), then slowly as they mature, the set and props do so too. Show casing the more adult parts of reality (divorce/2 homes, sickness, death, etc.).
@@LRS29170 yessss that is also very very true!!!! I love the visual rep. during father homo how it splits but then at the end it comes back together because of Whizzer :(
i need more people to talk abt the "i don't know why but he looks..... like Marvin" with Marvin's whispered "relax relax" to Jason in between. i was already crying during that whole part but that made me completely break. i would analyse it but i'm so emotional (i just finished this musical 5mins ago LMAO) so i couldn't, but oh my GOD i love that moment. it needs more attention

The switch from act 1 to act 2 with the props, from the grey blocks in act 1 representing Marvin’s mind, and act 2 switching to real props shows that Whizzer getting sick is out of his control and he feels out of his depths
It’s really hard to restart the album after listening to the last 20 minutes. You can’t go from devastating to hilarious like that. My emotions can’t take that 😂

Color Schemes: Marvin - Green Whizzer - Blue Trina - Red/Orange Mendel - Brown Jason - Green + Red I like how you can tell Jason's their kid if you go on color schemes alone :) (probably not the first to notice but still very cool)
Blue also represents death, having Whizzer one of the only characters to wear blue. Marvin also wears a blue flannel, hinting to the fact he dies as well.
how dare they do this and expect me to be okay after. I've been bawling for the last 25 minutes, I called that someone would die but JESUS the white chess piece hurt.
i start crying every time i listen to what would i do because of whizzers shirt. i know it’s stupid but the reason its white is because marvin is slowly forgetting the little things about whizzer. im sobbing while writing this

As a first-time watcher, I'm truly heartbroken. This musical is so sad and depressing, yet I love it so much! I feel so incredibly sorry for Marvin and jason tbh he was such a confused kid. Thank God Mendel stepped into his life! I was sobbing for the last 20 minutes of this show it's so incredibly depressing, but I'm just in awe.... like this story has so much to it maybe I'll watch it again when I get a little older so I might understand it more. I really hate it when characters who didn't deserve to die in musicals die. I finish it simply, heartbroken. I really enjoyed the show other than that part, though! Jason was really my favorite character for a lot of reasons. I really just liked the way he is, and I'm really happy he ended up seeing a psychiatrist, lol.
Pls i literally just had this exact same experience I was looking at slime tutorial playlists and I was like "hepa hepatitis? Andrew rannells? I've been meaning to see this one 🤷♀️" and now I am sobbing and devastated 💔

Kathrine Steele had this in a list of cast recordings to listen to, and now 4 years later I’ve watched this pro shot almost every month and it I still makes me cry
jason says that "its not a funeral whats so upsetting " during his commuting song. but the thing is his bat mitzvah does end up being a funeral, its whizzer's
I really thought this was gonna be one of those comedic musicals with dark themes but overall a happy ending. Didn't think I'll feel real raw emotions let alone be devasted by the end of it. Needless to say I am glad I randomly stubbled upon this masterpiece one day after listen to songs from my other favorite musicals!
I absolutely adore the part of the chess song in the 2016 falsettos proshot when whizzer goes from singing 'checkmate' to 'life's a sham and every move is wrong' that gets me every time. (54:06)

I literally realized this after rewatching it for the second time. Like the last couple minutes of this show makes me ugly cry so badly.
a moment of appreciation for the costumes. at least in the first act, Trina is orange/yellow, Whizzer is blue, and Marvin flips between them. When Whizzer gets sick, the color is stripped away.

one difference i’ve noticed between act one and act two is that act one feels more like a performance while act two feels more like a group of people living. in act one, there’s almost no costume changes, and for the most part, that’s all they are: costumes. while in act two, they change outfits regularly as people do as days pass. another thing is the songs. in act one, almost every song has an “audience” of the other cast members even when they’re not in the song, as if they’re performing for the audience of characters. while in act two, the only characters on stage are the characters in that scene or song. it feels more authentic that way.
especially because act two is accepting that they don’t have to be the perfect family, and in creating their true “tight knit family” they stop performing for everyone in their lives. i love the small details in this musical so much
Things I noticed on my 3rd watch:
-Trina's first costume in act 1 is all warm colors compared to the men's cool colors
-Whizzer makes the slapping sound with a clap in Marvin Hits Trina
-Whizzer saying "do i love him? no" in Marvin Hits Trina is a callback to This Has Better Come To A Stop when Marvin says "love me please"
-Jackass in replacement of asshole the whole musical
-The amount of product in Whizzer's hair in act 2
-The Baseball Game perpetuates the stereotype that lesbians like sports bc they're more masculine. Then breaks down the same stereotype when Whizzer, the fashion all knowing gay guy, teaches Jason to play baseball (I think is this a really cool way to write lgbt ppl)
-Trina lip syncing Jason's prayer during the bar mitzvah
I never realized the second to last one!
Also yess it’s so sweet, Trina’s lip syncing. Steph’s amazing

@@grahhhhha this!!! I absolutely agree, I admire how you've put it into words so effectively
They also do it with the set. For the most part its the blocks and then they start bringing in little things like pillows and when the whizzer stuff starts the main piece is a realistic hospital bed(and other real furniture around it) to show that its not "make believe" anymore
Edit: Also, on the costume point, at the end of act 2, we see jason wearing exactly what his father did at the end of act 1(red zip-up), each at the point in the show where they're at their lowest

I love how skilled all of the actors are. Their reactions are always obvious without pulling focus.
I think it’s because his voice hasn’t dropped so he’s already in falsetto.

listen, i love Marvin as much as the next person and i admire his character growth but something that will always kill me is when at minute 26:33 he asks "life can be wonderful, isn't this wonderful?" and Whizzer is so eager to reassure him but Marvin cuts him off, still insecure and still looking for a fight over silly things. It's one of the small moments, not like The thrill of first love where we can see that both of them enjoy bickering, in which we see that Whizzer is actually more mature and invested in their relationship, not wanting it to end, because he feels like his life with Marvin is wonderful.

@@alexf225obv the person already answered but I think for me I’m so attached to this musical bc I saw it at a pretty import time developmentally (around 16/17) and it shifted my perspective into something much more empathetic and understanding of familial love
I grew up an only child pretty detached from any kind of immediate family, so I spent a lot of time alone or with the one other family member I had. and bc of that, most media about family dynamics and how important family is didn’t resonate with me whatsoever.

Three sad things I noticed after rewatching it
1. Whizzer repeats sometimes over and over again on his death bed because despite what the song says, he is not ready to accept dying and leaving his one stable relationship

WHAT TJE FUCK. I'm
I actually agree with you 👍
I’ve seen a whole bunch of opinions on the set and what it means but this makes the most sense to me.
YOOOO bro wait this makes a lotta senseeeeee I like this!!!
yea that makes a ton of sense. i kinda feel that the grey blocks are almost meant to be large toy blocks especially considering the emphasis on characters treating life like a game
Thank you so much for this comment! I wrote an essay on falsettos and your view of the set really helped me form my own opinion around the metaphors in the show and the gray blocks!

When i heard "its about growing up, getting older, living on a lovers shoulder, learning love is not a crime, its about time" I was in shock. Its crazy how much a lyric can change, when you finally add the context to understand it.
I occasionally reopen this hyperfixation at least 3 times a year and every time it kills me inside
If you’re interested, here’s some info (of my interpretation) on the set:
All gray pieces are the main props.
I LOVE THAT THEORY
yes i hadn't thought of that but i agree! the props as a whole also kinda symbolise the progression of the story to me. it starts off all in an unfeeling cube that doesn't mean anything to the audience, then in "four jews in a room bitching" the characters disassemble it and it gains meaning throughout the show. then, at the very end, after whizzer and marvin say goodbye, the rest of the cast bring the props back on stage in the form of two halves of the cube, which whizzer walks through before going off stage. i think pushing those two halves back together signify that the story has somewhat concluded with whizzer's death.
mendall and jason also take out that gray piece you mentioned for whizzer's gravestone. the play ends with a perfect hole in that bland gray cube. i see that as a reference to the permanence of losing someone, and how the story has ended for each of the characters but they'll carry the loss of their friend for life
I always saw it as it was a symbol of their lives/ relationships and as it got more out of their control (the hospital) they couldn’t control it so they used the bed etc, but at the end when (sadness) happened they lost a bit of their lives when whizzed died they all lost a part of their lives and left them with a hole, being the hold which was the the piece used for the grave? (If that makes any sense)
also while rewatching I found another thing to support this, in father homo (yes that’s what I’m calling it) Jason runs back and splits the cube in half which is what the family does in that song which is split as that song is like the turning point as Marvin and Trina are splitting as the cube does
Omg ur so right
Along with that I think the gray set changing also represents the process of all the characters maturing.

“Biblical times” is my fav pick-up line. Beware though, sometimes it works too well.
The switch from act 1 to act 2 with the props, from the grey blocks in act 1 representing Marvin’s mind, and act 2 switching to real props shows that Whizzer getting sick is out of his control and he feels out of his depths

(probably not the first to notice but still very cool)
Blue also represents death, having Whizzer one of the only characters to wear blue. Marvin also wears a blue flannel, hinting to the fact he dies as well.

I really just liked the way he is, and I'm really happy he ended up seeing a psychiatrist, lol.
the placement of the ads in act two make me physically ill.

jason says that "its not a funeral whats so upsetting " during his commuting song. but the thing is his bat mitzvah does end up being a funeral, its whizzer's
I really thought this was gonna be one of those comedic musicals with dark themes but overall a happy ending. Didn't think I'll feel real raw emotions let alone be devasted by the end of it.
